Autism: From Awareness to Acceptance in April Inclusion and Acceptance Happen Every Day

Autism is a Spectrum- from Awareness to Acceptance


April is known as Autism Awareness Month, including April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day (link), with more events happening across the United States.   In listening to many within the Autism community - there is a call for media to move from using awareness to acceptance to foster change and inclusivity for those affected by autism - read more about it from the Autism Society here.  Information on What is Autism is linked here, and a deeper dive sharing the voices of many people on the Autism Spectrum is posted here.

Being on the Autism Spectrum is a nuanced diagnosis with a rainbow of traits, and is explained well here.  Rebecca Burgess also explains the spectrum within her comic on The Mighty here. Day-to-day living and learning independence was recently examined in depth on PBS's In a Different Key which covers the history of autism and highlights the experience of a range of people with autism, their families and their community.

People of all identities around the world live, go to school and go to work with the neurodiversity that Autism brings to a world, often with struggle and difficulty. UMBC's students, faculty, staff, and visitors have this neurodiversity as well.  While many learn and work well with best practices and accessible design,  students (both undergraduate and graduate), as well as faculty and staff who experience disability with a diagnosed health condition (which includes autism) may seek accommodations through Student Disability Services (link) for academic programs, as well as work-related accommodations via Accessibility & Disability Services. 


Sexual Assault Awareness Month


April is also a time when UMBC highlights awareness about sexual assault - which informs community safety and health at UMBC. ADS and SDS are acutely aware of how this harmful and criminal behavior disproportionately affects people with disabilities.  Hannah Gadsby speaks about her experience within the wide-ranging special, Nanette. Information on how to access help and support is available at any time on the OEI website.

Art and poetry have had a role in activism and social justice movements for generations. In connection to this years UMBC Community Read book, Call Us What We Carry by Amanda Gorman, this year's PAWTalk focuses on stories of activism and social change, and the ways spoken word has been an impactful force. 

Join i3b in the UMBC Library Gallery for a poetry reading, featuring Kwyn "Kwynology" Towsend, followed by a panel discussion with a group of students, staff, and faculty. 

PAWTalks Inspirational Talks series invites speakers each semester from all over the country to discuss personal experiences relating to their identity, research and/or global issues that impact diversity, equity and inclusion. PAWTalks provides an interactive, cultural sharing experience by highlighting the richness of the various cultures through speakers from around the country representing diverse backgrounds.

Immigrant Attitudes Toward Women’s Participation in Politics in Maryland

Acculturation theory states that immigrants usually maintain some beliefs and values from their homeland during their adaptation process in a new country. Based on this theory, it is plausible that immigrants will hold onto the attitudes toward women typical of their home countries when developing their attitudes toward women’s participation in politics in the United States. Previous literature finds that the country of origin influences immigrant attitudes toward women. Few studies have examined immigrant attitudes specifically toward women in politics across multiple immigrant groups. This study investigates how homeland views on gender roles might influence the perceptions immigrants have toward women in politics in the United States. The study used a survey applied to 163 immigrant adults from multiple countries in Maryland. After conducting difference of means tests, single variable linear regressions, and multivariate regressions, this study finds that immigrants from countries with more egalitarian attitudes toward women are more likely to hold positive attitudes toward women’s participation in politics in the United States compared to immigrants from countries with more patriarchal attitudes toward women. Furthermore, the study also found that gender, political orientation, and age were strong predictors of immigrant attitudes toward women in politics in the United States.

Into the Great Outdoors: An Ethnographic Exploration of Hiking, Conservation, and Nature in Maryland

Each weekend, people across the country head out “into the great outdoors” to “get away from civilization.” As they do so, they engage with ideas about nature that have a long and varied history in the United States, many of which conflict with each other. Further, these ideas underlie ways that individuals, groups, and governments interact with the natural world, shaping the environment, sometimes in ways that cause irreparable harm. This study explores how ideas about nature and human activity are vocalized and employed by members of one large and active Maryland-based hiking club as they head out on trails winding across parks, preserves, and urban areas. Through ethnographic methods, including participant observation and several forms of interviewing, this project demonstrates how participation with this hiking club shapes members’ views of nature and their activities within it. This qualitative data was principally collected during organized hikes of varying size and difficulty level. This investigation of hikers’ ideas about nature and their place within it has implications for building stronger community engagement with the environment as well as policies and practices that conserve it.

Title: Watch Me Work: Baltimore Barbershops, Hair Salons, Stories & More

Mentor: Dr. Nicole King, American Studies

Abstract:
Picture this: a corner shop. You walk in and hear the buzz of clippers from a barber or a salon, the smell of burning flat iron, then some faint neo-soul music and real talk amongst the stylists and clients. What is this place? Why does it matter? Why is it here? What better way to know than to hear from the ones who run it? The right to the city can be defined in numerous ways, but this research dives into its culturally independent side. Black-owned businesses aren't just for profit; they aim to create safe spaces and independence. The Watch Me Work project methodology is an interactive interview set up to hear the stories of Black Baltimore Salons and Barbershops from the owners. An article by the Huffington Post notes that "black salons are a social hub" and are "safe spaces" for people to be unapologetically black. This project focuses on how and why this space was created from the mouths of the creators. Video interviews with the owners are the most authentic way to capture the stories of these environments. In conclusion, the objective of this project is to explore the pursuit of Black Business in Baltimore.

National Deaf History Month 2023


National Deaf History Month is now celebrated from April 1-April 30th  to celebrate all aspects of Deaf Culture, and still honors its academic beginning in 1996 when two Deaf employees at Martin Luther King Library in DC began teaching their colleagues American Sign Language.  (UMBC has American Sign Language courses throughout the year, and Sign of  Life is the student organization for people who are learning/know ASL) April 8, 1864 was when Gallaudet University-the world's first institution of higher education for the Deaf and hard of hearing,  April 15th, 1817 is when the American School for the Deaf - the first public school of its kind - opened. 

Recent history includes the 2021 movie CODA winning Best Picture and Deaf actor Troy Kotsur, winning Best Actor at the Oscars, among other Oscars that night and SAG awards for best cast. Troy Kotsur was a presenter at the 2023 Oscars.  Marlee Matlin, who made history when she won her first Oscar in 1987, played a pivotal role in advocating for CODA's predominantly Deaf cast.  Perhaps some of UMBC's students and alumni will be influenced by this history-making, if-you-can-see-it-you-can-be-it moment? 

While UMBC has a solid cadre and network of ASL interpreters, there is an ASL interpreter shortage (more information linked here), which underscores the need for event planners to know what accommodations their attendees may need.  This can be as simple as including:  "If you have access needs, please email (event contact email).  UMBC event planners would then immediately fill out the form in the link below based on planned ASL interpreter use.

The UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar series continues with a presentation by Francis M. Hult.  He will discuss his work, which is grounded in an ecology of languages orientation and the ethnographic, discourse analytic methodology of nexus analysis.  Drawing upon his recent studies of intergovernmental and higher education language policies, he examines how geopolitical forces intersect with policy and practice on local and (inter)national scales.
