<Title>Special Social Science Undergrad Research Awards</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div><div><div><div><span>Social Science URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate researchers whose work, in collaboration with a faculty mentor, uses social science to explore the world or address socially relevant concerns. Recipients agree to present their work as part of an URCAD panel and other groups of social science students at UMBC. To be eligible for a Social Science URA, you must be enrolled as a UMBC student for the duration of the work proposed and must adhere to all the requirements of the URA program. The URA selection committee has some advice to encourage you to apply for a URA and start to plan your research, even if there are some unknowns for the summer and fall semesters.</p><ol><li>We have moved the application deadline back to May 15, 2020, in order to give students some extra time to prepare their research proposals.</li><li>Some research that was scheduled to start this summer may be delayed until the fall or spring semester- that’s ok! The URA is good for the entire year, June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2121. You can complete the research at any point during that time frame.</li><li>Our expectations for a final product are fluid and relaxed. If the research plan doesn’t work out exactly as you proposed, that’s ok- it’s the nature of doing research.</li><li>Be creative in the ways you think about your project. You may have to focus instead on doing a thorough literature review, using a pre-formed data set to analyze, or looking at case studies, rather than collecting in-person data, or conducting research in a lab.</li><li>Methods such as lab benchwork, participant observations, focus groups, travel-related, in-person interviews, or other real-time collection methods may need some re-thinking. How can you collect data via online interviews, the internet, or other technological interventions?</li><li>Creative arts projects may incorporate some kind of online delivery method.     <div class="html-content"><div>The Department of Economics Policy regarding whether courses completed with a grade of "P" in Spring, 2020 will meet requirements for <span>the ECON BA, the  FIEC B.S., Econ minors, and Accounting Certificates is as follows. </span></div><div><br></div><div>Courses  taken in Spring, 2020 which are NOT required prerequisites for</div><div><div><span><div>other courses can count towards the ECON, FIEC, and any Econ minor as well as  both accounting certificates if completed with</div><div>a grade of P.     </div><div><br></div><div>For courses taken in Spring, 2020 that are required prereqs for other courses, they will have to be completed with <span>a grade of at least "C" to count towards our ECON,FIEC, and any Econ minor and accounting certificate requirements. </span></div><div><br></div><div>Here is a list of the courses based on this criteria that  must be completed with a grade</div><div>of "C" or higher to count towards Econ and Accounting program requirements:</div><div><br></div></span></div></div><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Econ 101</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Econ 102</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Econ 121</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Econ 122</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Econ 311</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Econ 312</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Math 151</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Math 155</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Stat 350, 351, 355, 453, or </strong><strong>CMPE 320, or Econ 310</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Econ 374</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><div><span><div><strong>Econ 301</strong></div></span></div></div></blockquote><div><div><br></div><div>It is recommended that each student consult with their faculty adviser regarding whether to take  a grade of "P" rather <span>than a letter grade for Spring, 2020 courses.  Here are some general considerations on whether to take a grade of "P" </span><span>rather than a letter grade for a particular course.</span></div><div><br></div><div><span><div>Because of the special arrangement for this semester, you will know what your letter <span>grade will be if you don't choose to take the course with a P for all of your Spring, 2020 courses.  </span><span>It should be  obvious that if you get an A in a course, it would make no sense to take a P instead.  For a course in which you </span><span>get a D, you would probably want to take a P to keep up your GPA at 2.0.  For a course in which you get a C, taking the letter </span><span>grade would help make sure that your GPA is at least at 2.0 and it would also count toward major requirements; however, you </span><span>may want to take a  P for this course in order to keep your GPA above a 2.0.     </span></div></span><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>For a course in which you get a B </span><span>there are competing considerations:  You may want to take a P in that course if you are aiming to keep your </span><span>GPA above a 3.0;  however, taking a P could signal to some that you </span><span>expected to get a grade of C or D rather than an A or B which signal you may want to avoid.  So  the decision </span><span>on taking a P rather than a B  would be how important maintaining your GPA above a 3.0 is.   </span></div></div></div></div>
