Box.com Has Arrived At UMBC! A new, flexible, high-capacity storage solution for UMBC.

We are living in a world where people work from multiple devices — phone, laptop, and computer – and need access to their files anywhere and anytime. UMBC’s active directory (AD) system serves the campus well but it doesn’t provide the level of flexibility for mobile devices and off-campus access that people need.

The higher education community, through an initiative by Internet2, has worked with a company named Box.com to provide a service that we believe will meet our needs and is secure. Box is an online file sharing system that you can access from multiple devices. Box also allows you to share your files and folders with others easily.

DoIT signed an agreement and launched Box.com in late September, after integrating our single-signon.

Students, faculty, and staff will now be allowed to have web-based storage that they can use their myUMBC login to access. Files can be easily shared with others on campus and off-campus. You can even send a user a “URL” that allows someone that doesn’t have the Box.com service to access the file.

One of the nice features of Box.com is that is has great support for collaboration. It integrates well with Google Docs and we feel that faculty research groups will love the flexibility this provides in sharing data with other members of their research team.

DoIT will be rolling out this service with a limited launch to departments, faculty and staff that want to be early adopters, after which we will make this service available to everyone, including students. 

During the spring we will also identify departments that need more flexibility for shared file storage than AD provides and transition them over to the Box.com offering.

Upon investigation DoIT staff found that one of three Bb application servers had failed, and has subsequently been restarted. Campus users who were logged in to that particular server early Thursday evening (approximately 6:30 - 8 pm) may have experienced either slow loading of pages, or a lack of responsiveness.  Emptying the browser cache and then closing and restarting the browser should solve any issues.  DoIT staff are actively working with Blackboard, Inc. to troubleshoot the cause of the failure.

In order to load all lab and lecture hall PCs with our standard set of software (known as an "image"), all requests for additions or changes for Fall 2013 must be received by Wednesday, May 1. For Spring 2014, the lab & lecture hall software "image" deadline is Tuesday, October 1. All software requests must be made each semester (they do not carry over from semester to semester).
To be added to the lab & lecture hall image, DoIT must have the following:
  • Proof of purchase/licenses
  • Media and software installation instructions
Please submit an RT ticket containing the required information or contact 410.455.3838 and a Technology Support Center (TSC) staff member will assist you. If the request is not received by the deadline, there is no guarantee the requested software will be made available.

For an instructor-only demo of software, please use a laptop. If you don't have a laptop, you can reserve and pick up one at AV Services (020 ENGR Bldg).

If you need software installed on the lab image for a one-time purpose (for example, a 2-day workshop in which all users need access to the software), the request should be submitted no less than six (6) weeks prior to the first lab reservation for that class. The software will be removed once you are done.

An e-mail confirmation of the RT ticket will be sent to the requester once the software is installed, typically 1-2 week(s) before the first use of the software; faculty/instructors need to then test the software to ensure everything is working as expected for class. Support for the software is the responsibility of the instructor or department who requested that the software be installed.

Again, proof of purchase and/or license must be provided for as many copies as will be needed for the students in the class. We cannot install software without appropriate proof of licensing.

Although DoIT will make a reasonable effort to get all software packages to work, we can not guarantee that they will. Some packages may not function because of the network, computer hardware, and lab setup. DoIT cannot be held responsible for software that does not work by class time.

During the past two months there has been an increase in spam to the campus. Analysis of the mail logs has shown that much of this increase can be attributed to mail being sent to and from legacy email domains (see below) that are no longer used.

NOTE: Only the email domains below will be affected by this change. Email sent to username@umbc.edu and previously exempted email domains will remain unaffected.

Legacy Email Domains to Be Discontinued on April 4, 2013

In some situations these legacy email domains may have been published thus making continued delivery important to an individual. If you would like to continue delivery of one or more of these legacy email domains please submit a ticket requesting your email be exempted from the changes going into effect on April 4, 2013.

It is important to note that anyone who has migrated their mail to Google will not experience any disruption during this upgrade.  All of the services listed above will be available for campus use until 10:30am on Wednesday March 20th and will be available again at 11am on Wednesday March 20th once the upgrade has been completed.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Technology Support Center at x53838.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and wish everyone a good spring break.

This downtime will only affect personal web pages that are served out of your personal AFS directory.  

Important Note: Departmental webpages and main campus web pages will NOT be affected.  These will remain online.
