Attached are a general description of our office and the position, and an overview of the work experiences of previous Fellows. The fellowship is a great entry level position for economics students who want to work in public policy, further develop skills and who enjoy a fast-paced collegial environment.

The fellowship is a 2-year full-time, paid work position (GS-7 or 9 depending on experience) in Washington, D.C. and is often used as a bridge between undergraduate and graduate education. Fellows are up for promotion to a higher grade level after one year. Fellows must be U.S. citizens. Our office is currently on a hybrid work schedule with 2 required workdays in the Treasury Building. The number of required workdays in the office may increase.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is proud to announce the opening of this year’s FDIC Academic Challenge, a competition for undergraduate students interested in banking and economics.  We would like to invite students from your institution to take part in this year’s Challenge, “The Impacts of Inflation on the Banking Sector.”  The Challenge will provide students the chance to work with their peers, sharpen their analytical thinking, and develop their academic and professional skills.

Teams of four or five undergraduate students, along with a faculty advisor, are welcome to submit a written response to this year’s Challenge.  Teams will have the opportunity to use multiple data sources to support their economic analysis and gain a greater understanding of the U.S. banking sector.  We will invite teams with top-scoring written responses in the first round to present their findings in front of a panel of judges in the final round of the Challenge on April 14, 2023.  We are planning to host the final round of the Challenge in person at FDIC facilities in the Washington, D.C. area.

First-round written submissions for the Challenge are due by November 18, 2022. To help students and faculty understand the Challenge and address any issues that arise during participation, FDIC economists will host an online question and answer session on October 3, 2022 at 7pm.  Information on how to access the session will be posted on the Academic Challenge website.

Competitive candidates should have intermediate coursework in economics and a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics. We also look for prior research experience, demonstrated interest in economics, programming experience, and familiarity with statistical programming packages, such as STATA, MATLAB, and R. Most positions require US citizenship, but some Reserve Banks consider non-U.S. citizen candidates.

The Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution is conducting our fall Research Assistant recruitment, for positions starting in summer 2023. Each year we employ approximately fifteen research assistants for two year appointments, preferably beginning between June 1 and August 1, 2023. The MEDA Board of Directors is very pleased to announce the Rhonda Joy Ray Scholarship. This Scholarship will be made to a MEDA student member or non-member* taking credit courses in Public Policy, Economic Development, or a related field. Students must attend a Maryland public or private Community College or four-year University and be a resident of Maryland. One scholarship award of up to $500 will be made in the Fall and Spring semesters when funds are available. Scholarship funds are to be used towards credit courses in the required fields and will be distributed directly to the student’s higher education institution on their behalf.
