McAfee to be Replaced by Microsoft's Forefront Anti Virus
Starting the week of March 26th the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) will begin phasing out McAfee as our antivirus (AV) software and moving to Microsoft’s AV software named Forefront.
This is being done to provide the campus with better virus and malware protection. DoIT has been testing Microsoft’s Forefront software for eight (8) months and it has consistently exceeded McAfee detection and removal capabilities. You do not need to do anything to get this software if your machine is in Active Directory as it will be installed automatically. If you have any questions please contact the technology support center at x53838.
Why is this being done?
Microsoft antivirus/antimalware software (name Forefront) offers superior protection over McAfee. There is also the added benefit of Forefront being less expensive than McAfee
What about my home computer?
For our customers using McAfee at home we recommend installing Microsoft Security Essentials which is the home version of the client we will be using on campus. It is a free download and will remove McAfee cleanly upon installation. Security Essentials will automatically be updated every day as well as when you install your monthly system updates from Microsoft.

I’m a Mac user, what does this mean for me?
For our Mac users we recommend using one of the free antivirus software packages listed below.

Do I need to install anything on my work computer?
No, if your computer is part of UMBC’s Active Directory this software will be automatically installed for you and McAfee will be automatically removed. If you have a PC and are not joined to Active Directory please see our software downloads page for the Forefront installer http://www.umbc.edu/downloads/mcafee/
When is this happening?
DoIT will begin installing Forefront the week of March 26th. Several departments will get the software each day with a completion date of April 27th for the entire campus to be moved over.
Will I notice anything?
Yes, during the installation you will see the McAfee v-shield icon disappear and be replaced by a shield enclosed in a green box. You can continue to use your computer while DoIT installs the software as we have not seen any noticeable performance impact on the desktop PC.
I’m not comfortable updating my computer, can I get help?
Yes, please contact our technology support center and one of our staff would be happy to walk you through the installation process
I don’t want to switch right now, can I keep using McAfee?
Yes, your current version will continue to receive updates from McAfee but DoIT strongly recommends you change your antivirus software as soon as time permits.

FA306 Document camera
New technology installed in FA306 - try it out!
AV Services, with support from the Provost, has permanently installed a high resolution document camera in FA306. I've attached a link to a short video below demonstrating the use of the camera in the space. I encourage you to try it out, and would be happy to schedule a short demonstration with any who are interested.
What can I do with it?
The camera can send the video of any object or writing to the data projector so it appears on the enormous screen. You can pivot the camera in many directions, including toward the seated area. It can zoom in on very small objects. If you want to try some advanced features, it can record images or video with audio to an SD memory card (user supplied).
What about transparencies?
You can display them using the camera without placing a light underneath. You may need to adjust the head a little to reduce glare.
What about marker board users?
The document camera can take the place of using marker or chalk boards. However, two marker boards will remain in the room for those who prefer them.
Why doesn't the screen go up?
The motor has failed, and it is very expensive to replace or repair.
How about a quick set of basic instructions?
Turn on projector using ON (black box on wall)
Wait 60 seconds (projector is warming up)
Press the DOC CAM selection near the ON button (black box on wall)
Press the Power button on the document camera base
Postion camera as desired, use zoom on remote or camera base
What is the make and model of the unit?

What do I do in the meantime?
A standard mobile projection cart is parked in the space until the new system is operational. The cart has a data projector, PC with monitor and internet, laptop VGA cable, DVD/VHS player, and amplified speaker. Use the three button screen controls to the right of the marker board near the window (note: the six button panel controls the blinds). We will not leave you without the presentation technology tools you expected in this space.
How will I operate the new system when installed?
Users will be alerted in advance via email. The new system will operate in much the same fashion as in other campus classrooms. Training opportunities will be advertised to the users. A short youtube video will be posted demonstrating basic operation. Instructions will be posted locally, on the AV web site, and via DoIT FAQ.

What is going on?
Work is under way to replace the AV system. The existing system
died, for all practical purposes, at the end of the fall semester. New parts
are being assembled to get the system operational. It may take a few weeks to
complete. This is our number one maintenance priority.

New Features in Bb Learn 9.1 SP6
The December 23 upgrade of the Blackboard Learn 9.1 system to Service Pack 6 has introduced a variety of new features and enhancements, several of which are listed below.
1. Increased Browser Support: Blackboard is now compatible with Internet Explorer 9, Safari 5, and stable release channels of Firefox and Chrome.
2. Timed Assessments: Attempt information for timed assessments includes details on how much time the student spent on the attempt versus how much time was allotted. Instructors can now choose to make the timed assessment save and submit automatically when the timer expires, or to allow the assessment to continue beyond the allotted time.
3. Interactive Rubrics: Instructors can now create interactive rubrics for gradable content items including Blogs, Journals, Wikis, Discussion Boards, Assignments, Tests etc. When creating a rubric, instructors can assign weights to categories, allowing the same rubric to be used across multiple items with different possible points. Instructors can interact with any associated rubric for grading in a grid or list view, and Feedback can be typed for each criteria as well as the entire assessment. Rubrics can be made visible to students at any time, before or after grading has occurred.
4. Enhanced "Needs Grading" Tool: Gradable Blogs, Journals, Wikis, and Discussion Board activity can appear in Needs Grading status in the Grade Center and on the Needs Grading page. When an instructor chooses to make an interactive tool gradable, they will also have the option to choose how many interactions will place the item in needs grading status. A Discussion Board forum, for instance, might be set to only appear in Needs Grading status after a student has made three posts, rather than with each individual post.

Blackboard Down for Maintenance from 10 pm Fri. 1/27 to 1 am Sat. 1/28
The UMBC Blackboard server will be down for three hours of scheduled maintenance from 10 pm Friday, Jan. 27 to 1 am Saturday, Jan. 28. DoIT staff will be performing MS Windows Server maintenance and updates during this time.
