The taki.rs.umbc.edu cluster is now back online.
User node taki-usr1 is available for users to access the cluster environment.
The batch, interactive, and high_mem partitions are available. The remaining partitions will be brought online in the next day.
Please note that there were updates to various aspects of the cluster environment as a part of this upgrade. Therefore some software packages compiled by groups or individual users may need to be recompiled.
If anyone has issues running jobs, please submit an RT ticket with as much information as possible in the usual way. That is, navigate to hpcf.umbc.edu, then select "HPCF Help Request Form" from the "Forms" dropdown menu.

In this first of a series of updates, we’ll give a description of what HelioCampus (Helio, for short) is and why we’re investing in it, provide an overview of UMBC’s goals for the project, and summarize what we’re currently working on and what’s next.
HelioCampus was established as an independent company after being formed at UMGC. It provides a data analytics platform covering the student lifecycle, institutional finance, and advancement. Designed to run using Amazon Web Services, Helio provides UMBC with the next-generation decision support services we need to operate more strategically and sustainably (from a financial perspective).
Put simply, Helio integrates our enterprise data warehouse with advanced reporting and visualization tools. With it, we’ll be better able to share information from our systems and answer key questions through analytics, data storytelling, and data science and do it easier and faster. Helio’s a key component of an integrated infrastructure for academic planning, assessment, and analytics and it helps to support our strategic plan, strategic enrollment plan, and the recommendations of our Middle States accreditation Self-Study.
Our goals for Helio are to broaden and deepen our use of analytics to increase enrollment, improve student success, shorten time to degree, ensure financial sustainability, and accelerate gift giving...all key elements of UMBC’s plans to weather the current environment and position ourselves for growth and success going forward.
Helio uses Tableau visualization software. The first set of visualizations and tools, often called dashboards, has already been deployed to a small group of campus users to allow them to test the platform. These dashboards focus on metrics related to admissions, enrollment, retention, and graduation. People using Tableau have had very positive reactions to its ease of use and power.
We’re delighted to tell you that the implementation is on schedule. We will be holding regular meetings starting in the first quarter of 2021 that will showcase Helio’s and Tableau for people interested in learning more and we’ll provide training for people who would like it. Look for another installment in this series with the details.

Large Internet Outage Across East Coast Around Noon Today
There are widespread reports of Internet outages across the east coast that started around 11:30am this morning. These are affecting access to various services including Gmail, Blackboard, WebEx, and many other services that UMBC students, faculty and staff use. It is also broadly affecting Verizon FIOS and other providers, so accessing sites outside of work or school will also be affected.
We would ask people to be patient, we have seen indications service is already being restored in many area. In the meantime, if you are on a video conference for work or class, dialing in with you phone should help ensure your audio remains clear even if the video is experiencing issues due to these outages.

Waitlist Students Have Automatic Access to Bb Courses
Students must officially enroll no later than 10th Day
Update Mar 22, 2021: After extensive internal review to identify and resolve unanticipated challenges, the waitlist process will be discontinued.
Update Mar 9, 2021: Language has been modified to clarify that the waitlist role will only be used for the Spring 2021 semester. Waitlisted students will not have automatic access to Bb Courses beyond Spring 2021.
In an effort to support students’ educational needs, for the Spring 2021 term, waitlisted students will be temporarily enrolled in their Blackboard course(s). DoIT’s intention through this workflow change is to remove roadblocks that might otherwise impede early and sustained engagement. User access will expire on 10th day of the semester, which will be February 8th for the Spring 2021 term, unless a student has officially enrolled in the course.
With access to a course's Blackboard shell, waitlisted students will be able to receive course communication, review course materials and content, participate in synchronous sessions, and submit assignments. Faculty can identify waitlisted students by the “Waitlisted” role assigned to them on the Blackboard course roster. The waitlist enrollments are updated once a day in Blackboard and works in both Original and Ultra courses.
From a Blackboard Original shell, instructors can view Users and Groups > Users to view their roster:
From a Blackboard Ultra shell, instructors can click on Class Roster under Details & Actions:
To remain in the course beyond 10th day, students must officially enroll in the course roster through the Schedule of Classes. Students who are still waitlisted after the 10th day will lose access to the course's Blackboard shell.
This supplement to the enrollment process will reduce the previous delay experienced by waitlisted students and ensures they have access to critical course materials to stay on track with the rest of the class.

Cornerstone Student Job Scam
It's Still Showing Up!
Below is an example of a job scam that has been reported to the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) at the end of last year. This scam follows the pattern that has been seen a lot for recent job scams hitting UMBC.
From: jennifer scott <jenscott0419@gmail.com> Date: December 29, 2020 To: @umbc.edu Subject: UMBC PART TIME JOB OFFER Dear student, We got your contact through your school database and I'm happy to inform you that our reputable company Cornerstone® is currently running a student empowerment program. This program is completely school oriented as it has been designed not to deter you from all school activities which is priority for you and this organization. This program is to help loyal and hardworking students like you secure a part time job with an attractive weekly salary. TO PROCEED WITH THIS JOB OFFER, KINDLY REPLY TO THIS MAIL WITH YOUR ALTERNATE E-MAIL ADDRESS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE FULL JOB DESCRIPTION. Best Regards, Jennifer Scott, HR Recruit Manager/Consultant Cornerstone® Staffing-Solutions.

The job scam above is from Jennifer Scott <jenscott0419@gmail.com> and is offering students a fake job at Cornerstone. Please note that this job offer is fake and is not a real job offer. The scammer has the goals of getting the students’ personal information and of scamming users of their money with fraudulent checks.
If the student replies to the first email in these scams, the scammer has been known to reply asking for more information like personal phone number, full name, personal email address, date of birth and mailing address. If the student provides this information the scammer could then start texting the student as well as send a fraudulent check to their mailing address. If you receive a check from this or any similar scam please do not try and deposit the check.
What to do now?
If you do receive this or a similar scam, please DO NOT respond any further or click on any URLs. If you have provided any banking or financial information, please notify your bank or financial institution immediately. If you have been sent a check, you should not attempt to cash or deposit it. If you have deposited a check already, please contact your bank and tell them that it may be part of a scam.
Whether or not you responded to the scam or not, please forward the message (with the email headers) to security@umbc.edu. We will also keep track of any other information you submit about the scammers, such as their phone numbers. If you were sent a check or other materials, please send pictures of it and the envelope they came in.
