"Hi everyone! My name is Sahara Jayasinghe! I am a third year Financial Econ Major and IS minor at UMBC. I want to run for secretary because I want to be more involved with the Economics Community here at UMBC. I believe I would be a great fit because I have experience as a secretary, vice president, and as a president for another organization at UMBC. I have plenty of training and understand that student officers are expected follow specific guidelines. I also genuinely feel that I would easily be able to reach out to students in an inviting way leading to more interest and participation in the organization. Overall, I feel that I am more than capable for this position and I hope you all vote for me!!! Thank you! Stay safe! :)"</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Lexi Smith: </span></div><div><span>"I hope to be elected as secretary of the Econ Council of Majors because I want to support an organization that provides valuable education- and career-centered resources to Economics students at UMBC. The Econ Council of Majors performs the vital role of providing students with opportunities to grow and connect with professionals from the many different career fields that Economics majors may eventually choose to enter. I would love the opportunity to serve such an organization and help contribute to the wealth of information that ECOM provides. Additionally, I have plenty of experience that would perform this role effectively. I’ve developed a strong public speaking background through Rotary International’s public speaking competition, where I became a district finalist, which would inform my ability to help lead meetings and communicate effectively. I also have leadership experience in a virtual environment, as I am serving as a Team Leader with the Honors College this semester. Finally, I’ve served as a Study Abroad Ambassador with the UMBC Study Abroad office, where I created my own blog, as well as posts for UMBC’s Instagram account. This provided me with experience presenting an organization positively on social media, another important aspect of the secretary position. I hope you all will allow me to use this experience and my passion for economics to serve as your secretary. I would love to help create fun and informative events for the Econ Council of Majors, grow our membership, and strengthen our representation on campus!"</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Sarah Khanna: </span></div><div><span>"As a senior it would mean the world to me to create something unique and lasting for the Economics Council before I graduate. This organization has genuinely enriched my life and my goal as secretary of ECOM will be to pay it forward and do the same for others. I will help you all reach your academic and career goals through improved organization and communication. Specifically, I plan to streamline and improve our messaging and notification systems so you receive information that is 1) necessary and 2) relevant to you!</span></div><span>One idea I had was to make us an awesome, password-protected website exclusively for ECOM members that would centralize our various platforms and ensure that everyone receives all the valuable information that ECOM provides in an engaging format.
Not only would it feature announcements/deadlines and guest speaker recordings to keep everyone updated, it would also function as a discussion forum where we can review teachers and classes, give advice and ask questions, trade textbooks and PDFs, and anything else you would like to see more of. Additionally it would feature a networking tab to help you find and contact the right people, locate internship opportunities and job listings, etc. I am also adept at using Adobe Photoshop (graphic design is my passion :)) so our website will be beautiful.

As a peer note-taker at UMBC, I learned to provide detailed, concise, organized and fun notes at each class meeting. As a Community Assistant at Walker Ave. and an administrative assistant of many years, I developed excellent communication and correspondence skills. Additionally I am active on all social media platforms and I have experience creating visually appealing social media graphics. I plan to give ECOM more exposure in this way."
