July Technology of the Month Turning Point Clickers

Used by more than 5,000 students, UMBC has standardized its student response system, or “clickers,” on the Turning Technologies  platform. This systems supports instant student feedback to questions posed by faculty in the classroom, which can be integrated into PowerPoint presentations or faculty can asked questions on the fly. The results display of all student responses and allows the instructor to tailor instructor based on what students do (or don’t) understand before moving on to new content. Turning Point  also integrates with Blackboard so that instructors can access participant list of registered users and send grades to the gradebook. Using the clickers is a great way to engage your students and assess their knowledge of course content.

To create a promotion
  1. Go to the post or event you want to promote
  2. Click the Promote button
  3. Follow the instructions to pick the date you want your promotion to run
  4. Done
You can see a list of upcoming promotions on the Promotions tab of your group.

Rules for Promotions

  • Your group can promote a post/event as many times as you want.
  • Your group must have at least 3 days between each promotion.
  • Your group can only have up to 15 upcoming promotions for institutional groups and 5 for student org groups.
  • Your promotion must be relevant to everyone at UMBC: students, faculty, and staff.
  • If you need to promote to a subset of the community, contact the appropriate group.
  • If caught in violation of these rules, you will be warned. Further violations may result in your group losing the ability to promote.
If you have questions about these rules, post them in the comments and we'll do our best to respond.

It's a "soft launch"...
We're launching promotions in production to give folks (and us) a chance to see how they work as people start using them. It is a very difficult thing to test internally because of the community dynamics involved. We will be monitoring them and adjusting the system throughout the summer based on feedback and how well it works.

For over a year, Christian Oyson has worked Tier 1 support for the Technology Support Center (TSC) here at UMBC, providing assistance to students, faculty and staff. Oyson, a senior majoring in Informations Systems with a minor in Computer Science, started out at the TSC in summer 2014 as a student consultant. On a daily basis, the TSC gets a variety of calls ranging from user accounts, computer issues, phones, to internet complications and blackboard assistance. “If it’s anything technology related, we can try to assist you.” says Oyson. 

On average, working at the TSC fluctuates depending on the hour and how many people are on duty. During a regular semester, there are two to three students working at a time and get about ten calls per shift. “Most people that call us do tend to be friendly,” says Oyson “but sometimes we can get calls from people frustrated on their issue and we do what we can to keep them calm while assessing the situation.”

Not all calls lead to a complex solution. Oyson recalls one call he had that was a simple fix involving a user who could not turn on their computer even though everything appeared fine. He had asked them if the computer was plugged in securely to an outlet, to which the user replied that it was plugged into a power strip. Oyson then followed up with his question and asked if the power strip was turned on, something the user did not think of. “The next thing I hear on the phone were happy cheers and sighs of relief.” Oyson said “I guess the saying "Try turning it on and off again" does come in handy.”

Not every call is as easy, and when it is really busy, such as during the first few weeks in the beginning of the semester or during a campus wide situation, the TSC springs into action. Oyson says “If it gets extremely busy, all hands on deck. Depending on how many are on duty, we have a rotation system determining who takes the call, but if things get really busy, then whoever is available has the call.” 

Joining the TSC can be a great opportunity to break into the tech field and boost your communication skills according to Oyson. He mentions that starting out is challenging, but it gets easier as it goes on. “At the TSC, we talk to people from all walks of life: Old and young, tech experts and novices, and people from around the world.” Oyson says “You really don't know who you are talking to until you answer the call. With that said in mind, be ready and familiar with various approaches on how to tackle on a situation.”

Oyson will continue his work at the TSC through the upcoming fall semester. “I plan to continue working this position until I graduate in the spring of 2016 gaining as much knowledge and experience I can in preparation for the IT career ahead of me” Oyson said.

DoIT would like to recognize its own Tom Penniston on the publication of the book chapter “Service Learning and the Acquisition of Social Capital in the Community College Setting.” For this project, Penniston and co-author Amy Pucino conducted interview research to investigate how service-learning participation helps community-college students develop formal and informal relationships and access resources, such as letters of recommendation.

The findings of the research highlight the connections students forge through participation in service-learning. “When students stepped out of their comfort zones, they were able to build and connect with social capital, which may be of special importance to community-college students” (Pucino & Penniston 2014). Penniston, who earned his Ph.D. from UMBC in 2014, believes these experiences support students’ academic and professional success.

The UMBC Directory Search offers a browse by department feature that shows people affiliated with a university department. At times, people may incorrectly appear as part of a department, so it’s important to keep the directory updated as correcting this problem depends on the person’s affiliation with UMBC. 

To navigate to the directory listings page, log in to myUMBC and mouse over your name, on the drop down menu click profile and then navigate to Online/Print Directory Info link at the bottom. If you do not see your department listed, submit a ticket with the UMBC Technology Support Center to have it made available.

Damian Doyle, Director of Enterprise Infrastructure and Support says “The process is quick and easy, it only takes a minute and is intuitive once you are on the page.” Actions such as removing a former employee or updating a job title are quick and easy, and require only a minimum amount of steps. 

“As people are searching for who to contact across campus it can be very frustrating for parents/students and other faculty and staff if information in the directory is inaccurate and leads people on wild goose chases,” says Doyle.

RT 4.2 series has been out for almost 2 years now and has become very stable. Please see press release from BestPractical for more details.

It is hard to find a good time to upgrade and not impact the campus, especially as RT has grown over the years. It is thought that mid-summer is as good a time as it gets to be for as little impact as possible and yet provide sufficient use to verify stability.

I have recorded a 5 minute quick demo of the new version with some references to the current version using a test user. I hope this proves to be beneficial for introducing this new version.

I would like to ask everyone to sign into the development instance (https://rt-dev-new.core.umbc.edu) as yourself and perform some testing. You will be ask to Continue to a website for which the certificate cannot be validated. This is OK for our test setup.

Please remember our test system does not actually send emails but will record them within RT as if they were sent fro review via the SHOW button.

Lastly, I will ask folks to correspond via this group with any questions or concerns so we can get as much input from others as possible.

We have renamed the Active GEP and GFR Classes report to Courses by GEP and GFR Attributes. This report can be accessed by navigating to:
Curriculum Management > Course > Courses by GEP and GFR attributes.
 We have moved the High Deficiency Rate Coursesand LRC101A Analysis reports from the folder Curriculum Management > Course >  to the folder Student Records and Enrollment > Course Enrollment.
We have updated the Course Enrollment report. Now included are the headcount of In-State and Out of State tuition and their credits attempted by In-State and Out of State.  This report can be accessed by navigating to:
Curriculum Management > Course > Course Enrollment.

    • Topics will remain at least through the next year, no need to change links or documentation this time...whew
    • Events was pulled out from the Community menu
    • Community is no longer a menu, it now just shows pawpular, commented, or recent posts from public groups

    • Activity Feed filled with the latest posts from groups you're following. Note: Updates only go back about a month. Once in production you'll see all past updates.
    • Right-Hand Column
      • Outstanding alerts will show prominently at the top of the right-hand column
      • Guide card available for students, but looking for feedback on what might be useful for Faculty and Staff
      • Events from followed groups, attended events, and other upcoming events
      • Featured Groups - to be replaced with new topical groups that are intended to replace Discussions

  • Topics
    • Navigate between topics more easily with list of topics along left side of page
  • Group Pages

  • Subtle Changes
    • Email notifications don't get sent from the beta server. You'll just have to trust us that they work.
    • We removed the ability to set a default role. This was to ensure that you always see content/updates specific to your role at the university. This mostly affects staff who set their default role to student to see what's going on, but would then miss updates targeted at staff. You can still change your role to any other role, under your name.
    • All notification settings you previously had for groups have been set to the default of "Important Only".
  • Mobile
    • Updated mobile start page to match the new layout, note the two tabs: Updates and More
  • Coming Next Week
    • Promotions - sometime next week along with an explanation post
    • Updated daily summary email
    • Prettier notification emails
