    <p>A new start-up cybersecurity company, Cyves, was launched recently by
     UMBC’s George Karabatis, associate professor of information systems, 
    and Ahmed AlEroud M.S. ‘12, information systems, Ph.D. ‘14, information 
    systems. TEDCO, an organization created by the Maryland State 
    Legislature to support tech entrepreneurship, and InnovativeTech 
    Ventures, led by Gerard Eldering, generated the funding through a grant

<Title>Cybersecurity Students Present at NCCoE Open House</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>UMBC CYBR MPS students Zack Rich and Jeff Scheier are interns at the <a href="http://nccoe.nist.gov/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE)</a> in Rockville, MD.</div><div><br></div><div>On October 15, 2014, they presented NCCoE use case projects to leading cybersecurity experts from both the private and public domains at the NCCoE’s fall Open House on education and workforce development.</div><div><br></div><div>Zack’s project aims to simplify the risk analysis and standards mapping for the health IT sector to create a bridge between security technologies and government standards recommendations. Jeff’s project focuses on providing a foundation for e-commerce businesses to implement easy and low cost network security systems.</div><div><br></div><div>Both students are enrolled in <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/shadygrove/cyber/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s graduate cybersecurity program at the Universities at Shady Grove campus</a>. <Title>Graduate Cybersecurity Internships at NCCoE</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>The NIST National Cybersecurity Center for Excellence (NCCoE) is seeking full- and part-time paid interns from UMBC graduate students studying cybersecurity at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG). The program is part of NCCoE’s ongoing efforts to build and sustain academic partnerships in the Montgomery County region.</div><div><br></div><div>The NCCoE internship will identify and immerse students in practical cybersecurity experiences at the NCCoE in Rockville, MD. NCCoE’s Cybersecurity Graduate Researchers will work in a state-of-the-art facility with expert cybersecurity practitioners from government and academia, along with engineers from some of the largest and most influential IT and cybersecurity companies in the world, including Intel, Microsoft, Symantec, HP, Cisco, Splunk, Palo Alto Networks, and Hytrust.</div><div><br></div><div>During their internships, NCCoE’s Graduate Cybersecurity Researchers may assist NCCoE staff and contractors in areas such as:</div><div><br></div><div><ul><li><span>the design and building of cybersecurity reference designs to demonstrate platform capabilities that address one or more challenges identified by industry.</span></li><li><span>mentoring undergraduate cybersecurity researchers and helping build teams to work on research projects.</span></li><li><span>working with NCCoE industry partners and collaborators to identify relevant commercially available technologies that can serve as a component of these reference designs.</span></li><li><span>supporting the NCCoE lab infrastructure, including the provisioning of hardware, creation and management of both virtual and physical equipment, and the installation and configuration of cybersecurity tools and components.</span></li></ul></div><div>These NCCoE internships are open to UMBC cybersecurity students enrolled at the USG campus who are US citizens.     <div class="html-content"><div><a href="http://www.umbc.edu/trainctr/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Training Centers</a> announced new Cybersecurity Academy certificate programs that provide highly-focused skills training and practical experience to address the cyber workforce training needs of the military, the intelligence community, federal civilian agencies, and the commercial sector in the Mid-Atlantic region. <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/trainctr/cyber/index.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The Cybersecurity Academy</a> includes four non-credit certificate programs: Cyber Foundations, Cybersecurity, Cyber Development and Cyber Operations. These certificate programs combine multiple skills training and hands-on problem solving guided by expert instructors to create high-impact learning. The skills mastered in the programs prepare participants with immediate, on-the-job effectiveness to tackle real-world situations.</div><div><br></div><div>The Certificate in Cyber Operations program starts June 24 and features a rigorous curriculum that delivers a focused set of skills reinforced by multiple industry certifications, including CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, Cisco Certified Network Associate and Certified Ethical Hacker.     <div class="html-content">Earlier this week, a security research company released a report providing technical documentation and near-certain proof that China is engaging in cyber-espionage activities against the US.  While that's not exactly a new discovery, it provided a much deeper degree of public information used in presenting its findings.<br><br>On Public Radio International’s program, The World UMBC’s Rick Forno discussed the report’s implications.<br><br>Forno says he was on the program to discuss American cybersecurity readiness in light of the heightened media interest in cybersecurity following the report's release.<br><br>The fact that the networks and our critical infrastructure systems are still vulnerable after years of analysis and public warnings about their security posture said Forno, “is still very disturbing.”<br><br>“Those systems that we view as critical national infrastructures [such as those controlling power and water distribution] he said, “should be separated from the public internet.” But he adds, “When rubber meets the road [in terms of American cybersecurity] I don’t see a lot of improvements.”<br><br>The U.S.,” he said, “has the most vulnerable cybersecurity infrastructure on the planet.”<a href="http://www.theworld.org/2013/02/the-world-02-19-2013/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Listen to the interview </a><br><br>Story originally posted on <a href="http://umbcinsights.wordpress.com/2013/02/21/rick-forno-cybersecurity-on-the-world/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Insights Weekly</a>. <br><br>Richard Forno is the Graduate Program Director for UMBC's <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/cyber/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Graduate Cybersecurity Program</a>. <br><br><br><br></div>
