UMBC has
been selected to participate in the pilot cohort of the All of Us Data
Training and Engagement for Academic Libraries Program presented by the
National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the All of Us Research
Program. Representing UMBC in this cohort will be Brianna Hughes, Jasmine Shumaker and Semhar Yohannes.
Acknowledging the contributions of
libraries to scientific research teams, this Program is designed to build and
strengthen the research capacity of libraries at institutions with a significant
percentage of students from groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical
workforce, such as ours. The
Program will encourage our academic librarians to learn about the All
of Us Researcher Workbench dataset and enhance
their skills in biomedical and public health data and our Library's research
capacity through engagement in an exciting community-learning cohort.
Data-driven research continues to be a
priority for academic institutions as it contributes to providing information
about diseases, risk factors, and public health, and can increase academic
publication rates and grant awards. Participation in this program will
help raise our research profile, expand publications, and assist our students
and researchers by providing access to one of the largest, richest, most
diverse biomedical datasets of
its kind.
The All of Us Research
Program dataset offers access to a diverse, longitudinal dataset that can be
used by student and faculty who may not have access to other datasets. The NIH
has worked with research communities and community members to ensure a robust
research protocol that respects participants and the needs of the research
community. This dataset includes biological and social determinants of
health data on a large, inclusive scale, that follows participants as they
move, age, and grow. It is beneficial for students and researchers in social
sciences as well as biomedical and public health programs.
To address Program objectives and
facilitate an institutional infrastructure and capacity-building, participation
in the Program makes us eligible for an infrastructure award of up to $43,000.

update you on our progress throughout the program.

Learning to recognize and combat forms of injustice and move toward a more equitable world is a lifelong process. A great practice towards this aim is to read different perspectives and be reflective as you do. Check out the following books that our Women's Center Advisory Board selected as their top suggestions:
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. That feminists refuse to prioritize these issues has only exacerbated the age-old problem of both internecine discord and women who rebuff at carrying the title. Moreover, prominent white feminists broadly suffer from their own myopia with regard to how things like race, class, sexual orientation, and ability intersect with gender. How can we stand in solidarity as a movement, Kendall asks, when there is the distinct likelihood that some women are oppressing others?
In We Will Not Cancel Us, movement mediator adrienne maree brown reframes the discussion for us, in a way that points to possible paths beyond our impasse. Most critiques of cancel culture come from outside the milieus that produce it, sometimes even from its targets. Brown explores the question from a Black, queer, and feminist viewpoint that gently asks, how well does this practice serve us? Does it prefigure the sort of world we want to live in? And, if it doesn’t, how do we seek accountability and redress for harm in ways that reflect our values?
You Are Your Best Thing edited by Tarana Tarana Burke and Dr. Brené Brown bring together a dynamic group of Black writers, organizers, artists, academics, and cultural figures to discuss the topics the two have dedicated their lives to understanding and teaching: vulnerability and shame resilience. Contributions by Kiese Laymon, Imani Perry, Laverne Cox, Jason Reynolds, Austin Channing Brown, and more.
Over the past ten years, we have witnessed the rise of queer and trans communities that have defied and challenged those who have historically opposed them. Through bold, symbolic imagery and surrealist, overlapping landscapes, queer illustrator and curator Syan Rose shines a light on the faces and voices of these diverse, amorphous, messy, real, and imagined queer and trans communities. In their own words, queer and trans organizers, artists, healers, comrades, and leaders speak honestly and authentically about their own experiences with power, love, pain, and magic to create a textured and nuanced portrait of queer and trans realities in America.
