Green Economy Advisor to International Governments
’08 B.S. Financial Economics, Minor: Gender and Women's Studies, UMBC

Klaudine is a Strategy Advisor who has spent her professional career working with government, multilateral/bilateral organisations, and private sectors across the African continent – first as an Advisor within KPMG’s International Development Advisory Service; later as a Strategy Consultant with Dalberg Global Development Advisors; and currently as the Regional lead for the Government of Canada’s effort to build Clean Technology ecosystems in Africa, and for the United Kingdom’s goal of mainstreaming a ‘Green Economy’ approach into its work in Africa.
Africa has an opportunity to lay solid foundations for future Green Economies. Klaudine’s interest is in understanding which approaches and interventions African countries can adopt. Her expertise has been best applied when working in roles that allow her to engage in mutually beneficial conversations between Africa and the world. Klaudine’s work has contributed to projects for organisations such as the African Development Bank, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, USAID, the MasterCard Foundation, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and The Department for International Development (DFID), just to name a few.
At UMBC, Klaudine earned her undergraduate degree in Financial Economics with a minor in Gender and Women’s Studies, and a Certificate in Accounting (2008). She was a Judicial Board Justice, Resident Assistant, Classic Upward Bound Tutor/Counselor, UMBC Ambassador, Peer Tutor, Conversation Partner, a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society, a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and an active member of the Africa Students Association. Klaudine credits UMBC for nurturing her diverse interest in interdisciplinary thinking and particularly her tutelage under Dr. Jodi Kelber-Kaye, which influenced her worldview, even to this day. In 2010, Klaudine completed her M.Sc. in Development and Globalisation at the London School of Economics, Gender Institute.

Taking a Moment to Pause and Breathe
Processing What Has Happened So Far in 2021
Over the past several weeks, I’ve been reading
See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love by Valerie Kaur. In the book, Kaur explores what brought her to a fight for social justice and the need for radical love, while offering insight into her lived experience as a Sikh American living in the United States. As she shares her story, she likens the darkness of the world to a “tomb” and a “womb.” In this likeness, she argues that if the world is in transition, and this darkness that we continue to experience is in fact the “darkness of the womb,” then the only way to move forward, is to “breathe and push.” We, as a community, are so connected to the pushing - pushing through, pushing up, pushing back… yet, we have not quite figured out how to first breathe.
We know that so many in our community are overflowing with emotions and feelings connected to continuing isolation and hyper vigilance from COVID-19, accompanied by what feels like non-stop death, tragedy, racial injustice, and ongoing distrust of the criminal justice system. In the past, Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b) and our associated centers - Pride, Interfaith, and Mosaic, have often rushed to hold processing and healing spaces, with and for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our broader campus community. As a staff team composed 100% by folks of color, we are feeling intricately impacted, and at the current moment, we have found that we simply do not have the emotional capacity to hold such a space in an authentic, productive way. Yesterday, today and for the remainder of this week, instead of pushing through our own pain, we have decided instead to pause and breathe. As we take the time to process our own rage, exhaustion, and sadness, we still want to be sure that you know that we see you and are in this with you. If you, like us, are navigating a range of emotions, we encourage you to spend this week honoring your needs, and creating space for self-care and reflection, while connecting deeply with loved ones as you engage in community care.
We offer you the following as ways to engage:
If you are feeling directly impacted.
- Breathe deeply. Taking long quiet breaths helps to ground you in moments of crisis.
- Connect with loved ones you trust to process, cry, or just be together. There is no “right” way to process the ongoing trauma we are experiencing.
- Monitor your news and social media intake. To the degree that you are able, avoid (re)watching videos of death, or getting stuck in the traumatic news cycle.
- Remember that we are in this together. As a function of White Supremacy, communities of Color can find themselves pitted against one another, getting caught in horizontal aggression and/or the Oppression Olympics. Instead of getting caught in that cycle, or “keeping score,” consider ways to coalition build and show up for one another across identities.
If you are an ally looking to support impacted communities.
- Connect with your friends, family, peers, and colleagues by helping them to understand why ongoing racial violence is traumatic and overwhelming for communities of color.
- Take the time to explore local organizations who are rooted in ending racial violence in MD, and more broadly across the United States.
- Take the time to learn more about the impacts of racial trauma and the history of racial violence in this country. What we are experiencing today, is not new and has not necessarily ever stopped. Take the time to explore more deeply the historical context of white supremacy, racism and xenophobia in this country and the ways it continues to show up today.
- Instead of getting caught up in hashtag wars, explore the lived realities of the victims of violence - learn their names and about their communities - remind yourself that they were living human beings, not just social media trends.
If you are confused by everyone’s anger.
- Instead of thinking solely about what you might see as a singular current issue at hand, consider the number of BIPOC community members who have been accosted, murdered, etc. as connected to racism and xenophobia in the past two months alone. From spas in Atlanta to Fedex in Indianapolis to Minneapolis and California - there are far too many to name, but the patterns are present and clear.
- Consider that we are not only talking about systemic issues, we are also talking about real people whose lives were taken - real living, breathing human beings whose lives were taken at the hands of someone else. Lean as much as you can into compassion, empathy, perspective taking, and radical love for humanity. As mentioned above, explore the lived realities of the victims of violence - learn their names and about their communities remind yourself that they were living human beings, not just social media trends.
- Explore concepts like Racial Battle Fatigue and Race Based Traumatic Stress to support a more deep exploration of the impacts of racial trauma and the history of racial violence in this country.
- Take the time to explore more deeply the history of white supremacy, racism, and xenophobia in this country. As you explore this history be careful not to give in to defensiveness, shame, or guilt, instead sit with any discomfort you may be experiencing and explore why those feelings may be present for you.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) is celebrating its 25th anniversary! Due to the COVID-related campus closure, URCAD XXV will be held online again this spring. You will be able to view presentations, watch films, see video of dance and music performances, view artwork, and interact with presenters during the asynchronous event.
How Do I View Presentations?
To access student presentations, use the dropdowns above to search by the student’s name, or, you can browse by department. Click the VoiceThread (VT) icon, then click the play button. Many presentations have narration, sound, or video, so make sure to turn your speakers on. The number of slides in the presentation is listed at the top. You can view presentations all week, April 19-25, 2021.
Have a Question? Want to Interact with Presenters?
You can give feedback, ask questions, etc. by leaving a text, voice,or video comment for the presenter (videos are preferred!) You should receive a response from the student within 24 hours, and you will be notified via email when the response is ready (keep notifications enabled). Make sure you are signed in to VT, and then simply Click on the + icon at the bottom of the slide to post a comment. Record your comment and click save. (Note: UMBC account holders can post a comment using their UMBC credentials. For visitors without a UMBC email account, in order to post a comment on a VoiceThread, you will first need to create a free non-UMBC VoiceThread account at https://voicethread.com.)

FOUR UMBC students named Goldwater Scholars for 2021!
Slaughter, Lilly, Kroiz, and Luthria set UMBC record
Four UMBC students have been named 2021-2022 Goldwater Scholars, setting a new university record for the most Retrievers to earn this prestigious undergraduate award in a single year. They are Joshua Slaughter ‘22, computer engineering; Kaitlynn Lilly ‘22, physics and mathematics; Gerson Kroiz ‘22, mathematics; and Karan Luthria ‘22, bioinformatics.
The goal of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program is to provide the United States with “a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers” to move the nation forward. UMBC’s prior Goldwater Scholars, including Rhodes Scholar Naomi Mburu ‘18, chemical engineering, have gone on to top graduate programs and promising research careers.
That four UMBC students won awards, from over 1,250 STEM student applicants across the country is remarkable, notes April Householder’95, director of undergraduate research and prestigious scholarships at UMBC. “Winning the Goldwater means that Slaughter, Lilly, Kroiz, and Luthria join a legacy of scholars who have gone on to become this country’s leading scientists, engineers, and mathematicians,” she says.

Mid-twentieth century American designers had a tremendous impact on national identity and design history— and an overwhelming majority of those who are recognized are white. Korean-American merchandise designer, Alma Shon shaped standards of luxury retail in America and Black graphic designer, Thomas Miller led and contributed to the designs of logos that you still see today— and both artists go uncredited in many archives, unmentioned in design history courses and not even considered in our colonized design canon.
Curator Margaret Re’s exhibition, A Designed Life, however, has uncovered the work of Shon, Miller, and many other designers in its recreation of three traveling exhibitions that were commissioned by the U.S. Department of State during the Cold War from 1951 to 1954. In addition to composing biographies for Shon and Miller that will be included as supporting research in the virtual exhibition of A Designed Life at the Design Museum of Chicago in 2021, I have identified their work and influence in archives, in hopes of decolonizing the design canon through the inclusion of Shon and Miller’s narratives and work.

IDEAL Interns, known as IDEALists, work for Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (I3B) and are supervised by the Coordinators with Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
The main role of the IDEAL Internship is to support our professional staff in cultivating a community built on a foundation of Inclusive Excellence and social justice through peer-led workshops and facilitated dialogue. Interns have a variable/flexible schedule contingent upon facilitation needs.
The priority deadline for this application is Friday, April 30, 2021 at 11:59pm. Applications will officially close May 14th at 5pm. Candidates advancing in the process will be interviewed.

English Language Learners' (ELLs) experiences can often be frustrating because their education may not address learning modalities that suit them, specifically when it comes to teaching English grammar. MotionWriters, a learning program created by Assistant Professor Ann Sofie Clemmensen and Dance/English Literature major, Angelika Albertorio seeks to address this problem by implementing a multimodal teaching approach that engages practicing English grammar through the involvement of the moving body. Inspired by the choreographic process, MotionWriters guides participants through a creative process structured around the creation and continuous revision of a fictional narrative. Students will go through a series of modules and creative devices/tasks. The differences of parts of speech, vocabulary, and sentence structure are explored through the whole body, including visual, verbal, and kinesthetic modes of learning. The MotionWriters pilot program is targeted at ELLs who are between the ages of nine to eleven. The community aspect of this program, coupled with the creative approach to English language and grammar, hopes to make for an interactive experience for students and inspire confidence for their future educational endeavors.
