Upgrades to Residence Hall Wireless
Faster Wi-Fi and 2,500+ access points
The Residential Life office (RL) and the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) have partnered to implement a brand-new wireless system for on-campus residents.
Providing technology solutions that enhance the student experience is among DoIT’s core values and through this collaborative project we have:
- Improved wireless access for students by enhancing wireless coverage in key areas.
- Increased network speeds by installing over 2,500 new wireless access points with Wi-Fi 6 capabilities.
- Reduced connectivity challenges by adopting a cloud-native architecture.
- Created a personal, home-like experience through the new Retriever Home wireless network.
This project started more than 18 months ago when DoIT began working closely with the Office of Residential Life to test, pilot, and redesign the wireless system throughout the residential complexes. This project is the culmination of that collaboration and has been driven by the experience of student residents through Residential Student Association Townhalls, surveys, and other means of soliciting feedback from student residents.
This project would not have been possible without the tremendous effort of our student employees in the Network and Telecommunications teams of DoIT.

Campus Phone Upgrades
All departmental phones have been converted!
The Division of Information Technology is excited to announce that it has completed the migration of all main campus phones to our new phone system. Beginning in 2020, the project was accelerated to help meet the needs of remote and hybrid work through the integration with Webex. Along with features to support today’s mobile work needs, the new phone system will offer improved resilience and reliability and provides a foundation for growth that will meet the needs of the campus into the future.
Leveraging the Webex platform for calling not only provides staff and faculty with a campus phone number that is available from everywhere but also rounds out a suite of communication and collaboration features, including virtual meetings and messaging, that are natively a part of the Webex portfolio.

Reduction in off-campus network speeds due to cable cut
Monday 9/23 at around noon a contractor working just outside of UMBC cut through a set of fiber optic networking cables that provide network service to UMBC's main campus, and to our IMET facility in downtown Baltimore.
Until service is restored, the campus is operating without our 100gbit/s high speed link to the Internet 2 research and education network, and one of our 10gbit/s links to the Internet. We still have a full 10gbit/s link to the Internet and can reach all of the Internet 2 connected sites through this remaining connection.
At this point we are working to have the cable repaired, and hope to have news on that front as the week progresses. During this time the campus does have adequate bandwidth for all normal activities and should not see a noticeable difference in network performance, but we no longer have a redundant link outside until this cable is repaired.
We have patched through a temporary connection to the IMET facility downtown and have restored service to that building as of late Tuesday afternoon.
We will continue to update the campus as we have additional information.

Software Bug in ResNet Wireless System
In response to residential student feedback, we recently partnered with the Office of Residential Life and updated all residential buildings with wireless hardware upgrades that provide the fastest speeds available. However, with innovation and new hardware can come unexpected challenges. RT tickets from residential students helped us identify a system-wide issue that may impact your user experience.
DoIT has identified a software bug in the residential wireless system. The bug can cause devices to connect to access points further away a student’s room they necessary, resulting in slower, less consistent speeds and occasional disconnects from the wireless network. This problem is present on Eduroam and on Visitor and Campus wireless and it's an issue on the devices themselves, not just a single wireless network.
Please note that we do not believe this problem is present in the academic areas of the campus, only in the Residence Halls.
We have been working with the vendor, Cisco, to get a version of software that fixes the bug and they are currently vetting a patch through their testing lab. In the meantime, we have worked with Cisco to develop an interim solution to minimize the impact on you. This interim solution involves monitoring the system for certain error logs caused by this bug, and resetting the access points as needed. We apologize for the inconvenience and, as soon as the new software is available, we will be applying it throughout the Residence Halls immediately.
