<Title>Position Available: Junior Stanley Surrey Fellow</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>We would like to invite graduating seniors (graduating in 2022 or 2023) in the Economics Department to apply for the position of Junior Stanley Surrey Fellow in the Office of Tax Analysis (OTA), U.S. Department of the Treasury. </span></p><p><span>Attached are a general description of our office and the position, and an overview of the work experiences of previous Fellows. The fellowship is a great entry level position for economics students who want to work in public policy, further develop skills and who enjoy a fast-paced collegial environment.</span></p><p><span>The fellowship is a 2-year full-time, paid work position (GS-7 or 9 depending on experience) in Washington, D.C. and is often used as a bridge between undergraduate and graduate education. Fellows are up for promotion to a higher grade level after one year. Fellows must be U.S. citizens. Our office is currently on a hybrid work schedule with 2 required workdays in the Treasury Building. <Title>The FDIC Academic Challenge</Title>
<Tagline>For Students Interesting in Banking and Economics</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is proud to announce the opening of this year’s FDIC Academic Challenge, a competition for undergraduate students interested in banking and economics.  We would like to invite students from your institution to take part in this year’s Challenge, “The Impacts of Inflation on the Banking Sector.”  The Challenge will provide students the chance to work with their peers, sharpen their analytical thinking, and develop their academic and professional skills.</span></p><p><span>Teams of four or five undergraduate students, along with a faculty advisor, are welcome to submit a written response to this year’s Challenge.  Teams will have the opportunity to use multiple data sources to support their economic analysis and gain a greater understanding of the U.S. banking sector.  We will invite teams with top-scoring written responses in the first round to present their findings in front of a panel of judges in the final round of the Challenge on April 14, 2023.  We are planning to host the final round of the Challenge in person at FDIC facilities in the Washington, D.C. area.</span></p><p><span>First-round written submissions for the Challenge are due by <strong>November 18, 2022</strong>. Research Assistants typically work for two to three years, before going on to competitive graduate programs or pursuing other careers. </span><span></span></p><p><span>We seek individuals with strong academic records and excellent written and oral communication skills. Competitive candidates should have intermediate coursework in economics and a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics. We also look for prior research experience, demonstrated interest in economics, programming experience, and familiarity with statistical programming packages, such as STATA, MATLAB, and R.     <div class="html-content"><h5>Undergraduate Data Science Scholars – Call for Applications</h5><div><em>Have you worked with social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data?</em></div><div><em>Are you interested in how to extract useful knowledge from data?</em></div><div><br></div><div>The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) is partnering with the UMBC Department <span>of Information Systems for the UMBC Undergraduate Data Science Scholars Program </span><span>(DSS) in fall 2022. Students admitted to the program will work as teaching fellows (TFs) and </span><span>peer mentors. They will also network with UC Berkeley data science students, attend </span><span>special events, and be mentored by faculty. The DSS program welcomes undergraduate</span></div><div>scholars from multiple disciplines, including the social sciences, looking at all aspects of <span>data and its impact on society.</span></div><div><br></div><div>Responsibilities:</div><div>• Scholars will work as TFs and peer mentors for undergraduate students in IS296 <span>Foundations of Data Science. The class meets Mo/We 1-2:15 pm. The cohort of DSS </span><span>scholars will meet as a group with the IS296 instructor.
