Rare Disease Day Feb 28 - Honoring 300M People Worldwide

<Tagline>Show Your Stripes> 2/28 UMBC Sustainability Contest</Tagline>

What is Rare Disease Day?

Rare Disease Day is the globally-coordinated movement on rare diseases, working towards equity in social opportunity, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease.

Since its creation in 2008, Rare Disease Day has played a critical part in building an international community that is multi-disease, global, and diverse– but united in purpose. Rare Disease Day is observed every year on 28 February (or 29 in leap years)—the rarest day of the year. Rare Disease Day provides an energy and focal point that enables rare diseases advocacy work to progress on the local, national and international levels.

Though Rare Disease Day is led by the people with these health conditions, everyone, including families and friends, healthcare professionals, researchers, policy makers, and the general public, can participate in raising awareness and taking action to raise awareness.

By Sharing your colors via social media here (link), by sharing experiences online and with friends, by calling on elected officials and shining the light on the experience of people living with a rare disease, we can change to world for the better. These improvements are not only for the 300 million people worldwide, but shape health and wellness far into the future.

UMBC's Sustainability Matters group is a partner with this cause because the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action to recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. UMBC is a community, and partnership is how we continue to end stigma and accept the diversity of health experiences and abilities among our networked communities.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

GSA Writing 1on1 Assistance

<Tagline>GSA provides our top-knotch Writing Advisor 2 grad students</Tagline>

With the semester really kicking into gear, it’s time to start writing again! If you feel stuck on a writing assignment, are having trouble getting started, or just want to polish up what you already have, then come see me, Ivan “Blue” Perez, GSA’s Writing Advisor! I am available on select hours Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to graduate students of any discipline for virtual tutoring sessions.

A little bit about myself: I earned my Bachelors’s Degree in English Literature, along with a minor in Writing and another in Ancient Studies, here at UMBC in the Spring of 2021. I worked at the UMBC Writing Center for about three years and have been continuing that work with you all. In my free time, I like to play video games, watch TV, read (I particularly enjoy Fantasy), and write. My favorite book is I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, my current favorite TV show is Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and my favorite color is, unsurprisingly, blue.

You can bring any writing at any stage of the writing process to an appointment. That means you can come to me with a rough draft, a polished draft, an outline, or even just an idea. Are you working on your thesis? Book an appointment early and we can start planning it out, with follow-up meetings throughout the semester. Have another assignment or piece of writing that you want to work on? That’s fine too! Bring it in and I will help you get your writing to where you want it to be.

Appointments are free and function on a first-come, first-serve basis. Appointments are an hour long and can currently be done online either synchronously or asynchronously. Each appointment has a 10-page, double-spaced limit. Visit https://gsa.umbc.edu/writing-advisor/ for more information and to book an appointment. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you!
