GO Chat Recap: Super Size Courses

<Tagline>Here's what you missed from our Go Online Chat!</Tagline>

Last month, we reflected on the transition from face-to-face instruction to online instruction for one of UMBC's largest introductory courses CHEM 101, with its instructors Drs. Sarah Bass and Tara Carpenter.

We discussed some recent articles that have been on our mind:

The Washington Post, Cheating-detection companies made millions during the pandemic. Now students are fighting back. We understand that student privacy is incredibly important when using tools like Respondus Monitor, though we hope students and faculty consider the environment we all operate under with remote teaching and learning.

Inside Higher Ed, Dealing with student distraction. Students are always around distractions and instead we can shift the conversation to focus on engagement. Based on a recent PIVOT survey, UMBC students would agree that the need for breaks during extended synchronous sessions can help with their engagement.

The Guardian, Up to 50% of university students unhappy with online learning, (Australian) regulator finds. While some of the student concerns addressed in the article are not new, we talked about some of the universal challenges and how faculty and staff need to be flexible during uncertain times.

Drs. Sarah Bass and Tara Carpenter originally began their journey shifting their super-sized CHEM 101 course through the Alternative Delivery Program (ADP), originally intending their course to be delivered in a hybrid model. This modality would give them the flexibility to foster synchronous active learning, and asynchronous lecture and content delivery.

While rebuilding many components of the course, Sarah and Tara were deeply intentional about the costs associated with course materials. Recognizing that high costs presented challenges to access course materials, Sarah and Tara employed Open Educational Resources which substantially lowered the total cost of materials for their course.

Assessments play an integral role in this course. Before UMBC's physical campus closed due to COVID-19, CHEM 101 participated in a limited pilot using Akindi, a scantron alternative where instructors can use any standard printer to print bubble sheets and use any standard scanner to scan completed bubble sheets directly into Blackboard. Since then, Sarah and Tara have employed test pools, groups, and adaptive release in their Blackboard courses to promote academic integrity and to administer assessments without the need of a lockdown browser.

Check out the full GO Chat here.

Our next GO Chat takes place on Friday, January 22: 2021 The Year of Open Ed.
FBI and DHHS Warn Public About COVID-19 Scams

<Tagline>This December is a Perfect Season For Scammers</Tagline>

December is a month of holidays, travel, and family gatherings. Most years, December creates extra stress but makes up for it with special occasions enjoyed with family and friends. This year, there will be less enjoyment of those special occasions and, for most of us, a lot more stress as we remain locked down awaiting the widespread dissemination of the COVID-19 vaccines. The lockdown has many of us feeling disoriented, isolated, angry, or afraid. This is both perfectly normal and just the state of mind that scammers like to see.

Expect to see and/or hear about fake vaccine scams in the coming weeks. The scams will differ in intent. Some will encourage you to use your credit card or bank account to send the scammers money in order to assure vaccination quickly. Others may simply ask you to fill out an online form with lots of personal information. Some may even offer you a work-from-home job calling people about vaccination. Whatever the scam is, the COVID-19 vaccine will be the bait.

From the FBI

Special Agent in Charge Timothy Thibault recently told ABC News:

"What we would say to the public is to be leery of and be on guard for scams related to telemarketing, malicious websites or emails where people are taking advantage of the initial supply-and-demand problem"

From the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)

The DHHS Office of Inspector General issued an alert earlier this month warning:

Be vigilant and protect yourself from potential fraud concerning COVID-19 vaccines.
Tips on Identifying Phishing Scams

<Tagline>Think, Then Slow Down And Think Again</Tagline>

The article linked below lists a few tips on how to identify phishing scams in your daily life or while you are working. Here is a short list of some clues to help identify phishing emails.

The email address does not match business name or location. With many phishing emails if you look closely at the FROM address, you might notice misspelling or even something that doesn’t match the organization at all. One type that has been seen at UMBC are scammers having an email that ends with <.umbc@gmail.com> to try and trick users into thinking it is from a UMBC source.

A sense of urgency. Many phishing emails will have a sense of urgency that are created to distract the user from the emails true intentions. The idea is that the victim is too preoccupied with getting the action completed to see that it is a false request.

Uncommon request from someone within the organization. Is this email coming from someone you do not normally work with? Would they normally be asking you to help complete this task or project?

Poor grammar and spelling. Many times the true sign of a suspicious email are common words being misspelled. There could also be capitalizations in almost random spots of a sentence and the spacing between words might be off.

Phishing scams are not the only tactics that are used by malicious actors. Many are impersonating or creating fake charities and using social media to further expand their campaign. Twitter has been seeing many of the “send me $1 and I will send you $2” scams as well as an increase in scams promoting bitcoins.

With charities, malicious actors are creating seemingly wholesome and thorough charity websites or social media profiles to target those who want to help. These scams often come as telemarketers or prompted phone calls. If you would like to give to an organization please do your research before giving any personal or financial information.

If you do receive any email that you suspect is a scam, please do not click on any URL or reply. Either of those actions confirms to the sender that your email address is valid.
HPCF Users Produced over 400 Publications

<Tagline>New count of HPCF publications since 2008</Tagline>

Dear Researchers, Colleagues, and Students,

Thanks to many of you for sending information on publications, including journal and conference papers and also theses (senior/undergrad, Master's, PhD). Please, keep sending this information! The publications list is the most vital demonstration of success of HPCF both to the NSF and to the UMBC administration.

I am happy to share the new totals with you: The users generated over 400 publications, including 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals (including Nature, Science, and other top-tier journals in their fields), 50 refereed conference papers, and 50 theses. This count started in 2008, when HPCF was formally established. The detailed list is available on the HPCF webpage under Publications.

This is also currently reported to the NSF in the MRI Final Report for the three-year grant awarded in 2017. This final report also includes an Outcomes Report, which is also posted on the HPCF webpage under the Research tab. This same tab has list of projects using taki, a handout, poster, and presentation slides, and more. In particular, please use the Supporting Materials link for Acknowledgments text for publications.

This is also a chance for a special thanks to the HPCF RAs Reetam Majumder and Carlos Barajas! They support me and the user community and sys admin with many things, but also particularly with the publications and project lists and the NSF report.

Matthias Gobbert, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, gobbert@umbc.edu

(Chair of the HPCF Governance Committee and PI of the MRI grants)

HyFlex Instruction Classroom Upgrades for Spring 2021

<Tagline>Upgrades to Instructional Spaces for Remote Learning</Tagline>

In the spring of 2019, DoIT's AV Services department engineered and installed a software-based video conferencing system in Engineering 025 as a pilot project. Based on the success of this project, the Provost's Office has funded the creation of four more systems to support HyFlex learning, typically defined as letting students choose between online or face-to-face (F2F) delivery, and in "real time" (or synchronously). These systems will improve the total student experience for those in-person and off-site, enjoying vastly better audio and video quality and fostering student engagement.

In our current COVID-19 environment, HyFlex classrooms and pedagogy present a real opportunity to facilitate learning with groups of students who may not be able to gather in person.

The AV Services department will be upgrading the classroom technology in four campus locations - AD101 (LH3), SOND105, ITE227, and ITE233 - to better accommodate hybrid learning in the spring 2021 semester. HyFlex technology in classrooms includes multiple video cameras to capture the instructor and the class, microphones in the ceiling to capture student audio, and control equipment to provide a more seamless experience for users in the classroom. Any software-based video conferencing client such as Webex and Blackboard Collaborate can be utilized in these new classrooms.

Although there is a learning curve with the technology, DoIT staff will be available to assist with using the technology and adjusting to teaching in a new method. These instructional spaces will be enhanced, but the operation will be familiar to those who have used them in the past.

We look forward to working collaboratively with faculty as they adapt their courses to work in a HyFlex environment and adjust to the new technology.

- The AV Services Team, x52461

If an instructor would like to use one of the four rooms that are being upgraded, they should proceed as follows:

For approved HyFlex/in-person classes where instructor and some or all students will be in the classroom:

Instructors should work with their departmental scheduling coordinator, who will submit a request to the Registrar's Office through RT. The Registrar's Office will work with the scheduling coordinator to reserve the space and update the Schedule of Classes.

For online courses where the instructor would like to use the space to broadcast to remote students:

The instructor or the departmental scheduling coordinator should submit a request including the course information (ex ENGL 100, section 2). If one of the spaces is available during the class time, the Registrar's Office will reserve the room. There will be no changes in the Schedule of Classes as students should not be attending in person. Please note that the instructor will also need to complete the Return to On-Campus Work Approval Process if not already approved to be on campus during the semester.

Administration 101 (LH3) - Traditional lecture hall seating, capacity 32

Sondheim 105 - Active learning space with flexible seating, capacity 17

Information Technology & Engineering 227 - tiered traditional classroom with ample student table surface, capacity 17

Information Technology & Engineering 233 - tiered seminar style classroom with ample student table surface, capacity 17

By Ally Hepp

DoIT's Sherri Braxton Leaving UMBC

What can I say, it’s 2020. I’m writing to announce that Sherri Braxton, Senior Director of Instructional Technology in the Division of Information Technology, has accepted a new position as Senior Director of Digital Innovation at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Her last day at UMBC will be Friday, January 15, 2021.

Since joining UMBC in 2014, Sherri has made invaluable contributions to DoIT and become a highly-respected member of the campus community. In addition to leading the expansion of DoIT’s instructional technology team from three to ten full-time staff, she and her talented colleagues developed and led the popular PIVOT (Planning Instructional Variety in Online Teaching) initiative in response to the Coronavirus pandemic. With nearly 70 percent of all faculty participating in at least one workshop (and nearly 300 completing the PIVOT Plus certificate), PIVOT has become the single largest instructional technology faculty development initiative in UMBC’s history. Students have praised well-designed PIVOT courses as well. In addition, Sherri has led DoIT’s competency based education and micro-credentialing efforts, including partnering in the popular FinancialSmarts literacy program for UMBC students.

“Apart from Sherri’s technical expertise and many accomplishments, she is known for her personal and professional commitment to inclusive excellence,” says Jack Suess, Vice President of IT and Chief Information Officer (CIO). “In short, people of all backgrounds, united by excellence, want to work for and with Sherri. She brings energy and quality to everything she does, and quite frankly, it’s contagious. Bowdoin CIO Michael Cato has worked with her to design a new role that is unique in higher education and fits perfectly to her skills. We’ll miss Sherri, but wish her nothing but the best in her new role.”

Beyond her work in DoIT, Sherri has also served on the UMBC Women’s Center advisory board, and was an active member and leader in the USM Academic Transformation Council, helping lead USM initiatives in accessibility, competency based education and open educational resources (OER), designed to help reduce student textbooks costs.

A co-director and faculty of the EDUCAUSE Learning Technology Leadership Program, Sherri has also served as co-leader of the EDUCAUSE Instructional Technology Community Group. She served as a task force co-lead for the IMS Global Consortium Open Badge Extensions for Education (OBEE) initiative and continues to serve as a member of IMS Global Open Badges and Comprehensive Learner Record working groups as well as the Adaptive Learning and Digital Credentials Innovation Leadership Networks.

I will follow up about future plans later, but for now, please join me in congratulating Sherri on her new endeavors, and thanking her for her success and collegial friendship at UMBC.

Sincerely,
John Fritz
Associate VP, Instructional Technology
UMBC Division of Information Technology (DoIT)
