WT2014 and SP2014 Bb Course Shells Created on 12/2
WT2014 Bb shells are located at http://bb-winter.umbc.edu
UMBC Blackboard (Bb) course shells for both SP2014 and WT2014 were created on December 2, 2013. The course shells for SP2014 are located on the Bb production server at http://blackboard.umbc.edu.
As previously announced at the start of this semester, due to the Bb upgrade January 8-10, all WT2014 courses will be run on a separate server at http://bb-winter.umbc.edu. All courses and organizations on the Bb production server will be unavailable during the upgrade from January 8-10. If you require any past Bb content for your WT2014 courses please make sure to export it prior to January 8, 2014.
Enrollments for both SP2014 and WT2014 courses will continue to be updated daily. Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record
listed. The addition of new course sections and instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in
SA, and will update hourly.
If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created and enrolled automatically.
Additionally, in situations where one instructor is teaching multiple sections of the same course, by default all sections will be combined into one Bb course shell. If you want to have separate shells for different sections, or if you need a shell for for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request or submit an RT ticket with your request.
As a reminder, all Bb course shells are initially unavailable to students until the instructor makes it available.

LDAP & Webadmin downtime on 11/22/2013
Hello all.
On Friday, November 22nd starting at 2pm
LDAP Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance. During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable. Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.
The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates. The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Friday, November 22nd.
During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.

On January 23 and 24 the New Media Studio and the Department of Media and Communications Studies will offer a two-day hands-on workshop exploring digital storytelling using the iPad. The workshop will center on the creation of short reflective digital movies using iMovie. Through this experience, participants will gain insight into the possibilities that visual assignments offer for their own teaching. The workshop will also include time for pedagogical discussions and showcasing what some UMBC faculty are currently doing to integrate new tools in the classroom. Participants will orient themselves with various education and digital production apps, sharing how the iPad can become a valuable asset in their classrooms (planning, content delivery, and creative production).
We will use new iPad Airs provided for the workshop by DoIT. Lunch will be provided by the Faculty Development Center. The workshop will run 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day and will be held in the Dresher Center conference room (PAH 216.)
The workshop is limited to eleven participants and is open to UMBC faculty, staff and graduate assistants. Priority will be given to faculty. To reserve a seat in the workshop please email shewbrid@umbc.edu .

Blackboard Down for Maintenance 10 pm 11/22 to 1 am 11/23
The UMBC Blackboard server will be down from 10 pm Friday 11/22 to 1 am Saturday 11/23. This down time is during the regularly scheduled maintenance window and is necessary for DoIT staff to perform system-wide upgrades, including patches and fixes, need to be applied. RT Downtime Notice for 12-14-2013
I wanted to reach out to this group and provide an update on some system upgrades scheduled for RT over the next 8 months or so.
RT has been in place almost 5 years now running on the same hardware. The first phase is to upgrade the database server hardware.
This update will occur the morning of December 14, 2013 starting at 6am with an anticipated completion by 2pm. A version of this new setup will be available for testing the week of 12-3-2013. Please share any issues you may find asap so we can do our best to remedy the problem.
This upgrade will provide some improvements in stability and performance.
Our second phase will be the migration of the RT Application to new hardware. This is currently schedule to be completed by March 2014.
Both of the phases, although complex for the technical team, should be seamless to the end-user community as we are not changing the actual application.
The final phase (3) will be completed in June of 2014 and this will involve the actual application used by all users of RT. This phase will require more testing and possible training to power users depending on the new features that may be available by that time. Currently we are on version 4.0.6 and version 4.2.0 is now available. I will review the product for the most stable and up to date version available by the beginning Q2 2014.
Please feel free to provide any feedback or questions concerning any of the 3 phases I have identified.
Lastly, John and I have discussed the possibility of having a users group just prior to the holidays to catch up on the many uses of RT in your offices as well as introduce some new practices being employed by many new members of the RT community.

Known Issue: UMBC Users Cannot Log Into Private iTunes U
Campus users have been unable to gain access
DoIT is reporting a known issue for campus users trying to access the private, UMBC-authenticated version of iTunes U, including links to associated Blackboard course sites. As of September 20, 2013, faculty and students can no longer access the associated iTunes U space. Recorded media can still be uploaded to the area but only DoIT system administrators can access it. When you try to open the iTunes U link, the browser opens a new window and displays a blank page. This is the same symptom when using Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Google Chrome. The public, unauthenticated version of UMBC iTunes at itunes.umbc.edu is not affected.
DoIT has been working to resolve this issue with Apple and Vanderbilt University, developers of the 3rd party “building block” plugin that allowed faculty to automatically publish recorded screencasts from our Camtasia Relay lecture capture software and link these to a current Blackboard course. To date, we have not been able to resolve this issue.
As a work around for publishing Camtasia Relay screencasting recordings for a class, DoIT has configured UMBC's Box.com to receive all recordings from the Camtasia Relay server. For specific instructions please visit:

FY14 IT User Support: Q1 Review (July, Aug, Sept)
Summary & Drill-Down Reports Show RT, FAQ and Phone Trends
To help provide more timely review of key IT user support metrics throughout the year and not just at the end, DoIT has summarized the following first quarter data for FY14:
- RT (Request Tracker) tickets, created and resolved.
- FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), search terms and referrals.
- Phone calls to the TSC (Technology Support Center).
- Year-to-date comparisons with FY13 show a decrease in overall ticket volume.
- Overall FAQ usage has more than doubled over the same period, but users are spending less time and visiting fewer pages per session.
- Phone calls declined in July and August, increased slightly in September
Note: A recent
Educause presentation by the Campus Computing Survey shows that effective integration of teaching, learning and technology as well as general IT user support are among the highest priorities of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and other higher ed IT leaders.

DoIT Runs Pilot Comparing Clickers to Scantron Testing
BIOL142 Participants to Share Experiences at 11/22 Brown Bag
To help evaluate clickers as a possible alternative to scantron “bubble sheet” assessments, DoIT partnered with Dr. Tamara Mendelson in BIOL 142 “Foundations of Biology: Ecology and Evolution” to conduct a five-week pilot of the Triton Data Collection System (DCS) by Turning Technologies. Mendelson and her teaching assistants from all four sections of the 295-student course will share their experiences during an informal brown bag lunch on Friday, November 22, at noon. A box lunch will be provided for registered participants.
The goal of the pilot was to see if and how students might accept clickers as an alternative to Scantrons when given a choice between the two. During the first two weeks of the pilot that began just after the 10th day of classes this semester, students were only given Scantron bubble sheets for their weekly discussion section quizzes led by one of Dr. Mendelson’s TAs: Archer Larned, Michael Martin, Karan Odom and Tracy Smith. In the next two weeks, TAs asked students to only use the Triton DCS clickers. In the fifth and final week, students were given a choice between the two methods. The results? Overall, 88 percent of students chose the Triton DCS clickers over Scantrons, though individual sections ranged from a low of 81 percent to a high of 95 percent. Individual student comments included the following:
“clickers are easier to use than scantrons, clickers are a better quiz method”;
“I would like to continue using clickers because it is much more faster since we do not have to fill in a bunch of bubbles or waste paper. It is more fun!”;
“clickers are easy and efficient”;
“I would like to continue using clickers because once you get used to them they are very easy”.
- "clickers are easier but I like having all answers in front of me on the scantron"
While the Triton clickers can provide rapid feedback to students and richer insights to faculty about how long students take to answer a question, review their answer or change it, there is a difference between a discussion section quiz and midterm or final exam. By design, neither DoIT, Dr. Mendelson or Turning Technologies wanted to pilot student acceptance of the Triton clickers for a high stakes assessment. However, during the 11/22 Brown Bag, Dr. Mendelson and her TAs will share their experiences about the pilot, and offer their own estimation of whether clickers could work as an alternative to Scantron exams.
