Leadership Maryland announced today that Sally J. Scott '22, Director of Community Leadership Graduate Programs at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, has completed the professional development program dedicated to building a better Maryland by harnessing the strength of its local business and community leaders. 

Leadership Maryland honored Scott, a resident of Baltimore City, and the entire Class of 2022 at its 29^th annual graduation ceremony held December 6 at the Hilton Baltimore BWI Airport. As a graduate, Scott is now a member of Leadership Maryland’s powerful alumni network, consisting of more than 1,300 esteemed leaders from all industries and regions of the state.

UMBC has long provided support to city schools, and is prepping future educators for vacancies in Baltimore city schools.

The Baltimore Banner recently published an article highlighting our success story in providing tutoring through a Reach Together Tutoring program that we started in 2021. 

Essentially, the tutoring program uses federal funds to pay undergraduates to tutor students. Tutoring is a pathway to better education and helping students gain competency in subject areas where they struggle. 

UMBC’s Reach Together program has provided 10,000 hours of tutoring since its inception.

One of the best results from this program are the 355 students tutored and the undergraduates who then go onto pursue careers as teachers. In fact, some students like Rehema Mwaisela learned of her love for teaching through the Sherman STEM Teacher Scholar program and will graduate this spring. She will then have a choice to pursue a one-year Masters of Arts in education at UMBC to become a certified teacher or enter the teaching profession with a provisional license and earn her master’s while teaching.
