<Title>Happy Lunar New Year!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>From all of us at The Mosaic, we wish you a happy and prosperous new year! </span></p><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><p><span>Also known as the Spring Festival (春节) / Chinese New Year (新年) in China, Tết in Vietnam, and Seollal (설날) in Korea, Lunar New Year celebrates the start of the new year on the lunisolar calendar, observed through a range of traditions extending over several days. Beginning on Saturday, February 10th, 2024 and celebrated for multiple days, <strong><u>this meaningful and significant holiday is considered one of the most important holidays across cultures</u></strong>. Businesses, schools, and government offices are closed during this time across the world in observance of Lunar New Year. A time for familial gathering and engaging in longstanding traditions. For individuals celebrating the Lunar New Year spiritually,  these festive days hold significance, honoring ancestors and those departed through various ritual celebrations. </span></p><br><p><span>During this festive period, family, friends, and loved ones come together to prepare traditional and customary dishes, each carrying symbolic meaning. Foods like Tangyuan (sweet rice balls, China), Tteokguk (rice cake soup, Korea), and Banh Chung (square glutinous rice cake, Vietnam) embody cherished values and beliefs such as family unity, longevity, and reverence for the Earth.</span></p><br><p><span>In addition to observing the lunisolar calendar, each year is designated by a specific Zodiac animal. The significance and symbolism linked to each Zodiac animal differ across various cultures due to their distinct beliefs and customs. In 2024, it is recognized as the Year of the Dragon, a highly auspicious zodiac sign representing qualities like cleverness, charm, and even wealth. Different cultures may associate various types of dragons with the zodiac belief.     <div class="html-content"><p><span>The University System of Maryland Board of Regents and the University System of Maryland Student Council are introducing the Board of Regents Student Excellence Scholarships to recognize exceptionally talented students who are making contributions in various aspects of student life. Each awardee will receive a commemorative stole and a $2,000 scholarship to commemorate their outstanding achievements.</span></p><p><span>Scholarships will be granted to up to two undergraduate students (one first-year or sophomore and one junior or senior) and up to one graduate student from among the diverse USM student community exhibiting achievements in the following categories: (1) Leadership and Advocacy; (2) Outreach and Engagement; (3) Innovation and Creativity; and (4) Academics, Scholarship, and Research.</span></p><p><span>Students are responsible for self-nomination, and the deadline to submit an application is February 9. <Title>Celebrating Black History Month Intersectionally</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Accessibility and Disability Services and Student Disability Services joins <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/themosaic/posts/138582" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The Mosaic Center </a>and all UMBC partners with honoring Black History Month.</p><p>Rediscover how some members of the Black Civil Rights Movement also played essential roles as activists in the US Disability Rights Movement, and paved the way for disability rights activists to influence social change and legislation. Many people with disabilities were part of both movements and continue to be today.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw1ATXKfr9g" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Sami Schalk presented at UMBC less than a year ago on<strong><em> 504 and Beyond: Disability Politics and the Black Panther Party</em></strong></a>via the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/dreshercenter" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dresher Center</a> - the and co-sponsorship with ADS and I3B.</p><p><br></p><p><a href="https://wid.org/why-black-disabled-history-matters/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Why Black Disabled History Matters by Dikko Yusef of WID </a>provides a great summary</p><p>Some of the intersectionality within the documentary  <a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81001496" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp</a> shows how intersectional being black and disabled can be - beyond the Black Panthers. Further back in history, learn new things about the famous Black figures who also had disabilities. The research of <a href="https://healthpolicyresearch-scholars.org/scholars/stephanie-keeney-parks/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Stephanie Keeney Parks</a> takes a racially nuanced approach to Autism via <a href="https://www.pbs.org/search/?q=in+a+different+key" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">In A Different Key</a>.
