Ricardo Tablada ’18, M.P.S. Biotechnology, was able to do just that. Within a short time period of embarking on his learning journey at UMBC, he landed a position at a Biotech firm and began making a difference in the lives of others.

Recently, Riadul Islam, assistant professor of computer science and electrical engineering at UMBC, received a $200,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study how to better detect and protect against these cyber attacks. The criticality of keeping our infrastructures and tools safe from hackers has never been more important.

The field of IO Psychology is a great place for professionals who thrive in analyzing issues and providing potential solutions. Saad Arshad ’21, M.P.S. IO Psychology, enjoyed this aspect of his capstone experience.

“What intrigued me the most about the field of IO Psychology was studying an organization and then being able to diagnose and solve a problem. I enjoyed working with teams of people as we figured out the problems and following through with a strategic plan to solve them.”

She shared, “As data scientists, we have a lot of responsibility on us. We make or break platforms. We can make people’s lives by using the data and we can break their lives by using their data incorrectly. At UMBC, they train us how not to take advantage of the data. ? Data science is not just about the data, but it’s also about understanding human emotions along with the data. That’s how we can make informed decisions.”
