Division of Information Technology is excited to announce the initial launch of their newly designed Web site, which goes live today, Thursday 24th May 2012 and is located at the web address: http://doit.umbc.edu/

The site’s homepage welcomes you with a clean uncluttered design, and moving images with featured content focused on our mission to provide you with most accurate service information, strengthen support relations and share our knowledge and expertise in the field of information technology.

The new site is divided into three main sections: ABOUT DOIT, SERVICES and SUPPORT. By moving to a more customer-centric layout, we allow you to access information based on your own choice rather than sift through everything to decide what is of interest.

Two videos have been created showing how to connect to the environment for the first time. Please keep in mind that this is still a pilot so there will be some hiccups but that is where we need your help. It seems to work best using Safari (Mac) and IE or Firefox (PC) although recently Chrome has been working, too. To access the system you simply visit virtual.umbc.edu using one of the recommended web browsers. Need Help? During the pilot phase of this solution you can send an email to vde@umbc.edu This will create a ticket and assign it directly to our internal VDE queue in RT. Use the keyword search "Citrix Receiver" to make finding it easier. Once the Citrix receiver app is installed you login to the VDE environment just like you normally would using the Safari browser. When you connect to your machine it will ask if you want to connect using the "Citrix Receiver". It allows faculty to incorporate live, multi-way audio and video, a basic whiteboard with mark-up, application and desktop sharing and other tools for interactivity. It can also be used asynchronously; faculty can narrate a lecture presentation (including Power Point slides), save the recording, and make it available for students to access via Blackboard. Recently Blackboard Collaborate, Inc. provided 4 two-hour training sessions to staff from DoIT, the AOK Library, and CPS. These sessions were recorded and are now available for anyone to view. The first session is an overview of the basic features of Bb Collaborate. The second session includes advanced features appropriate for faculty interested in running synchronous online sessions with their students. The third session covers the use of the software packages Plan! and Publish! Plan! allows faculty to prepare complex Collaborate sessions with many features (such as slides, interactive white board exercises, and quizzes) ahead of time. Publish! is a tool that allows you to download a recorded presentation in several formats including as an .mp4 video file. Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there was an instructor of record listed. The addition of new course sections and instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in SA, and will update hourly. If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Additionally in situations where one instructor is teaching multiple sections of the same course, by default all sections will be combined into one Bb course shell. If you want to have separate shells for different sections, or if you need a shell for for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request or submit an RT ticket with your request. During the power outage there will be no backup cooling available to the Public Policy (PUP) Building data center so a shutdown of the hardware in this location is necessary. Beginning at 4:00pm on Friday, April 27th the PUP data center will be shut down. There are two services that will be unavailable during this time (April 27 4:00pm through Noon, April 30th). All other services will be unaffected. Affected Services: * iStrategy (REX) Finance Only - (Student Will Remain Available) * Peoplesoft Development We anticipate having the PUP data center and all associated services fully restored by noon, April 30th. On a positive note we have a new data center lease agreement with Allegis in UMBC’s research park. DoIT will begin moving many of our production systems currently hosted in the PUP data center to the new data center late this summer.
