Basic Journals Arrive to Ultra Courses in June

<Tagline>Tweaks include assessment feedback, course copy improvements</Tagline>

Starting in early June, instructors can create a journal assignment on the Ultra Course Content page, add journals to learning modules, and use conditional availability to control access based on date or performance. Students and instructors can discuss the journal entry in comments.

Ultra Journal assignments can be ungraded or graded. PLEASE NOTE: The initial release includes a very basic grading workflow, where instructors enter grades manually in the gradebook. Although a rubric can be attached to a graded journal assignment, the first phase of the journal tool does not yet support grading with the rubric. Full grading functionality and support for course copy and conversion are expected later this year. <Tagline>Blackboard FA2020 Course Development Shells Available</Tagline>

In response to some faculty requests, DoIT’s Instructional Technology team will create Fall 2020 Course Development shells for all courses listed in the Schedule of Classes by close of business on Friday, May 29. The Course Development shells will be accessible in Blackboard by close of business on Monday, June 1. These can be copied into Fall 20 production course shells (with auto enrollment of students) beginning July 27.

About Course Development shells:

The purpose of Course Development shells is to provide a space for instructors to fully design their Blackboard course earlier than usual.

However, these development shells will not be auto-enrolled with students.

Important: These shells are for development purposes only, and instructors will need to copy the developed course into their actual course shell.

Create course content, add assignments, upload syllabi - a Course Development shell acts as a staging site for your future production shell.

When production shells are created, instructors can seamlessly copy everything from the Course Development shell into the production shell.

Q: How do I convert my Fall 2020 Course Development shell to the Ultra Course View?

The Fall 2020 Course Development shell will be deployed by default in Blackboard Original.

To convert your Fall 2020 Course Development shell to the Ultra Course View, please follow these steps.

Please note: instructors are not required to use the Ultra Course View at this time. Faculty should take several considerations into account before switching to Ultra for Fall 2020.

Q: Where can I find my Fall 2020 Course Development shell(s)?

From Blackboard, click on Courses in the base navigation. Next, locate "Current Courses" Click on this filter and change it to "Fall Course Development."

Your courses will be named “SUBJ 123 Course Development” (e.g., ENGL 100).

Q: When will FA2020 production shells be created?

Fall semester shells are usually created in late July or early August, per our guidelines. Our goal will be to have production shells deployed no later than July 27.

Q: Should I enroll students in my development shell(s)?

No. Student enrollments will be processed automatically in the production shell when they are created. The purpose of development shells is to provide a space for instructors to fully design their Blackboard course earlier than usual. To avoid confusion for instructors and students, please do not enroll any other user other than instructors or other course designers into your development shells.

Q: How do I get a dev shell if my course was added to the Schedule of Classes after May 29?

Please submit a ticket that includes the course name, course number, and instructor.

Q: How do I copy my FA2020 Course Development shell into my production shell?

Follow the steps outlined in this FAQ.

Q: I'm teaching multiple sections of a course. Can I split my Course Development shell?

No. Instructional Technology will not be accepting requests to split Course Development shells.

However, when production shells are created, you may request to have that shell split. In that case, you will be able to copy your Fall 2020 Course Development shell to each split shell.

Q: I'm teaching multiple sections of a course that are cross-listed. Can I merge my course development shell?

No. Instructional Technology will not be accepting requests to merge Course Development shells.
Work From Home Scam

During the COVID-19, unemployment numbers have been rising and more people are looking for work. Some people have unknowingly gotten involved in breaking the law. According to the article from Idaho News 6 linked below, police found thousands of dollars worth of stolen merchandise in a garage belonging to a homeowner who thought he was renting space to people working on a reshipping job.

The article warns that malicious actors post legitimate looking “work from home” help wanted or job openings on places like social media, message boards and even job posting sites. These ads will claim the work will be easy, pays big, and can be done from home. The malicious actor uses stolen credit cards to purchase goods and has the victim reship the items. In fact, the malicious actor is using the victim as part of a money laundering operation.

The article encourages readers to stay safe while job searching, to make sure that the employer has a readily available phone number for human resources, and has a company website. Scammers on the other hand usually will communicate through email or messenger only and are very secretive about the work, their business, and what the employee will be doing. The article also warns against paying upfront fees since malicious actors will often ask for fees for background checks or other pre-employment checks.

For more information, please check out:

https://www.kivitv.com/news/bbb-watch-for-work-from-home-scams

Maryland COVID-19 Contact Tracing

<Tagline>Make sure you know who you’re talking to</Tagline>

May 22, 2020

Next Week, Maryland will begin a state-wide effort to trace
the spread of COVID-19. The effort will
involve health workers making phone calls to Maryland residents. This is a very important step in identifying
potential disease clusters and everyone’s help is needed.

At the same time, Maryland in general and UMBC in particular
have been targets of a wide variety of scams taking advantage of people’s fears
and uncertainties around this disease. It
is very possible that unscrupulous people will take advantage of Maryland’s
effort as a cover for phone scams. North Carolina, for instance, started a contact tracing effort last
month and has gotten reports of scammers pretending to be health officials and gathering
    information from residents.

Phone Calls

When you get a call, your caller ID should read “MD COVID”. You will be asked about your health and about
your location and interactions within a period of time. You will be asked for your birth date, contact
information, and information about any COVID-19 test if you have had one. You will get guidance about potential symptoms
to watch for and about self-isolation.

You will NOT be asked for:

·
    a Social Security number

·
    financial or bank account
    information

·
    personal details unrelated to
    COVID-19

·
    photographs or videos

·
    passwords

·
    payment

If anyone asks you for this or other information having nothing
to do with COVID-19, please do not give it to them.

Text Messaging

So far, Maryland has not announced that text messaging will
be part of the contact tracing effort.
If you receive a text message that asks you to click on a link for
contact tracing, do not click it. At best, it will take you to a
scam questionnaire requesting your personal information. Worse, it could download malware to your
phone and start harvesting personal information itself.

New Jersey has received reports of text messages pretending
to be from contact tracers and telling people that they have already had
contact with a potential COVID-19 carrier.
These messages also contain links which will lead to information theft
    and/or malware. Contact tracers don’t
    work like this.

We encourage the UMBC community to support this important effort to identify and understand the spread of COVID-19. We also ask you to remain alert to those who try create and exploit fears and confusion for their personal gain.

For More Information
