The update is necessary to remove QuickTime from the server because it presents security vulnerabilities. TechSmith has rebuilt the Mac recorder, which is now compatible with OS 10.12 Sierra. Please do not submit recordings during the upgrade. Windows users are not required to update their recorder.

Critical items of note:
To update your Mac recorder after the system maintenance, please follow these steps:
  1. Delete the current application from your computer (via Applications)
  2. Navigate to the TechSmith Relay server: https://cam-relay.ad.umbc.edu/relay
  3. Login using your UMBC username and password
  4. Select the Client Downloads tab and download the new Mac recorder

During the Fall 2016 semester, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Overdose Prevention Office worked with MCS television production students at UMBC to interview stakeholders and community advocates about opioid overdose and treatment in Maryland. The series particularly focused the use of naloxone (the life-saving opioid overdose reversal drug). These videos and clips provided an opportunity to tell the stories of those who work on the front lines of the opioid epidemic and save lives with naloxone. 

The videos will be used to educate the public on the tools available to address the opioid epidemic, combat the stigmatization of drug use, and promote the work of the Overdose Prevention Office to expand access to naloxone. Please visit their website at

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Thursday, December 22nd from 5pm to 11pm.  While many systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are several systems which require the downtime of key services for short times during this window.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.

The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates.  The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Thursday, December 22nd.

During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.

The actual upgrade to production is scheduled for the January 6, 2017 weekend starting Friday evening beginning at 5:00 pm.

Here is the link to access the development RT. Please be patient as this is a very small setup so it will be much slower than what you are used to in production.

Also note that there could be a message indication of an invalid certificate. This is due to being in our development area and it is OK to continue.

I am mainly looking to see if you can create tickets, update tickets, etc..

Share your favorite technologies with the UMBC Community

Last year, the Instructional Technology team held UMBC’s first TechFest. TechFest is designed to bring together UMBC students, faculty, and staff to share their favorite technologies with the campus community through workshops and presentations.

The Instructional Technology Team cordially invites any interested groups and/or individuals to propose sessions for TechFest 2017 to demonstrate a favorite instructional technology tool, and share best practices. Last year, session topics included such as Google Calendar, Box, LinkedIn, Microsoft OneNote, and Blackboard.  

There are two types of sessions that will be offered at TechFest 2017:

  • Workshop Session (35 minutes)-Presenter(s) provide a brief overview of the instructional technology and offer information based on best practices and use. Participants are provided with at least three take aways implementing use of the technology.

  • Power Session (70 minutes)-Presenter(s) provide a more in-depth overview of the instructional technology and offer information based on best practices and use. In Power Sessions, participants are given the opportunity to explore the technology through "hands-on" activities.


Deadlines and Notifications

Proposals must be submitted no later than 5pm on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10 by completing this Google Form.  Applicants will be notified about acceptances approximately two weeks after the submission deadline. Selection will be based on how well the proposal connects to the themes, goals, and overall contribution to TechFest.
