Opportunities in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering


D'Juan Moreland '23, biological sciences and music; Rachel Myers '23, chemical engineering; Christopher Slaughter '23, computer engineering; and Tobi Majekodunmi '23, mechanical engineering are our representatives for 2022. Will you join them in 2023?

The Goldwater Scholarship supports outstanding students interested in research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. The scholarship covers undergraduate eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to $7,500 per academic year for up to 2 years.

ELIGIBILITY
To be considered for nomination, a student must:
  • Have a minimum of one semester and no more than two years of undergraduate study remaining beginning September 2023.
  • Be pursuing a bachelor's degree on a full-time basis.
  • Have an average GPA > 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Have a demonstrated interest in a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
  • Be nominated by his or her college or university via the official online nomination application.

First Tuesday in September through 5:00 p.m., CT on the last Friday in January.

We will also share opportunities and updates on our semester initiatives, how you can engage with us, and highlight campus partners supporting underrepresented and/or marginalized UMBC students. Lastly, attendees will also learn how i3b can provide consultation, training, and workshops for your classroom, department, or staff team.

Women's Center Fall 2022 Hours of Operation:

Beginning on the first day of classes, the Women's Center will start welcoming community members into our physical space!

In order to protect our collective health, we encourage social distancing while in the lounge space, and may enforce capacity limits for larger events. In addition, we ask that community members continue to wear masks in our spaces. 

Our Fall Hours are:
Mondays through Thursdays: 11am - 5pm
Fridays: 11am - 4pm

While we are physically open, the Women's Center will also continue to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday to those who are learning and working remotely. We encourage campus community members to contact us through email at womenscenter@umbc.edu or via phone at 410-455-2714.

Instructional Technology will host a 90-minute support sprint on Friday, August 26, 2022 (noon-1:30) for faculty to virtually drop-in and receive a customized consult on key topics to finalize course prep including:
  • Checking your course materials for accessibility: Use Ally to check your accessibility meters and review alternative formats. 
  • Recycling & reusing your course content. Quickly stage your upcoming course from semester to semester with the Ultra Course Copy tool.
  • Engaging with students: Schedule, deliver & record virtual classes with Collaborate.
  • Delivering & configuring virtual tests: Create online tests and assignments using Bb tools.
  • Tuning up your Blackboard gradebook: Create columns, drop scores, check calculations, verify weighted totals, etc.
  • Preparing for Ultra: Plan your course roadmap to optimize your transition to the new course interface.

Come by from 2-3 PM, bring your own bag, and grab some fruits and veggies! Stock comes from recovered food that would otherwise go to waste, and will be available until we run out.

Call Us What We Carry (aka The Hill We Climb and Other Poems) by Amanda Gorman has been selected for the community read book for the school year 2022-23.

Amanda Gorman is an American poet and activist. Her work focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race, and marginalization, as well as the African diaspora. Gorman was the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. She published the poetry book The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough in 2015. 

In 2021, she delivered her poem "The Hill We Climb" at the inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden.
