Spear Phishing Attacks On The Rise

<Tagline>Community members being targeted for gift card scams</Tagline>

The DoIT Security Group has received reports of a phishing scam targeting the UMBC community. Please be aware that hackers are sending these email messages to students, faculty, and staff.

The phishing email contents are similar to the following:

---------------------------------------------------------------
    Subject: On Campus and Available?
    To:
Are you available?I need you to handle something for
me Now, i'm currently in a meeting with the International
Advisory Committee (IAC) with limited phone call
( phone got broken) and also experiencing some
difficulties at the moment, just reply to my e-mail as
soon as you get this. Are you available?

    Best Regards

    (Academic Department Chair)
    University of Maryland Baltimore County
    1000 Hilltop Circle
    Baltimore, MD 21250

Sent from my iPad, please excuse any typos or
    strange auto-corrections”
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

There are many characteristics that raise suspicions that this is a phishing email; for example, the vague nature of the email content and poor grammar are red flags. Also, the unrelated nature of the email should be an initial giveaway.

However, the biggest concern is the hacker posing as a trusted entity. In this email, they use a specific form of phishing known as spear phishing to target specific members of the UMBC community. Attackers often gather information about organizations in order to make their phishing scams more personal and believable. Here, the hacker impersonates a number of UMBC personnel in order to target staff within the corresponding departments from the impersonated individuals.

The best defense against spear phishing is vigilance. If you receive this email, please be aware of its malicious nature and do NOT reply to it. Replying to this email could further engage the hacker in hopes that you’ll reveal sensitive information that could compromise your online and physical safety.

If you receive this email or one with related content, please forward it to security@umbc.edu with full headers (directions can be found here: https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=1867970) and delete the email immediately. If you feel your information or safety has been violated in any way, you are also encouraged to call UMBC Police at (410) 455-5555.

For more information regarding phishing and spam FAQs, please see the PHISHING/SPAM FAQS section of itsecurity.umbc.edu.

New group enhancements scheduled for December Ultra update

<Tagline>Ungraded assignments also coming this month</Tagline>

Managing large numbers of students and groups is an important tool in Blackboard. In the current version of Ultra, faculty had to create assignments and discussions before they could create and attach a group to the graded activity. With the December update, the Groups Set tool is enhanced to allow faculty to create groups before attaching them to assignments.

An additional enhancement to the groups tool will also allow faculty to assign students to a group if they are not already in one or move a student to a different group. This setting addresses an important need when students join a class after a group activity has started or if they do not join a self-enrolled group by an appointed deadline.

Note: Group Sets still do not have a bulk student enrollment option.
About Course Creation

Bb shells for WT2020 and SP2020 are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. As new course sections and/or instructors are added to the SOC by Department Scheduling Coordinators, corresponding Bb shells are automatically generated overnight.

If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your Departmental Scheduling Coordinator to resolve the issue. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.

If you and your Department Scheduling Coordinator believe you are correctly assigned as the instructor of record in the SOC and you do not see your course shell in Blackboard, please submit a Request Tracker (RT) ticket via my.umbc.edu/help.

If you need a Bb shell for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request.

Instructors who teach multiple sections of the same course will find those enrollments merged into one Bb course shell. These sections may be split upon request by an RT ticket, which we recommend submitting at least one week before the semester starts, if not as soon as courses are created in Blackboard.

Student enrollment in Bb mirrors the official registration in SA and updates hourly. However, courses are not accessible to students by default until the instructor of record makes them available.

DoIT Adjusts Support of Bb Ultra Rollout

<Tagline>All faculty still decide when to migrate before FA21</Tagline>

Based on new analysis of how Blackboard (Bb) Ultra has been adopted across campus, DoIT has decided to modify its approach to faculty support across colleges.

Specifically, DoIT will focus on supporting the College of Engineering and IT (CoEIT) in Spring 2020, and the College of Natural, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (CNMS) in Fall 2020. In addition, the rollout period for all colleges and focus areas will extend across two terms (not one, as previously announced). There are no changes in DoIT support focusing on the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) in Spring 2021. Also, DoIT still plans to discontinue support of Blackboard Classic prior to Fall 2021.
To be clear, this change is solely focused on how DoIT organizes its own support of faculty, who still make the final decision of when to switch to Bb Ultra. However, DoIT still recommends all faculty check their Ultra Course Preview and/or Sandbox well before doing so.

Why DoIT is Adjusting its Support Approach

Basically, we've learned some things we didn't know on April 4 when we first announced the phased rollout by college. Specifically, CAHSS has adopted Ultra far more than any other college (61% of all 270 Ultra courses to date), which was not expected since we slated it to go last because it typically has the greatest number of courses (about 850 per term). Also, CNMS, which typically has the fewest Bb courses (about 150 per term), actually has the highest amount of student usage based on average logins, interactions and duration per student across all courses. Reflecting on both facts, we thought it best to adapt how DoIT supports all faculty moving to Ultra.
To stay current on the latest Ultra developments, including what’s new or recently released functionality, visit umbc.edu/go/ultra.

Why CNMS Student Bb Use is So High

<Tagline>Use of Assessments is Key -- and Informs Ultra Rollout</Tagline>

When DoIT announced the phased rollout of Blackboard (Bb) Ultra on April 4 of this year, we did so based on the number of courses typically using Bb in each college as of Spring 2019, starting with least to greatest, to afford more time to colleges using Bb the most. To date, 270 courses have moved to Bb Ultra in Fall 2019, nearly doubling the 147 who did so in Spring 2019.

However, of the 270 Fall 2019 Ultra courses, 61% are from the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS), which was not expected, followed by 11% from the College of Engineering & Information Technology (CoEIT), and 3% from CNMS. The Division of Professional Studies (DPS), Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs (DUAA), Erickson School and Social Work collectively represent 65 courses (24.5%), which was DoIT’s priority focus for Fall 2019.
Interestingly, while CNMS typically has fewer courses than any other college each term, average student use of Bb (e.g., logins, interactions, duration, etc.) is typically much higher than any other college.* DoIT has determined this is due to relatively more CNMS courses using assessments, which research by UMBC and others has shown is related to higher student use of a learning management system (LMS) generally.

As such, given how the campus has typically used Blackboard in the past -- and particularly in CNMS -- DoIT decided to focus more on courses that suggest they are ready for Ultra next term. We think that means some high-enrollment courses making heavy use of groups and assessments might be better suited staying with the traditional Blackboard classic for another term. Currently, there are relatively fewer such courses in CoEIT than CNMS, so DoIT has adjusted its Ultra support approach accordingly.

At the same time, we recognize some courses in any college may have similar usage profiles, which is why DoIT will also be notifying any instructors of such courses of our findings and recommendation prior to Winter & Spring 2020 courses being created after Thanksgiving.

Finally, we have shared our findings & recommendations with Blackboard’s Ultra Development team, which was here on campus last spring to meet with UMBC’s Ultra faculty and ambassadors, and continues to monitor UMBC’s experience as an early adopter and valued client institution. We are also conducting a survey of students in current Fall 2019 Bb Ultra courses (results to be shared at the end of the term).

Slurm Slow to Respond on Taki

Good morning,

We are aware that slurm commands such as squeue and sacct are running slowly or even timing-out this morning. We are investigating the issue. Slurm documentation seems to indicate that this may be due to a large number of concurrent jobs in addition to frequent queries to the slurm database.

Running jobs seem to be unaffected by this issue. Though some may need to be cancelled to resolve the apparent load on slurm.

I will follow up by editing this post with the resolution.

----------------------

Update #1

I can confirm that the issue is a high number of jobs (near 50K, total) pending in the slurm queue. This generated a high load for the database when queries were made such that the remote calls over the network (from any node to the management node) timed-out before they could be completed.

----------------------

Update #2

By increasing the time the network considers for a 'time-out' I was able to finally gather information from the slurm database and administratively cancel a few tens of thousands of jobs. I am working now with slurm support to determine the best way to limit the total number of jobs on the queue. This will mean that future sbatch submissions will generate errors when attempting to submit a number of jobs that would put the slurm queue above the limit. This is preferable to squeue being unavailable to all users due to high load.

Happy Monday!

Roy Prouty

HPC System Administrator

Research Computing Specialist, UMBC DoIT

Office: (410) 455-6351
