OER Workshop Series
We are excited to offer you the opportunity to register for an upcoming series of webinars on high-demand topics in OER, hosted by the Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative in partnership with the Rebus Community and facilitated by Apurva Ashok, Project Lead for the Rebus Community and facilitator of the Textbook Success Program.

These webinars are designed to help you explore topics such as developing ancillary materials, diversity, equity and OER, accessibility, and more. There is a limit on attendees for each webinar, so please register early!

First up…

OER Ancillary Materials
Wednesday, December 9, 2020 | 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
The term "Open Educational Resources (OER)" refers to not only high-quality textbooks, but also a number of additional teaching and learning aids called ancillary materials. Ancillary materials include presentations, quizzes, multimedia, interactive simulations, writing prompts, and more. In this session, we'll conduct an overview of different types of ancillary materials, where you can find them, and survey different platforms for delivery. We'll also cover how ancillary materials can be integrated with your textbook or used to align your content to course outcomes.
REGISTER

Coming Soon…

OER Publishing with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Core
Friday, January 22, 2021 | 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
In this session, we'll discuss how Rebus' open publishing differs from traditional models by keeping diversity, equity, and inclusion in mind throughout the production cycle. Working with the principles of DEI is critical to creating valuable resources, and can have impacts beyond improving the quality of the OER. We'll highlight how creators in Maryland have adopted this approach in their projects.
REGISTER

OER and Accessibility
Monday, February 8, 2021 | 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
One of the major goals of the open education movement is to ensure that learning materials are available and usable widely. Accessibility can be a barrier to widespread OER use and adoption, and is often an afterthought to many textbook publishers. In this session we'll explain what we mean by accessibility, remediation, and the work this entails. We'll provide a set of small but simple ways for you to ensure that your learning materials meet accessibility standards.
REGISTER

Creating OER with Students
Wednesday, March 10, 2021 | 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Student voices need to be central in OER projects, especially considering that they are the final users of these materials. In this session, we will showcase a range of OER that have been co-created with students. We will consider the following questions: Where can students join the publishing process?
Job Scams Continue To Target UMBC Community

<Tagline>Scammers Don’t Take Time Off For The Holidays</Tagline>

UMBC’s Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is seeing an increase in the number of job scams targeting the UMBC community. It is not uncommon for scammers to take advantage of people during busy or stressful times, and this holiday season is certainly no exception. People under COVID-19 restrictions may feel isolated and disoriented. The economic impact of the restrictions means that many people are short of money. All of these factors bring out those who will exploit the situation in order to take advantage of others.

How It Works

Not all job scams are identical, but those we have seen follow the general pattern described here.

You may see scams arrive as text messages, email, or in almost any other form possible. The messages are all similar. You are told that the sender has some association with your school and that you have been selected to apply for a work-from-home position. You are asked to contact the sender and/or go to a website to provide personal information, including name, address, phone number, email address, and possibly Social Security Number. Some scammers go to considerable effort to appear legitimate. They may have set up a website. They may even use the names of real people from real companies. One very through scam earlier this year took names and photos from the website of a real company and used it to set up their own website.

Once you have accepted the position, you will be provided with either a check or a picture of a check to print out and be directed to deposit it into your checking account. At the same time, for whatever reason, you will be told to transfer some of your own money (check, wire transfer, etc.) to someone else. For instance, if the check you get is for $1000.00, you may be told to deposit it and immediately send $700.00 to someone else, keeping the remaining $300.00 as your payment for the work. The check for $1000.00 turns out to be a fake and is rejected by your bank. You have just lost$700.00. The scammer you have been working for will stop responding. Any contact information you have will no longer be valid.

Some Examples

Text message

E-mail message

<colgroup></colgroup>

From: Kaitlyn pederio <kaitlynpe541@gmail.com>

Date: Wed, Nov 25, 2020 at 3:02 PM

Subject: CORNERSTONE STUDENT PART TIME JOB OFFER

To:

Dear student,

We got your contact through your school database and I'm happy to inform you that our reputable company Cornerstone® is currently running a student empowerment program.
Consider Open Educational Resources (OER) for Spring

<Tagline>An invitation from USM Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation</Tagline>

As the fall semester winds down and you begin turning your attention to spring 2021, I would like to encourage you to think about adopting Open Educational Resources (OER) for your spring course(s).

The COVID-19 pandemic has created greater urgency for high quality, customizable digital instructional materials that are free or low cost to students. OER has four advantages over traditionally copyrighted instructional materials in the current moment:

Online friendly. Almost all OER is digital and designed to be accessed via technology rather than on paper. Much OER comes in a format that is compatible with the most commonly used learning management systems.(1)

Adaptable. In contrast to traditional textbooks, which are locked by copyright, OER can be customized by instructors as they adapt their courses to remote instruction.

Accessible forever. Given the economic impact and potentially long duration of COVID-19, students are more likely than ever to take extended periods to complete their degree paths. Being able to reference materials from prerequisite courses months or years later will help them persist. Unlike commercial access codes that expire at the end of a semester, students can retain OER permanently.

A good investment. Budgets are tight right now for both students and institutions. OER adoption is one of the few interventions that can both save students money and generate additional revenue for institutions. Faculty use of OER has saved college students nearly one billion dollars in textbook costs in the U.S. and Canada as of 2018.(2) New research shows that there is also a positive financial return on investment for institutions that adopt OER, as students who save money on texts often take additional credits in a given semester.(3)

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative has created several resources to make it easier for you to explore OER options for your course:

M.O.S.T.
GO Chat Recap: The Future of Online Learning at UMBC

<Tagline>Here's what you missed from our Go Online Chat!</Tagline>

Recognizing that the pandemic is not the only disruption that faculty and students encounter, everyone is looking for consistency and flexibility.

Inside Higher Ed, Moving into the Long Term. By the end of Spring 2021 most students will have spent an entire year learning online, and they continue to crave spaces to build relationships with each other and their instructors.

Inside Higher Ed, 4 Reasons Why Every Course Should Be Designed as an Online Course. While face-to-face teaching is likely to still be a part of the future, the principles of online course design can (and some say should) remain in place. The principles of course design that offer students resiliency and extensibility are true for all courses, regardless of modality.

UMBC's online presence has shifted greatly this year, as Beth started our conversation. Fifteen years ago, a partnership between the Division of Information Technology, the Faculty Development Center, and the Office of Summer, Winter, & Special Programs launched the Alternate Delivery Program (ADP). This program leverages the Quality Matters framework to support summer and winter session faculty who redesign face-to-face courses for online or hybrid delivery. While students are still interested in face-to-face courses, there has been a steady increase in online course offerings during Winter and Summer sessions, and a steady decrease in face-to-face course offerings during the same terms.

Reflecting on initiatives from this semester, Yvette offered exciting results from the newly established Finish Line program that encourages former UMBC students, who left prior to COVID, to return and complete their degree by re-enrolling in online courses. More than 120 students targeted for the campaign did just that in Fall 2020. Several Finish Line participants shared that online learning suited their own personal learning style or offered more flexibility in their schedules to take classes and get one step closer to completing a degree.

Check out the full GO Chat here.

Our next GO Chat takes place on Friday, December 4, and will be our final GO Chat for 2020!
Students praise organized course designs from PIVOT+ faculty

About 90% agreed or strongly agreed that requirements for the course were clear while 83% agreed or strongly agreed that instructions for assignments were clear. Grounded in Quality Matters principles, the PIVOT+ program focused on consistent course organization, clear information, and appropriate tools for online learning. “All of the information is in one place,” said one student, “and I never feel confused about what’s going on.”

Presentation delivered to the Faculty Senate Computer Policy Committee (11.3.2020)

Despite praise for course organization, students raised concern over “course and a half” syndrome, which is an overload of content and activities (Kaleta, Skibba, & Joosten, 2007). This feedback presented in both course design and pedagogy. With course design, students reported an overload of content, which made it difficult at times to find what they needed to read or complete weekly activities. Pedagogical overload occurred when too many graded activities occurred too quickly. Students felt like their instructors did not realize they were taking multiple online courses with rapidly approaching, frequently accumulating deadlines.

Additional observations:

The FA2020 semester saw a huge increase in Ultra adoption: More than 40% of UMBC Blackboard courses are using Ultra now. The PIVOT+ courses were no exception. Nearly 52% of PIVOT+ student survey responses said their courses used Ultra compared to 43% of courses still in Original. “Blackboard Ultra is amazing,” said one student, “ and every class should use it.”

Bb Collaborate (59%) supports synchronous engagement more often in PIVOT+ courses compared to Webex (17%). The PIVOT+ program utilized Collaborate for all live engagement with participants, faculty mentors, and staff support.

PIVOT+ courses also leveraged other tools including the Google suite, Microsoft Office, and YouTube. These tools were mentioned often by student survey responses.

For most students completing the survey, the PIVOT+ course was not their first hybrid or online course experience. Moreover, more than 88% of students are accessing their courses from home and most students indicated they did not use the native Blackboard mobile app to access their courses. Overall, mobile usage for myUMBC is down 51% compared to last fall. This was expected since COVID-19 safety measures rapidly shifted the spring semester to remote instruction and summer/fall continued these restrictions to maintain physical distancing.

About the survey

About 247 faculty completed the PIVOT+ program. Only five faculty opted out of the survey and six were not teaching this semester. Of nearly 13,000 survey links distributed to students, about one-third were completed, representing 88% of the PIVOT+ courses. More than 1,000 comments were left about tools used by faculty and an additional 857 comments provided on course design.

A survey link represented one student in one PIVOT+ course. Therefore, if a student was taking two PIVOT+ courses taught by separate faculty who completed the program, the student would receive two separate survey links to represent each separate course design. The surveys were distributed to participants based on course enrollment and role (student) using Blackboard’s native Enterprise Survey tool.

As always, if you have any questions about teaching, learning and technology at UMBC, please consider the following options:

PIVOT | Academic Continuity | Keep On Teaching | Student Technology Resources

Check our extensive FAQ collection

What’s new in Ultra? | Known Issues

Open a ticket via RT

Follow the Instructional Technology & DoIT myUMBC groups

Request a consult with instructional technology staff

Reference

Kaleta, R., Skibba, K., & Joosten, T.
Upcoming VoiceThread Assignment Streamlines Functionality

<Tagline>Improved grading & submission processes</Tagline>

A new interface for the VoiceThread (VT) assignment tool will be available at the end of FA2020. The redesign is a complete overhaul of the entire assignment experience and provides new features with streamlined workflows to guide users through the process. Clear, dynamic checklist requirements, published due dates, grading requirements, and submission status are all new features of the new VoiceThread assignment tool.

In addition to determining the playback and sharing settings for all VT assignments, instructors will automatically have edit access to student-created VoiceThread submissions. A new setting will lock student submissions to prevent changes unless you allow resubmissions. The Student Gallery provides students with a central area to see all VoiceThreads for a single assignment, allowing them to view and comment on their peers’ submissions.

Faculty can set start dates and due dates for VT assignments, which hide activities before you are ready for students to see them. New grading features are also available. Instructors can check the status of student submissions as unattempted, in progress, or submitted. In addition to the current percentage-based schema, VT assignments will support pass/fail submissions. However, if you want to use the new system, you must recreate the assignment.

NOTE: Group assignments will continue to be more complicated, but VoiceThread is developing a simplified and streamlined logic for this functionality.
