Reminder - RT Downtime Notice for 12-14-2013 This is a reminder that the database server will be updated the morning of December 14, 2013 starting at 6am with an anticipated completion by 2pm.

A version of this new setup is available for testing. You can access the test RT system by:

1. Get into the VPN. (vpn.umbc.edu). This is for non-production only
2. Go to rt-dev.core.umbc.edu. You should see a different color theme for this system to ensure you are not in RT production. The data is a few weeks old but should still provide adequate scenarios for testing.

Please share any issues you may find asap so we can do our best to remedy the problem.

Over the last year we have seen a number of academic and administrative departments begin to use Skype video conferencing service to interview candidates for positions at UMBC or graduate students applying for admission.

To aid in this effort, DoIT has set up a Skype-enabled conference room in Engineering 024. This room has 55" display with a web-camera, remote microphone, and speakers.  This room can accommodate a search committee of 6-10 participating in the conference.

This equipment can be reserved utilizing the AV Services Request form located athttp://doit.umbc.edu/request-av-services/ .  Users will need to bring their own laptop to attach to the system (Skype loaded on the laptop) or reserve a laptop from AV Services using the same AV Services Request form.  AV services will be glad to work with you to provide technical support in setting up the video conference.  For further information, contact AV Services at 5-2461.

Starting in January and subject to user demand, as well as support staff capacity, DoIT is going to experiment with offering regular, informal Drop-In consulting sessions that focus on one of the many web-based tools we support. Examples include the following:

Given variation in user needs and scheduling, the Drop-In format will be as follows:

  1. Orientation(5 minutes): A quick overview of what the tool does. If all you want is a demo, come early.
  2. Recommendations (10 minutes): 1-2 tips based on our observations from providing support for RT tickets and FAQs, as well identification of effective practices & practitioners.
  3. Q & A (40 minutes): This is your time. What do you want to know? What's a problem you'd like to solve or a new opportunity you'd like to explore?
Since the DoIT Drop-Ins are focused on web-based technologies, you can Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), or you can use our Google Chromebooks or computer lab machine. One exception: The Box sync application will not work on a Chromebook. However, most drop-ins will be offered in the Technology Support Center (TSC) that has a supply of 15-20 Chromebooks for hands-on exploration. Other locations will include Engineering 025 or 023.

Fall hours at the Technology Support Center (TSC) will end on December 18th.


Beginning on December 19th, the TSC will adjust it’s hours to fit with to the Library’s hours. These hours will last until December 23rd:


Monday - Friday: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Sunday: 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm


The TSC will be closed from December 24th-January 1st. We will have limited staff working remotely through the RT ticketing system only. If you need assistance during this time, you can submit a ticket by clicking here.


We will reopen on January 2nd with our adjusted Winter hours:


Monday-Thursday: 8:00am - 8:00 pm

Friday: 8:00 - 6:00pm

Audit regulations require that all machines used for administrative or academic use be under active security maintenance by the vendor. As a result, after that date we cannot support machines running Windows XP. on campus. The lone exception will be XP machines used to control instruments. In those cases, we can work with departments to find a solution or to place the XP machine on a secure network that is not accessible from outside the campus.

On a first come basis, we will work to support departments that have existing XP machines in use today. In particular, we will prioritize upgrades for any faculty member using an XP machine to have it upgraded to a newer (2-3 year old Windows 7 machine) we have from upgrading our computer labs. For staff or student use, we will work with departments on what is the most effective replacement strategy.

From 8 a.m. to Noon on Monday, December 30th the DoIT staff will be upgrading our OpenAFS file system used to support our Unix environment. The upgrade will involve bringing up new hardware and performing software maintenance on the OpenAFS file system database.  These upgrades should improve system reliability and security.

This will impact the following services:

  • All web services (main campus web servers on www.umbc.edu, parts of myUMBC, userpages.umbc.edu, and the campus wiki.

  • Blackboard, Peoplesoft, Box, VPN, and other systems using the webauth single signonwill be unavailable.

  • All email delivery will be delayed.

  • The GL Unix environment

  • User home directories

  • Software license servers

  • Our mailing lists on lists.umbc.edu

  • New account creation and password changes

We Have Answers! In anticipation of faculty support needs associated with the coming term and Blackboard upgrades,  DoIT will be offering additional weekly drop-in hours beginning Monday, December 9th. A DoIT staff member will be available to work one-on-one with users who show up during the designated times.

Drop-In sessions will focus on one of the many tools we support, including the following:
Given variation in user needs and scheduling, the Drop-In format will be as follows:
  1. Orientation (5 minutes): A quick overview of what the tool does. If all you want is a demo, come early.
  2. Recommendations (10 minutes): 1-2 tips based on our observations from providing faculty support, as well identification of effective practices  and practitioners.
  3. Q & A (40 minutes): This is your time. What do you want to know? What's a problem you'd like to solve or a new opportunity you'd like to explore?
In addition to the F2F sessions, DoIT will also offer virtual drop-in sessions using Blackboard's web-conferencing tool, Collaborate. Any faculty members with Bb questions may participate in these online sessions between 12:00 – 1:00 PM on the appointed date by visiting the following link: www.umbc.edu/go/collaborate

Due to the disruption caused by the upgrade, Winter 2014 Bb courses are now available at bb-winter.umbc.edu. After the WT2014 semester is completed (and the SP2014 semester is started), Winter courses will be migrated to the new production Bb server, typically by the end of Spring Break.

Note: There will be no access to Bb Winter courses via myUMBC. Students and faculty must use bb-winter.umbc.edu to access WT2014 courses.

SP2014 Bb courses have also been created, but will be unavailable during the January 8-10 upgrade (as will Bb communities). After the upgrade, all but WT2014 Bb courses will be available at blackboard.umbc.edu or via myUMBC.
