Outcomes Report of NSF MRI Grant Posted

<Tagline>Report provides visual highlights of work using taki</Tagline>

Dear Researchers, Colleagues, and Students,

In 2017, a group of 51 UMBC researchers was successful in competing for an MRI (Major Research Infrastructure) grant from the NSF. Having this many faculty -- by my estimate one eighth of all UMBC research/teaching faculty! -- is a powerful signal of the importance of HPCF to the campus and well-appreciated by the NSF program directors. This was in fact the third successful MRI for HPCF, after 2008 and 2012, which in total provided over $1M in funding from the NSF to this campus initiative.

The support of $789,076 financed the extension and update of HPCF with the 2018 equipment, comprising 44 CPU nodes with two 18-core Intel Skylake CPUs and 384 GB of memory each, one node with four NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs connected by NVLink, and 8 Big Data nodes with 48 TB disks across 12 hard drives each. The total includes $236,723 cost-sharing funded by UMBC, and we acknowledge this excellent cooperation, in particular with DoIT.

The 3-year grant has formally ended, and an Outcomes Report provides a two-page highlighted summary of the achievements during the funding period. A PDF file of this report from 2020 is now posted on the HPCF webpage under the Research tab, adding to the corresponding report from 2015. I thank the colleagues Daniel Lobo, Curtis Menyuk, Jerimy Polf, Jianwu Wang, Meilin Yu, and Zhibo Zhang for providing the visuals and project information in the Outcomes Report. It represents a wonderful cross-section of the activity using taki.

Matthias Gobbert, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, gobbert@umbc.edu

(Chair of the HPCF Governance Committee and PI of the MRI grants)

HPCF Usage Stats Posted

<Tagline>Taki usage is analyzed by PI groups and architecture</Tagline>

Dear Researchers, Colleagues, and Students,

User support in collaboration with system administrators have developed visual representation of monthly usage levels of taki's CPU and GPU clusters. You can find this data at hpcf.umbc.edu under the Research tab, where it will be updated every month.

The raw data are in units of core-hours for the CPU cluster and GPU-hours for the GPU cluster, separated by architecture denoted by the year of acquisition. Stacked bar charts add up to the total available hours, while bar charts and line plots show the percentage of use on each architecture. Analysis by most active PI groups are shown in various styles including line graphs.

The visuals show that decommissioning the 2009 CPU nodes in October did not change the usage levels. They also show that usage levels saw a very precipitous drop after spring break 2020 and that research productivity has recovered fully since then. This goes along with continued increase in use of the 2018 hardware in the CPU cluster. The analysis of most active PI groups indicates shifts over time and brings out that most groups use either the CPU or the GPU cluster.

As regular reminder, please send me references to publications! We can also post other newsworthy stories here, so feel free to contact me.

Matthias Gobbert, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, gobbert@umbc.edu

(Chair of the HPCF Governance Committee and PI of the MRI grants)

Ultra enhances test feedback & journal grading for winter

<Tagline>Create HTML content & provide activity logs to support</Tagline>

Four exciting updates come to Ultra for winter courses. Grading enhancements for journals, test feedback release settings, an updated content editor, and support for HTML content are new features for Ultra courses.

Journals - Instructors can clearly see when students post new journals and comments, and can view a single submission. Instructors can also use Ultra’s grading tools, including feedback and rubrics, to create and post grades. Both participation and submission views link to the gradebook. By default, students will be allowed to delete and edit their journal entries and comments, but instructors can also now choose to disable this permission.

Tests - Instructors can enable more granular controls on when and what type of feedback is given to students when taking an assessment. Set up timed release to automated question feedback, correct answers, and question scores. Select when to show feedback: after submission, after due date, at a specific date, or after the assessment is graded. Students will see if and when feedback will be available for a specific assessment after they submit an attempt.

Gradebook - In the Student List View, instructors will receive additional search capabilities, column sorting options, and enhanced page controls for both large and small devices.

Formatting tools - Format content in a variety of different ways, including font colors, font sizes, and font style. A redesigned tool base provides a secondary bar that displays additional options, which is helpful on smaller screens. Students and faculty will see these changes everywhere they encounter the rich text editor in Ultra courses. (available January 7, 2021)

HTML Content Block in Ultra Documents - Instructors can create, edit, and delete custom HTML/CSS code blocks in Ultra course documents. Instructors can select Add HTML when creating a document to add their own HTML and CSS and fully customize the appearance of their Ultra course documents.
Collaborate update features chat mention & text formatting

<Tagline>Support for up to 1,000 attendees in supersized session</Tagline>

In any online learning experience, it's important for students to be able to engage socially and collaboratively. Interactions with peers and instructors can lead to greater student success. Collaborate introduces two new features to its chat functionality to support increased engagement: chat mentions and formatted messaging.

With the December update, attendees can tag someone in a Collaborate chat when they mention them. Anyone tagged is notified so they don't miss it. Moderators are identified with a MOD label so they are easy to find. Collaborate also features a new text editor in the chat panel. This text editor is simple and features only bold, italics, and underline. One way to use this new formatting option is to highlight a chat announcement in bold to make a message more noticeable in a busy conversation.

Currently, Collaborate can support regular sessions of 250 attendees or supersized sessions up to 500 attendees. In preparation for WT/SP2021, faculty and community leaders can leverage Collaborate to support large scale sessions up to 1,000 attendees.
