    <h4><em>The Women's Center's Returning Adult Learners Scholarships Application for 2023-24 is available now via <a href="https://umbc.academicworks.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Scholarship Retriever</a> to undergraduate students who meet the eligibility requirements. </em></h4>

    <em>T</em><em>he deadline for submission via </em><em><a href="https://umbc.academicworks.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Scholarship Retriever</a> </em><em>is Friday, April 8, 2023. </em>
    </h4>
    <h5><em><br></em></h5>
    <h5>This common application which is called <em>Women's Center: Returning Adult Learners 2023-2024</em> in <a href="https://umbc.academicworks.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Scholarship Retriever </a>enables eligible students to apply for more than one of the Returning Adult Learner Scholarships with just one submission. Please note that <em>this opportunity to apply will only appear in Scholarship Retriever to students who meet the scholarship qualifications</em>. The six available scholarships via the Returning Adult Learner Scholarship Application are:</h5>

    <li><span>Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship &amp; The UMBC Scholarship for Returning Adult Learners</span></li>
    <li><span>Jodi Mister/Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship</span></li>
    <li><span>Charlotte W. Newcombe STEM Scholarship</span></li>
    <li><span>AEGON Scholarship</span></li>
    <li><span>The Richard &amp; Roselyn Bryson Neville Memorial Fund for Returning Women Scholarship</span></li>
    <li><span>The Rosalie Tydings Business and Professional Women’s Scholarship</span></li>
    </ul>
    <div><span><br></span></div>
    </h5>
    <h5><em>Undergraduate students of any gender over the age of 25 and with at least 60 credits and 2.5 GPA may be eligible. Students must be completing their <u>first </u>undergraduate degree. </em></h5>
    <div><em>If a student does not meet these requirements, the scholarship opportunity will not appear on Scholarship Retriever. Students who have not completed the FAFSA will not see the opportunity in Scholarship Retriever. <strong>Students who wish to still be considered despite not meeting these requirements should contact the Women's Center directly. </strong>This encouragement to reach out directly to the Women's Center extends to students who have extenuating circumstances (i.e. students who are DACA/undocumented) that may prevent them from completing the FAFSA.</em></div>

    <em>Students who are selected to be scholars are required to participate in the </em><em>Returning Adult Learners Scholars + Affiliates program</em><em>.      UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar series continues with a 
    presentation by Keisha McIntosh Allen, Corey Carter, and Jackie Peng.</span></span></span> 
     They will discuss a study that systematically investigates the 
    framework of learning teaching as an interpretive process (LTIP) 
    advanced by <span><span>Etta Ruth Hollins</span></span>
    
     and its impact on the learning outcomes of teacher candidates who are 
    Sherman Program scholars at UMBC. The study uses naturalistic, 
    constructivist qualitative inquiry methods, which assume that meaning 
    can be made based on observations in natural rather than controlled 
    contexts.  </div>

<Title>REPOST: Black Disability History Talk: 504 and Beyond</Title>

    <strong>Sami Schalk</strong>, Associate Professor, Gender and Women’s Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison will be speaking on campus on Thursday February 23rd at 4:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building Room 132.  To RSVP for this in-person event, click on the website button below.</div>

    <div>Drawing from the book, <em>Black Disability Politics</em>, this talk will detail the Black Panther Party’s involvement in the 1977 504 Sit-in, in which protesters around the country picketed and occupied government offices to urge passage of delayed regulations related to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Schalk will discuss the sit-in as an historical example of how Black cultural workers have engaged with disability as a political issue in ways that have sometimes been obscured in Black studies and disability studies alike.<br>

    <div>This lecture is organized by the Dresher Center for the Humanities.<br>

    <strong>Biography:</strong> <strong>Dr. Sami Schalk</strong> (she/her) is an associate professor of Gender &amp; Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of <em>Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction</em> (Duke 2018) and <em>Black Disability Politics</em> (Duke 2022). Dr. Schalk’s academic work focuses on race, disability, and gender in contemporary American literature and culture. She also writes for mainstream outlets, including a monthly column called “Pleasure Practices” in <em>TONE Madison</em>. Dr. Schalk identifies as a fat, Black, queer, disabled femme and a pleasure activist.<br>

REACH is a group of students, staff, and faculty from all departments and levels of experience that meets to help Retriever Essentials achieve our goals! <div><br></div>

    <strong>Our first meeting is on Webex on Friday, February 24th from 9:00 to 10:00 am</strong>. The group meets once or twice per month.<br><div><br></div>

    <div><strong>This is a friendly reminder that the Student Fee Advisory Committee is holding a Fee Forum for all students tomorrow at noon. It will take place in the first floor lecture hall in the Admin building. </strong></div>

    <div>While we are not changing our fee, it is important that all students know about where their money is going. I will share a short presentation that talks about us and what we do to support graduate students. </div>
