It is officially spring recruiting season!  The Careers Center has a multitude of resources especially with the Feb 5th virtual career fair event occurring this Friday.  Many employers will be present, so please be sure to register now.

Additionally, there are two events outside of the career fair you may be interested in.  The first, is an EY information session sponsored by the Accounting Club on Monday Feb 8th at noon.  The link to the event is on the accounting club site, but I am also attaching a flyer in this post.  This event is for UMBC students interested in both internships as well as full-time offers in tax, accounting, and economics.

KPMG is also offering a series of webinars for students considering various jobs, beyond accounting and tax.  Their events will highlight various employment considerations for students and are also posted on the UMBC Career website.  Both companies are accepting applications now with deadlines at or near the end of the month.

Abstract

COVID‐19 was a shock to financial markets. On March 23, 2020 the S&P 500 index had fallen by over 31% from its closing value on the first trading day of the year and the NASDAQ index fell nearly 25%. Volatility increased. The CBOE VIX Index and trading volume spiked in March and remained elevated. But by mid‐November, the S&P 500 index was above its beginning of the year value by 10% and the NASDAQ index was 30% above. During large market declines, history tells us that investors can be rewarded if they buy, while withstanding the urge to sell. Surveys of investors, as well as those who provide investment advice, suggest that these history lessons were known and those who followed them, were well‐served. However, the COVID‐19 pandemic reinforces these lessons for investors and their advisors when encountering the next large market decline.

I would like to introduce you to the recently formed Association for Economic Research of Indigenous Peoples (AERIP) (https://www.aeripecon.org/) – an academic and professional association of economists, political scientists, sociologists, policy practitioners, and others who are interested in economic research related to Indigenous peoples across the globe.

In keeping with associations such as the National Economics Association, the American Society of Hispanic Economists, and the Sadie Collective, AERIP seeks to address substantive research and opportunity gaps in the economics discipline. It has only been a year since our inaugural reception at the 2020 Allied Social Sciences Association (ASSA) meetings, but through research events, conference sessions, and teaching resources, AERIP is already promoting teaching and research on topics related to the economic and social development of Native Americans and other Indigenous peoples. More specifically, our mission is to facilitate intellectual exchange, foster networking and information sharing, encourage and promote teaching and research on topics related to the economic development and wellbeing of Indigenous peoples. We also seek to educate students, prospective scholars and the public about the field.

The association is open (and currently free of charge) to all who are interested in this area (whether they are Native American or Indigenous or not).  According to analysis conducted by the Urban Institute (https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/how-diverse-your-economics-department), the UMBC  Economics department is one of just a handful of Economics departments that graduate American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander students in any significant numbers. Again, we are open to members from all backgrounds who have a research or teaching or policy interest in this area of economic research. This will take a good amount of time doing the reading and research, writing, data analysis, making graphics, etc. Therefore a team of two is better than just one person trying to do all of this before the end of April. ECON 493 (Independent Research) credit can be obtained.


Strongly preferred:

The average of the team member GPA is 3.5 or higher.

The team has at least 2 courses from: ECON 421, 374, 475, 463, with "A" grades.

Office Hours with the Federal Reserve Board – Current Fed RAs and staff (including me) will be hosting information sessions to highlight economics related employment opportunities for undergraduate students. This would be helpful for any of your students interested in applying to the Spring Recruiting Cycle for RA positions at the Board (application deadline is January 31), or those interested in getting a head start on next year. We will be hosting information sessions during our virtual office hours over the following dates in January:

Exploring Careers in Economics – Many of you may be aware of this ongoing public facing event organized to broaden awareness of careers in economics and to further develop a diverse pool of talent interested in the field. We have four recorded sessions available for viewing at https://www.federalreserve.gov/conferences/exploring-careers-in-economics.htm. Past keynote speakers include Governor Lael Brainard (Fall 2020), Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Raphael Bostic (Fall 2019) , and Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco President Mary Daly (Spring 2019). We are currently developing the Spring 2021 program, and you can expect to hear from our Public Information Outreach team in February or March for more information.

We believe that policy research is best when led by those with lived experience of the conditions they are exploring. The Policy Academies is looking to recruit a diverse cohort of undergraduate students for a year-long fellowship training program. The Academy begins with an intensive 10-week summer training program coordinated with our host partner the Urban Institute. The Academy Fellowship offers a unique and challenging program of knowledge-building, research skills-training, career development, and mentoring for undergraduates interested in advancing racial equity and economic justice through public policy analysis and research.
