<Title>SU2014 Bb Course Shells Created 4/17/14</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Bb course <span>shells</span> for SU2014 were <span>created</span> on April 17, 2014 on the Bb production server at <a href="http://blackboard.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://blackboard.umbc.edu</a>.  Enrollments for SU2014 courses will continue to be updated daily. Bb <span>shells</span> are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/go/schedule" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC)</a>, provided that there is an <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/blogs/oit-news/archives/2010/08/how_new_employe_1.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">instructor of record</a> listed. The addition of new course sections and/or instructors will result in new Bb <span>shells</span> being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in SA, and will update hourly.</p><p>If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/go/schedule" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SOC</a>, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Once you are listed in the <a href="https://my.umbc.edu/go/schedule" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SOC</a>, your Bb course <span>shell</span> will be <span>created</span> automatically.<br></p><p><strong>Note</strong>: Previously, in situations where one instructor was teaching multiple sections of the same course, by default all sections were combined into one Bb course <span>shell</span>. <strong>This also included sections of the same course taught in <em>both</em> <span>Summer</span> Session I <em>and</em> II.</strong> DoIT has addressed this Session I and Session II issue so there will be distinct shells for each if taught by the same instructor. But if you find this is not the case, and you want separate <span>shells for Session I and II</span>, please <a href="https://my.umbc.edu/go/request-help" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">submit an RT ticket</a> with your request. <Title>Students More Accepting of Using Clickers for Exams</Title>
<Tagline>2nd Clicker Pilot Continues Comparison with Scantron Testing</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div>To <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit/news/37747" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">continue its evaluation</a> of clickers as a possible alternative to scantron “bubble sheet” <span>assessments, DoIT again partnered with Dr. Tamara Mendelson from Biology in a pilot this </span><span>semester using the <a href="http://www.tritondatacollectionsystem.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Triton Data Collection System (DCS)</a> by Turning Technologies (TT). </span><span>Compared to Mendelson’s Fall 2013 pilot in the much larger Biology 142 (300+ students), this </span><span>semester’s pilot is running in her BIOL 481/681 “Advanced Topics in Evolutionary Biology,” a </span><span>class of 26 students.</span></div><div><br></div><div>Also, while students in the BIOL 142 (Fall 2013) pilot were generally supportive of the clickers <span>for short (1-3 question) quizzes, a <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit/media/8964" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Nov. 22 Brown Bag demo</a> showed they were much less </span><span>willing to use clickers for mid-term and final exams. A key issue may have been one of the pilot </span><span>conditions: deliberately NOT using them for high-stakes assessments. As a result, students may </span><span>not have been fully prepared for how to use them on longer tests and exams.</span></div><div><br></div><div>By contrast, the BIOL 481 (Spring 2014) pilot used the same NXT clickers for longer (8-10 <span>question), in-class quizzes. Mendelson enabled (and encouraged) the <a href="https://www.turningtechnologies.com/self-paced-training" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">self-paced polling</a> feature </span><span>which students used for multiple quizzes every class, as well as on the mid-term exam. She is </span><span>also planning to use these same clickers to implement the final exam. </span></div><div><br></div><div>DoIT staff recently met with Mendelson and her students for an informal discussion about their <span>experiences so far. </span></div><div><br></div><div>Based on an informal survey in class, over 50% of students preferred clickers over scantrons for <span>taking exams, 38% preferred scantrons over clickers and the rest 12% were neutral. Some of the </span><span>overall feedback that we received regarding using clickers for exams and quizzes included the </span><span>following:</span></div><div><br></div><blockquote><div>“I liked taking the exam on the clickers because we had our own exam booklet in front of <span>us and could go at our own pace. I also liked getting my grade back right away”;</span></div></blockquote><div><br></div><blockquote><div>“As a new technology for test taking, I think these clickers were fabulous. My only <span>suggestion would be to make logging in more seamless/secure. While minor problems were </span><span>easily resolved in a small classroom setting, it would be incredibly frustrating in a huge </span><span>lecture hall”;</span></div></blockquote><div><br></div><blockquote><div>“Clickers are much better than scatrons. You can change your answer and not worry about <span>erasure smudges messing with the scantron reading and outputting the wrong grade”;</span></div></blockquote><div><br></div><blockquote><div>“Using clickers would cut down on paper usage, which is a plus”;</div></blockquote><div><br></div><blockquote><div>“I prefer scantrons even though the clickers work pretty well, security and accessibility <span>still seems like a concern, especially considering the number of times people have issues </span><span>signing in”.</span></div></blockquote><div><br></div><div>Overall most students seemed accepting of clickers as an alternate to taking exams using <span>scantrons. Those that </span>weren't<span> comfortable said this was because they did not have all their answers right in front of them. They said that they would prefer having a hard copy of their </span><span>answers so that they can make marks and comments on the answer sheet instead of scrolling </span><span>through answers on the clicker. They were also afraid their clicker would have technical issues </span><span>during an exam.</span></div><div><br></div><div>One key technical issue is students having to repeatedly login between quizzes. Working with <span>TT, DoIT identified the issue, but not until after the mid-term was over. Still, Mendelson says </span><span>she prefers clickers over scantrons “because I can upload grades immediately and see which </span><span>questions are difficult and which are easy, which students are struggling, etc., in very nice </span><span>histograms.”</span></div><div><br></div><div>Currently, DoIT is reviewing our pilot experience with Turning Technologies and offering <span>suggestions for improving the Triton system so students and faculty are comfortable using </span><span>clickers as an alternative to scantrons on any kind of assessment. However, a key feature is self-</span><span>paced polling, which is not available with the current clickers most students own. DoIT has a </span><span>small set of 100 NXT clickers that support self-paced polling and is willing to extend the </span><span>pilot to other faculty interested in trying them out. <Title>Known Issue: Missing Bb Modules Caused by Editing</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><strong>5/19/14 Update:</strong><div><br></div><div>This issue is fixed in Service Pack (SP) 14 of version 9.1. We are on SP 13, but are unlikely to upgrade before January 2015 given overlapping dates when final grades are due and one semester starts or finishes.</div><div><br></div><div>In the meantime, DoIT has disabled module customization by users. We realize this will create or even "freeze" long lists of Bb courses for students and faculty who may have tried to <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=17171412" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">"remove" old courses by hiding them</a>. A workaround for faculty trying to <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=22708244" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">export</a> and <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=22708253" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">import</a> old courses that may now be hidden is to use the<strong> "Courses" Tab</strong> inside Blackboard that lists all courses.</div><div><br></div><div>Division of Information Technology (DoIT)</div><div><br></div><div>--------------------------------------------------------------</div><div><br></div><div>
    Blackboard users who attempt to manage their module settings are reporting they are unable edit the modules and trying to do so results in all modules being removed from the given Blackboard tab. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vblGuapz8g" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">This screencast</a> illustrates how the issue impacts the interface of a user attempting to edit the My Courses module within the myBlackboard tab, and the thumbnail to the right provides an example of a Blackboard tab with missing modules.<br> <br><a href="http://doit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">DoIT</a> is resetting the Blackboard tabs daily to address this issue. However, this is a manual fix and the problem will not be addressed on a system level until a future service-pack upgrade. <strong>We recommend users not attempt to modify the default module settings because doing so will impact the Blackboard interface until<a href="http://doit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> DoIT</a> runs the daily system maintenance.</strong><br></div></div>

<Title>Campus Webmail to be Upgraded on May 28</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>On Wednesday, May 28 at 7am, DoIT will be performing an upgrade of the campus webmail environment on our dedicated Cyrus mail server. The current webmail environment is extremely out of date on both the hardware and software. There will be a brief 5 minute outage to transition to the new server and no data will be lost during this upgrade.  Anyone logged into webmail prior to 7am will need to restart their browser and login again.  Users of Cyrus webmail will notice a more refined interface with new colors as well as some icons that have shifted location.

<Title>Using Box to Collect and Assess Job Applications</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>An increasing number of departments are using the Box "upload by email" option as an effective way to conduct job searches. Apart from making it easy to collect applications, committee members can assess and even “vote” on applications remotely, saving face-to-face meetings for reaching consensus on applications where none exists yet.</span></p><p><span>For general help on Box see the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Box+at+UMBC" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Need Help</span></a><span>” link at </span><a href="http://box.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>box.umbc.edu</span></a><span>, but here are some basic steps DoIT recommends for using Box on a search committee:</span></p><ol><li><p><span>Create an "Applications" or "Applicants" folder, anywhere in Box where you’d like to receive applications.  Maybe add "Qualified" and "Unqualified" subfolders, too, for sorting the received files. </span></p></li><li><p><span>Give your committee access to the folder(s) you just created. </span></p></li><li><p><span>Find the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/0QAxAg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>upload by email</span></a><span>” address function for the "Applications" folder, located under "email options." Note: By default, this address is is NOT enabled for “collaborators only.” This is good, because you want applicants to be able to use the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/0QAxAg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>upload by email</span></a><span>” address, too.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Include the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/0QAxAg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>upload by email</span></a><span>” address in your formal job posting for how interested parties should apply.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Ideally, ask applicants to submit their materials as a single .pdf file to the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/0QAxAg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>upload by email</span></a><span>” address for your Box folder. Why? A single file is preferable so the search committee doesn’t have to hunt and gather multiple files per applicant (e.g., cover letter, resume, references, etc.).</span></p></li><li><p><span>Once you’re ready to begin the review of applications, ask your committee members to add a </span><span>“Yes, No or Maybe”</span><span> comment to each applicant’s file in Box before the committee’s first face-to-face meeting. This way, you can spend your time trying to reach consensus on applicants where there clearly is no conensus.</span></p></li></ol><p><span>There's really only one intervention that DoIT recommends for step #3 above: create an easy to remember email alias (such as "<a href="mailto:yourdepartmentjobsearch@umbc.edu">yourdepartmentjobsearch@umbc.edu</a>") to replace the machine generated, difficult-to-remember email address that is created by default. To do so, submit an </span><a href="http://my.umbc.edu/help" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>RT ticket</span></a><span> requesting creation of the alias for your submissions. <Title>Sherri Braxton-Lieber Named Dir. of Instructional Technology</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>I am pleased to announce that Dr. <strong>Sherri Braxton-Lieber</strong>, Special Assistant to the Provost and Director of Course Redesign at Bowie State University (BSU), has accepted UMBC’s Director of Instructional Technology position in the Division of Information Technology. She will start full-time on Tuesday, May 27, and serve as the primary point of contact for DoIT’s <a href="http://doit.umbc.edu/itnm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">instructional technology</a> support efforts.</div><div><br></div><div>With more than 17 years of experience in traditional classroom instruction, Sherri also brings over 14 years of experience using learning technologies in higher education settings. Among her current duties at BSU, Sherri provides leadership and oversight of the academic computing staff supporting faculty in course redesign, effective use of educational technologies to improve learning outcomes, and the design, development and implementation of online courses. She drafted BSU’s strategic plan for online learning and serves as BSU’s liaison to the University System of Maryland’s Academic Transformation initiatives. She was also an assistant professor of computer science at BSU from 1998 to 2003. </div><div><br></div><div>Before assuming her administrative role at Bowie in 2010, Sherri served as an adjunct faculty member, Senior Instructional Designer and then Director of Distance Education at the Johns Hopkins University Engineering for Professionals (JHU-EP) Online Distance Learning Center. She served as the subject matter expert in the area of distance education and worked with faculty, chairs and senior management to lead the program through its first course reviews and certifications under <a href="http://www.qualitymatters.org" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Quality Matters</a>, the highly-regarded, voluntary national peer review process for effective online and hybrid/blended learning. She also teaches online for University of Maryland, University College (UMUC) and Walden University.</div><div><br></div><div>Sherri holds a Sc.D in Computer Science with minors in Educational Leadership and Management Science from George Washington University (2000), a Master’s in Computer Science with Mathematics minor from North Carolina State University (1994), and a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science with Mathematics minor from Wake Forest University (1992). </div><div><br></div><div>A resident of Clarksville, MD, Sherri and her husband, Sam, have two children Ethan (11) and Sarah (7). <Title>UMBC Response to Heartbleed Security Incident</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>A major security vulnerability named </span><span>Heartbleed</span><span> was disclosed Monday night.  The vulnerability affects a large portion of websites on the Internet, and here at UMBC, that use the "<strong>https:" </strong>protocol for secure web traffic. Many servers that support "<strong>https:"</strong>  utilize a package named OpenSSL to encrypt webpages.  The <strong>"https:" </strong>protocol, which is referred to as SSL or secure socket layer, is a cryptographic protocol which is designed to provide secure communication over the Internet. The vulnerability could allow usernames and passwords being exchanged over the web to be stolen.</span><br><div><span><br></span><span>Starting with the announcement on Monday evening, DoIT staff have been working to understand the risks, determine which systems are vulnerable, and take the necessary steps to remediate or lessen the risk. DoIT classifies system risk from 0 - very low to 3 (very high).  Over the last two days we have patched or remediated all of our level 2 and 3 servers. We expect to have all systems patched this week.  In addition, we are working with departmental IT staff to identify and address issues in the departments. We also continue to work closely with commercial partners to patch devices and equipment that may be impacted</span><br>

    <span>Prior to this event occurring, DoIT was planning to move forward with a <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit/news/43156" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">mandatory password change</a> for all users starting the end of April. As a precaution, we are looking at expediting this process and will be sending out another message on this early next week to expedite that process. </span><br>

<Title>Classroom/Event Scheduling Downtime (R25)</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Please note that the Classroom and Event scheduling system known as R25 will be down from 4-15-2014 through 4-17-2014. <br><br>The downtime is needed to complete phase 1 of 2 for migrating the current R25 scheduling solution to the cloud .
