    <div class="html-content"><div>Story Work for a Just Future: Exploring Diverse Experiences and Methods within an International Community of Practice</div><div><br></div><div>9th International Digital Storytelling Conference</div><div>March 30-April 1, 2020</div><div>Loughborough University, UK</div><div><br></div><div>Call for Papers and Presentation Proposals</div><div><br></div><div>Storytelling has been defined as ‘the artform of social interaction,’ not only for its inner dynamics, but also for its power to unlock grass-roots knowledge, explore dilemmas, develop community resilience, engender change.</div><div><br></div><div>Stories can generate empathy and trust in the audience and at the same time demonstrate their usefulness because they have the power to give meaning to human behaviors and to trigger emotions.</div><div><br></div><div>The conference is part of a multi-institutional, multinational, two-year process and program – organized in collaboration with UMBC, <a href="https://www.storycenter.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">StoryCenter,</a> <a href="https://learninglab.si.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access</a>, <a href="https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Montgomery College</a>, and <a href="https://www.patientvoices.org.uk/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Patient Voices</a> (UK) – that includes a series of follow-on activities in the Washington, D.C. area and in Maryland in 2021.</div><div><br></div><div>We are interested in proposals that will explore issues related to (but not limited to) the following sub-themes:<br></div><div><ul><li>[Past] Unwanted legacies and key learning to carry forward: difficult pasts; traumatic transitions; post-conflict scenarios; lessons learned from our histories; place-based learning and research; reflective learning.</li><li>[Present] Urgent story work: climate change; health; migration; social justice; education and action; deindustrialization, development, gentrification and displacement.</li><li>[Future] Speculative futures: building communities; crossing boundaries; human/animal and human/landscape relations; new forms of conversation; new digital environments, platforms and applications; storytelling for evaluation; curation; dissemination and storyteller safety.</li></ul></div><div><br></div><div>Abstracts are due October 15, 2019. <Title>Jessica Berman named Lipitz Professor for 2019-20</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><span>Jessica Berman,
     Professor of English and Director of the Dresher Center, has been named
     the Lipitz Professor of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences for 
    2019-20.<br> <br> As the Lipitz Professor, Dr. Berman will work on her 
    current book project, <em>Media Relations: Modernism and Global Radio</em>. In 
    this project, she studies global radio environments and the power of 
    media to create complex transnational and often interlinguistic 
    relationships. A truly global undertaking, <em>Media Relations</em> will connect 
    voices, languages, literatures, and music from India to the Caribbean 
    and from Argentina and Peru to Francophone West Africa. <br> <br> Congratulations to Jessica!</span></span></div>

    Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) invites applications for Summer 
    Faculty Research Fellowships (SFRF). Funding is intended to support and 
    promote significant humanities research at UMBC. <span>Proposals
     are welcome and will be considered from all full-time, tenured or 
    tenure-track UMBC faculty pursuing humanities research in the College of
     Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Proposals will be reviewed by 
    the Dresher Center Advisory Board.</span></div><div><br></div><div><strong><a href="https://dreshercenter.umbc.edu/files/2018/11/SFRF-2019-Dresher-Ctr-app.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dresher Center Summer Faculty Research Fellowship applications for Summer 2019 are due on February 15, 2019.</a></strong><br></div><div><br></div><div>Dresher Center Summer Faculty Research Fellows (individuals or groups)

    Ideal projects bring together 3-5 students with a UMBC faculty or staff member, who serves as the Project Leader</div><div><ul><li>to utilize diverse research methods, modes of analysis, and tools</li><li>to produce public-facing final projects. </li></ul>For example, projects could engage with archived texts and images to develop websites, build podcasts from oral history or ethnographic interviews, or work with communities on documentary films and digital stories. <br></div><div><br></div><div>The goal is to provide students with an interdisciplinary research experience while developing collaborative skills, telling effective stories, and amplifying voices to the general public.     <div class="html-content">The Dresher Center for the Humanities invites applications for two Residential Faculty Research Fellowships in Academic Year 2019-20. One Faculty Fellow will be in residence in Fall 2019 and one in Spring 2020. The UMBC Faculty Research Fellows will join our residential Inclusion Imperative Visiting Faculty Fellows in the Dresher Center. Dresher Center fellowships offer the gift of time, space, and collegial conversation within a robust humanities center environment which will, in turn, enhance the UMBC conversation surrounding inclusive excellence.<div><br></div><a href="https://dreshercenter.umbc.edu/files/2018/10/ResidentialFacFellowsCFP-AY2019-20.docx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Dresher Center Residential Faculty Research Fellowship applications

HTLab Course Transformation funding will support faculty and student training, digital and other tools, classroom technical support, speakers or consultants, stipends for community participants, and other teaching resources for community-engaged humanities teaching and learning that addresses the issues of race, equity, inclusion, and justice.<br><br>Proposals from full-time UMBC faculty will be accepted for up to $4,000 in HTLab support (per course) for between one and three courses to be offered in spring 2018 or fall 2019.
