Highlighting Summer HAPP Intern Bryce Mack

Highlighting Summer HAPP Intern:

“My name is Bryce Mack. I am a Senior at UMBC. I will be graduating this upcoming Fall semester. I transferred to UMBC from Howard Community College with an AA In Public Health and chose to attend UMBC because they offered the administrative side of Public Health. I chose to study Public Health/Health Administration because public health is a field where you get to help people better their lives. It is a field where you can actively see that you are making a difference in the world. At my internship at Retriever Essentials I chose to study the Save-A-Swipe program where students can donate meal swipes to students suffering from food insecurity. The rate of food insecurity at UMBC is higher than any other college in the University System of Maryland. Now there are many different factors as to why this is, but it was shocking for me to see while conducting my research. No student should have to go hungry and the Save-A-Swipe program works to mediate this problem. I researched similar programs at other colleges and universities and worked to find the common threads and the divergent elements between the programs. With this new research available and the outstanding staff at Retriever Essentials the Save-A-Swipe program will become more extensive and reach more students suffering from food insecurity.”

Repost: New Event Requests

<Tagline>Please note that this applies to our three reservable spaces</Tagline>

This post is a repost of a message sent out to all UMBC community members that have 25Live reservation access by Joel DeWyer, Associate Director for Campus Life Operations. The following procedures will apply to our three i3b reservable spaces (i.e. The Mosaic - The Commons 2B23; The Pride Center - The University Center 201 D; The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being - The Center for Well-Being 103). Please contact us at i3b if you have any particular questions about the i3b reservable spaces.

"Dear campus partners:

We currently have a 14-day buffer period built into 25Live that universally restricts users from requesting events less than 14 days out. We have temporarily put this in place, in part, because of the limited inventory of spaces, the risk assessment review that's required, and the advising that is often still needed to coordinate campus services.

We have been receiving an influx of event requests from users for dates beyond the 14-day window, but with event descriptions in 25Live that request an actual date less than 14 days, sometimes as few as three. This effort to bypass the buffer has been increasingly difficult and frustrating as we continue to strive to serve all of you fairly and consistently.

We are certain that nobody has been attempting to do this with ill-intent -- we understand that we're all trying to do the best jobs we can each day during this unusual time. We appreciate your understanding that, going forward, we will not be approving risk assessments or location requests for events and activities that are attempting to circumvent the buffer.

In partnership,

October is Disability Awareness Month

<Tagline>Celebrate the diversity of disability</Tagline>

National Disability Awareness Month is held
in October to raise awareness about issues that arise within the lived
experience of people with disabilities, and celebrates the many and
varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.

NDAM's
roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first
week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped
Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the
employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of
disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed
the name to "National Disability Awareness Month" to address inclusion
    more broadly.

Americans
with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, which
brings more celebration to this month, underneath the umbrella of the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) celebrating its 31st anniversary. This month includes:

This is a super flexible event, and people are welcome to engage in whatever way feels best!

“In the early 1970s, teenagers with disabilities faced a future shaped by isolation, discrimination and institutionalization. Camp Jened, a ramshackle camp “for the handicapped” (a term no longer used) in the Catskills, exploded those confines. Jened was their freewheeling Utopia, a place with summertime sports, smoking and make-out sessions awaiting everyone, and campers experienced liberation and full inclusion as human beings. Their bonds endured as many migrated West to Berkeley, California — a hotbed of activism where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption, civil disobedience, and political participation could change the future for millions.

Crip Camp is the story of one group of people and captures one moment in time. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of other equally important stories from the Disability Rights Movement that have not yet received adequate attention. We are committed to using the film’s platform to amplify additional narratives in the disability rights and disability justice communities – with a particular emphasis on stories surrounding people of color and other intersectionally marginalized communities. We stand by the creed of nothing about us, without us. For too long, too many were excluded, and it is time to broaden the number of voices and share the mic.”
