Improving Your Hybrid/Online Course with Quality Matters
Join our faculty panel to learn and discuss the benefits of using Quality Matters (QM) to review your existing hybrid/online courses and develop a course improvement plan. During this session, we will discuss foundational concepts of Quality Matters, the essential standards, and the concept of alignment.
Teaching with Technology: Support for Accessible Learning
Why does accessibility matter? At this session, you’ll hear from different perspectives about accessibility on our panel featuring disability support experts, media and technology staff, faculty, and students who will share their experiences about supporting accessibility in the hybrid and online classroom.
Stay for hands-on exploration! After the panel, media and instructional technology staff will be available to share a variety of assistive technologies. Learn more about touch-enabled interactive displays, portable document cameras, and more.
What is the future of hybrid & online learning at UMBC?
The University’s recent
strategic plan calls for developing campus-wide policies and standards for the use of technology in instruction, which includes hybrid and online formats. How do we as a community codify and measure our values for hybrid and online learning through policies and standards? How do accreditation and assessment requirements impact hybrid and online learning formats? What future trends might influence the University’s current model of hybrid and online learning? Join our closing roundtable for an active conversation about the future of these alternate delivery formats.
During this week, UMBC faculty, students, and champions of online learning will explore the accomplishments, continued growth, and possibilities for the future. We hope you can join our conversations.

Join USDLA as we take a look back at distance communication & collaboration while reviewing the current state of affairs with some predictions on what is to come.
Wednesday, November 8 - 10 AM - 11 AM EST
- There are many interactive distance learning tools for reading and writing because text editors have long been a mainstay of internet communication. This is not the case for mathematical equations. Until now, remote assessment for algebra has been limited to multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank responses that give teachers little insight into their students’ thought processes. New tools empower teachers to dynamically create, present and manipulate equations before their remote students’ eyes. This technology promises to arm students with advanced procedural fluency for algebraic problem solving while saving teachers hours of time. Analytics from automated problem grading give teachers much richer feedback that form the basis for better differentiated teaching. This session will describe and demonstrate this exciting new development in distance learning for algebra.
Wednesday, November 8 - 1 PM - 2 PM EST
- To ensure the long-term success of an eLearning program (blended, hybrid, fully online), colleges and universities need an eLearning strategic plan for growing online programs sustainably and at scale. An institution must consider and develop its goals, vision, organization, governance, policies and procedures, as well as accessibility planning around eLearning. When these areas are not at the core of the eLearning programming, the institution risks any competitive advantage in the eLearning space. Institutions often jump into developing courses and marketing programs when the campus is not organized efficiently, and the overall program has not been operationalized. Skipping strategic planning can cost the institution unexpected expenses and personnel resources. This webinar will address the components of an eLearning strategic plan and how it is critical to the success of the eLearning program.

3rd Annual TechFest on March 29, 2018
On March 29, 2018, the Instructional Technology team will hold our third annual TechFest. TechFest brings the campus community together and demonstrates ways that technology can both support and improve the efficiency of day-to-day activities.
Students, faculty, and staff are all welcomed and encouraged to attend.
Instructional Technology will be launching our Call for Proposals in early November asking for any student, faculty, or staff member to lead either a Workshop Session, a 35-minute presentation providing a brief overview of the instructional technology tool, or a Power Session, a 70-minute in-depth interactive session that invites participants to actively work with the tool while the presenter(s) provide expert advice.
Past Session topics have included Clickers, Blackboard, iCloud, LinkedIn, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Forms, Microsoft OneNote, Box, CourseArc, Lynda.com, Basecamp, and Screen Captures.

(Registration, light breakfast and poster showcase will begin at 8:00 a.m.)
This day-long Summit will bring together faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and administrators from across Maryland’s higher education institutions to explore the promise of using open educational resources (OER) to replace costly textbooks with affordable, high-quality learning materials while giving instructors the opportunity to repurpose content to meet their students’ needs.
The Summit is open to all 2- and 4-year Maryland higher education institutions and welcomes attendees at all levels of OER experience. Join OER leaders to:
- Explore freely available open source materials;
- Learn about the impact on student cost-savings, access, and success;
- Participate in hands-on workshops to gain new tools for curating, developing, and licensing OER;
- Discuss accessibility and quality issues; and
- Develop strategies to support your institution’s efforts to scale up the use of OER.
Institutions are encouraged to bring teams of 4-5 members, including faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and administrators, to collaborate in the interactive discussions and workshops.
The deadline for registration is November 22, 2017. However, spots for the Summit are limited and filling up quickly.

Eduroam Update Message
An eduroam wifi network update requires your attention.
There was an update this morning to the eduroam wireless network that will prompt users to retrust a certificate from our servers. This update was required due to the existing certificate expiring. This is a legitimate update; detailed instructions for connecting to eduroam can be found here

Apple iPhones/iPads: Some iOS versions may require you to forget the eduroam network and re-add it. Otherwise, you will be prompted to trust the new certificate, and reenter your @umbc.edu username and password.
MacOS/OS X: You will be prompted to trust the new certificate, and enter your local computer account password to make the change. You may be prompted to reenter your @umbc.edu account information, depending on OS version.
In our testing, Android devices that were previously connected to eduroam are unaffected by the update.

'Student Group Roster' report now available
Student Group Administrators
A new report "Student Group Roster" has been published that allows student group administrators to see the list of students in their group by Term. Displays Name, Empid, CampusID, Career and Enrollment Status of the term.
The report can be accessed by going to

Guided Reports', and then navigating to
Student Records and Enrollment > Student Enrollment > Details >In response to residential student feedback, we recently partnered with the Office of Residential Life and updated all residential buildings with wireless hardware upgrades that provide the fastest speeds available. However, with innovation and new hardware can come unexpected challenges. RT tickets from residential students helped us identify a system-wide issue that may impact your user experience.
DoIT has identified a software bug in the residential wireless system. The bug can cause devices to connect to access points further away a student’s room they necessary, resulting in slower, less consistent speeds and occasional disconnects from the wireless network. This problem is present on Eduroam and on Visitor and Campus wireless and it's an issue on the devices themselves, not just a single wireless network.
Please note that we do not believe this problem is present in the academic areas of the campus, only in the Residence Halls.
We have been working with the vendor, Cisco, to get a version of software that fixes the bug and they are currently vetting a patch through their testing lab. In the meantime, we have worked with Cisco to develop an interim solution to minimize the impact on you. This interim solution involves monitoring the system for certain error logs caused by this bug, and resetting the access points as needed. We apologize for the inconvenience and, as soon as the new software is available, we will be applying it throughout the Residence Halls immediately.

9-21-2017 DocuSign Update
This evening DoIT worked with DocuSign technical staff to upgrade our system to new accounts to allow full use of the latest version called ‘New Experience’. This was a fairly labor intensive activity which had some unintended emails sent upon account migration.
The intent was that the migration would be fairly seamless to our community however the silent creation feature for our users in the new account did not occur as anticipated and previous users of the old DocuSign account received an email requesting an Account Activation upon completion of the migration.
I apologize for this confusion and will be glad to handle any questions you may have.
Below is an example of the email you will receive.
Please select the yellow Activate button. The old account will be closed and no longer available to you. All documents have been transferred to the new account and DoIT will retain the old account for reference.

Quality Matters Regional Conference Call for Proposals
Share your ideas & best practices with the QM community
The Quality Matters Regional Conference East is currently accepting proposals for its spring conference, which will be held at Towson University on March 22-23, 2018.
The conference theme is Managing Quality at Scale. Themes include:
- collaborating between faculty and instructional designers
- achieving quality assurance, leveraging resources, building buy-in, and engaging faculty and academic leaders
- addressing accessibility, usability, or Universal Design for Learning
- showcasing course design showcases
- discussing alternative teaching strategies such as competency-based education and gamification
- using tools such as learner analytics, digital badging, and open educational resources in support of student success
Two presentation formats are available: 25- and 50-minute sessions. The conference committee encourages interactive sessions and collaborations between multiple institutions.
Submissions are due by November 22, 2017.

DocuSign Maintenance
DocuSign will be down from 5:00pm and 10:00pm this Thursday!
This week, on Thursday evening between 5:00pm-10:00p, there will be maintenance work for UMBC's DocuSign solution.
As part of the maintenance, new accounts will be provisioned to allow for migration from the DocuSign 'Classic' version to their newest version know as the 'New Experience'.
DocuSign has assured us that all documents will be moved and all access will remain the same. During this process, current accounts will be closed and the new accounts will be automatically provisioned.
This is being done to remedy an issue created in the Classic version of DocuSign that does not work in the New Experience version.
While we anticipate a smooth transition we will ask that you submit an
RT ticket in the event that you have any questions or issues.
Please plan to be unable to access DocuSign during the aforementioned time range, and thank you all for your patience!
