On July 29th Microsoft will publicly release its latest operating system Windows 10. While we eagerly anticipate the release of Windows 10 and all that it has to offer, we also ask for your patience while we thoroughly test this new operating system in our campus environment.
DoIT has done some preliminary testing and believes Windows 10 will be a a major advancement. However, before we release this for general campus availability we will need to test Windows 10 against every application UMBC uses in its production environment. DoIT will start that process of testing Windows 10 immediately following its final release and we will keep you posted on our progress.
Once we receive the software we will release it to the campus community via our Software Downloads page with the recommendation to not install unless you are certain it will support your critical applications. UMBC’s campus agreement with Microsoft will allow us to distribute the Windows 10 on our Software Downloads page to faculty and staff. Windows 10 is a free upgrade for personal machines running a licensed copy of Microsoft Windows 7 or 8.1.
Please see the Windows 10 Q&A for answers to common questions regarding the upgrade of your personal machine.
