UMBC Signs Contract to Deploy Box.com For File Storage

We are living in a world where people work from multiple devices -- phone, laptop, and computer - and need access to their files anywhere and anytime. UMBC’s active directory (AD) system serves the campus well but it doesn’t provide the level of flexibility for mobile devices and off-campus access that people need.

The higher education community, through an initiative by Internet2, has worked with a company named Box.com to provide a service that we believe will meet our needs and is secure. DoIT has signed an agreement to bring the Box.com service to UMBC and we will launch this in late-September once we intergrate our single-signon.

Students, faculty, and staff will be allowed to have web-based storage that they can use their myUMBC login to access. Files can be easily shared with others on campus and off-campus. You can even send a user a “URL” that allows someone that doesn’t have the Box.com service to access the file.

One of the nice features of Box.com is that is has great support for collaboration. It integrates well with Google Docs and we feel that faculty research groups will love the flexibility this provides in sharing data with other members of their research team.

Our plans for launching this service are to do a limited launch in the fall inside DoIT and to faculty and staff that want to be early adopters. We will make this service available to everyone, including students, in the spring. During the spring we will identify departments that need more flexibility for shared file storage than AD provides and transition them over to the Box.com offering.

DoIT Upgrades Campus Data Network

<Tagline>UMBC Deploys State-of-the-Art Data Network.</Tagline>

As part of the Performing Arts building project it was necessary to upgrade our campus data network. We anticipate that PAH will ultimately utilize HD video streaming and we needed to increase network reliability and connectivity. To do that required that we upgrade our ten year old network core.

After a thorough technical evaluation of a number of leading vendors UMBC settled on the CISCO Nexus 7000 routers. The Nexus provides support for a large number of 10 Gigabit (10 billion bits per second) interfaces. These interfaces can be used to hook building or servers together to provide robust services to the campus.

The PAH building will be connected through a 10Gigabit interface so we can provide support for multiple streams of HD video. This network upgrade also allows UMBC to upgrade the connections to other buildings and we are working to do this over the summer and into the fall. As researchers and students continue to expand their use of the Internet resources this gives us the flexibility to expand capacity as needed.

Finally, UMBC and UMB are partnering with UMCP to upgrade our network connection to 10GB between the three research campuses. UMBC has completed our upgrade and we now can expand our network resources to meet growing demands for Internet bandwidth in support of research and teaching.

UMBC Signs Lease with RLTV for Data Center in Research Park

<Tagline>Working to Improve IT Reliability</Tagline>

This past July, DoIT signed a multi-year lease with Allegis to lease 1200 square feet of computer room space in the Retirement Living Building located in the Research Park. Allegis has a Tier 3 data center that has full power and cooling redundancy.

The BWTECH Research Park (RP) data center is a wonderful facility that will greatly enhance our business continuity and support additional research computing capabilities on campus.

Duringthe fall, DoIT will be working to relocate equipment used for critical campus services now in Public Policy to the research park. One benefit to the campus is that the BWTECH facility is on a different power feed than the campus and if power is lost to the campus, we may be able to keep power to the RP data center.

A second benefit is that this RP data center has considerably more cooling capacity and electrical capacity than any of our existing data centers. This provides an opportunity to expand our research computing facilities over the next few years should a large grant opportunity arise.

Finally, as part of improving the campus infrastructure, Physical Plant and Facilities are improving business continuity for the chilled water on campus and this will improve the PUP data center. Once this is done, DoIT will utilize the PuP facility to expand our support for department and research-based computing systems that are now limited due to cooling in the Engineering data center.

DoIT Combines AV Services and Desktop Computing

<Tagline>Move Supports Holistic Approach to Campus IT Infrastructure</Tagline>

On July 1, 2012, Audio Visual (AV) Services began reporting to Enterprise Infrastructure and Support (EIS), a move that reflects a broader need to integrate and coordinate UMBC’s classroom technology infrastructure, not just end user support.

For example, in the past, lecture halls and labs were supported by two different Division of Information Technology (DoIT) groups: AV handled data projectors, audio systems and VHS/DVD components, while Desktop Computing (part of EIS) handled computer hardware, software and networking. With increased demand for “smart classrooms,” and opening of the new Performing Arts & Humanities building this summer, DoIT wanted to take a more holistic approach to infrastructure planning and support. EIS reports to Mike Carlin, Associate Vice President and Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO), who can be reached at 410.455.2578 or mikec@umbc.edu.

The combining of AV Services and Desktop Computing completes a DoIT reorganization that began last summer, when the Technology Support Center (formerly Help Desk) began reporting to Instructional Technology & New Media (ITNM). In addition, the TSC moved to the library to support the Retriever Learning Center, and provide a more visible campus location for initial IT support of students, faculty and staff.

ITNM is co-located with the Faculty Development Center in Engineering 101, and still provides user support for Blackboard, clickers, hybrid learning, Scantron test scoring, and video and web development through the New Media Studio.
