myUMBC: Fall 2017 Updates I hope everyone had a great summer. We've made a few changes for this fall, hopefully nothing that trips anyone up.

Cleaned Up Start Page

We made an attempt at making the start page a little less busy. Hopefully it is easier on the eyes. Not a major change but we hope you enjoy it.

We're in the process of reaching out to folks to discuss major changes to how the Start page works. If you have ideas and want to discuss, please let me know.

Featured and Weekend Events

Now on the Events page there are tabs to view upcoming Featured events as well as events happening during the upcoming weekend. Now if someone says "I wonder what's going on this weekend," you'll know.

Guide is the New Topics

Topics was never a great name for the menu, but we couldn't think of anything better at the time. Changing it to Guide aligns with how we will be revisiting the section in future updates to myUMBC.

Faculty and Staff Center Tweaks

We changed the layout of the Faculty and Staff Center to make them in line with the other topic pages. Hopefully the change isn't too dramatic.

Profile: Classes (Beta)

We added a Classes section to the Profile of students. Please take a look and let us know what you think.

During the summer of 2017, DoIT AV Services upgraded eleven classrooms and meeting rooms across campus.  Funding for these room renovations was provided by CNMS, The Commons, and DoIT.  The full list of the rooms upgraded is below.

Some of the highlights of these upgrades are as follows:
  • 80" monitors on stands with Mersive Solstice wireless collaboration devices in two Commons meeting rooms
  • Improved audio, projection, and sight-lines in two Public Policy and two Sondheim classrooms
  • Improved audio and projection in three Sherman Hall a one Meyerhoff room 
In addition to these highlights, the CASTLE was completely renovated from a AV technology standpoint.  The "new" CASTLE features eight larger displays, improved room audio, wireless collaboration, and new instructor controls that allow the instructor to display content or multiple sources of content on one or many displays all through the use of a touch-panel screen.

All of this work (design, installation, configuration, and training) was done in-house by AV Services.  Special kudos to Danielle Brown and Jack Malone.

Friday, 8/18/2017 between 5pm and 9pm (most systems will only be down for a short period during this time): 

  • The web hosting environments (virthost and jabba) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)
  • Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)
    • All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched
    • Expected to be unreachable from 5pm to 7pm
  • All HFS (user) servers will be offline
  • License5 will be down (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)
Saturday, 8/19/2017 between 9am and 11am(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):
  • myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality
  • Wiki will be unavailable
  • The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable

The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates.  The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Thursday, August 17th.

We had an issue yesterday (July 31) in which myUMBC sent duplicate copies of posts to approximately 11,000 students. Some students received up to 10 copies of the same post via myUMBC, email, and push notifications.

We have corrected the problem and after extensive testing we are confident that this will not happen again.

I sincerely apologize for the error. I know you are putting your faith in us to provide solutions and when things like this happen, our credibility takes a hit. I appreciate your understanding as we grow the use of this feature. If you have any questions, please let me know.

DoIT staff worked on the system and we were able to move over to a backup unit and restored all services shortly after 1:00am. 

Any users on the affected mail system may have seen a delay in the delivery of mail, but all messages would have been queued up and delivered once service was restored.

Blackboard course shells for FA2017 were created on July 18, 2017 after the completion of the cloud migration.

Summer 2017 courses will be archived from the separate cloud environment and migrated to the primary Blackboard site in mid-FA2017. Faculty will not need to export their summer content unless they require it for immediate use.

Returning faculty who have not used Blackboard since spring should consider the following before logging into the new cloud environment:

About Course Creation

Bb shells for FA2017 are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. As new course sections and/or instructors are added to the SOC by Department Scheduling Coordinators, corresponding Bb shells are automatically generated overnight. 

Instructors who teach multiple sections of the same course will find those enrollments merged into one Bb course shell. These sections may be split upon request by an RT ticket, which we recommend submitting at least one week before the semester starts, if not as soon as courses are created in Blackboard.

Student enrollment in Bb mirrors the official registration in SA and updates hourly. However, courses are not accessible to students by default until the instructor of record makes them available.

DoIT is pleased to announce the completion of the Blackboard cloud migration.

During the downtime window, Blackboard engineers and DoIt staff migrated nearly 21,000 courses and more than 800 communities to the new cloud infrastructure. Summer courses continue to operate in a separate environment and will be migrated later during the FA2017 semester.

Before logging into the new cloud environment, please consider the following:

DoIT's Technology Support Center will be closed from Saturday, July 1st to Tuesday, July 4th due to the upcoming holiday weekend. The office was already scheduled to be closed on Monday, July 3rd and Tuesday, July 4th for the holiday, and given that the AOK Library is not open on Saturdays during the Summer, it was decided to leave the building closed on Sunday, July 2nd as well.

Per DoIT’s March 8 and April 28 announcements, Blackboard engineers will migrate the primary UMBC Blackboard site (blackboard.umbc.edu) beginning at 12:01 AM on Friday, June 30, 2017, and lasting up to 7 days. Summer 2017 courses are hosted in a separate environment and no disruption is expected.

FYI: Please note that DoIT's Technology Support Center (TSC) will be closed July 1 and reopen on July 5.

The downtime window will allow Blackboard and UMBC to migrate all existing content, files, and database from the current hosting facilities to the new cloud infrastructure. Time is also allocated for DoIT staff to verify third-party integrations and to perform quality assurance testing.
