Retriever Essentials team is runner-up in nat'l competition Addressing world hunger

Retriever Essentials, represented by student volunteers Nhi Nguyen '25, biochemistry and bioinformatics, and Ben Bhattarai '23, biology and psychology, is a second place finalist in the 2023 Wilbur Ellis Innovation Award. Announced at the end of September, the honorable mention award--given to only four schools--recognizes the student teams with the most innovative strategies for providing food for a growing world population.

Nguyen and Bhattarai's proposal aimed to address the water scarcity in agriculture which affects the ability to feed a growing world population sustainably. Their project proposed the use of halophytic (salt-tolerant) algae to desalinate saltwater in order to increase freshwater availability to enhance agricultural yields and to create highly nutritious food products. Nguyen and Bhattarai believe their project also may help resolve some of the impacts of global warming on food production and transportation, including the growth of algae; limited fossil fuels; and ocean acidification due to high carbon dioxide. Both hope to continue their research into ways to eliminate food insecurity.

Americans with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, which brings more celebration to this month, underneath the umbrella of the  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  celebrating its 32st anniversary, and Section 504 celebrating its 50th Anniversary. In addition to honoring
we respectfully nod to disability-related health conditions that are highlighted at other times.  We see you.  You matter.  

Accessibility and Disability Services, remains committed to building on past progress and creating inclusive change as we work in partnership with the entire UMBC community, including Facilities Management, Human Resources and Instructional Technology. Student Disability Services provides support for students with disabilities, as education is a path toward progress.   While huge strides have been made with accessibility and inclusion (which can happen via accommodation), people with disabilities still face discrimination and lack of understanding. and has many events planned - the fight for full inclusion remains (Judy Heumann Ted Talk link).

Retriever Integrated Health includes The Counseling Center as counseling (of course) as well as workshops and group meetings - they are recruiting for their Neurodiversity group, and have several short series to address.

Retriever Integrated Health also has a range of health services that support campus members of all abilities in their very-accessible Center for Wellbeing  across from Erickson Field (D7 on the map).

The Center for Democracy and Civic Lifes Change Makers Dinner brings UMBC students (both undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff, and alumni together for guided small-group conversations with leaders who are making a difference in their communities. On Tuesday 10/24, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Apartment Community Center, meet local leaders and learn about their work, aspirations, and concerns in connection with environmental justice in and around the Baltimore region. You will have the opportunity to hear from these Change Makers and explore ways to get involved in addressing the topic at hand. A catered dinner will be provided.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is a prestigious award for college sophomores and juniors studying science, math, and engineering.
Successful applicants can receive a maximum of $7,500 per academic year for 1 or 2 years, depending on the year in which they receive the award. The funds can be applied to tuition, fees, books, room, and board.

Learn about Ally, a tool available in Blackboard Original and Ultra courses, that improves the accessibility of your course content. Schedule a personal consultation to see Ally’s remediation capabilities and file conversion tools that generate alternative formats for you and your students. 

This scheduled 20-minute Webex consultation will offer instructors ideas for developing a strategy to improve your course usability and accessibility and how to get started with Blackboard Ally.

Ally scans content in Blackboard and provides feedback and tools to identify and fix accessibility issues. Leverage Ally's powerful alternative format options yourself, and let students know they can download content in multiple formats that give them choices in how they watch, read, or listen.

Fall 2023's Meet & Confer Town Hall on October 16th. We are delighted to announce that Graduate School Deans are joining us for our first GA Town Hall for this academic year. We will be taking written questions through Slido at the moment. Question will be prioritized from to the number of likes. 

Town Hall Agenda:
1. Quick introduction (5 minutes)
 -- Meet & Confer overview
 -- Introduction of Deans
 -- Guidelines for Town Hall Q&A
 2. Deans will take questions from the list projected on the screen. 
 3. Raffle for survey participants (last 5 minutes)
