In the event of heavy snow or other emergency when classes cannot meet, UMBC faculty can choose from several tools and technologies to support teaching and learning. Online delivery methods offer many good alternative for supporting missed classroom time.
Blackboard Learn supports three core components:
- With Content Management, faculty can upload course materials & handouts; post presentations, share links & resources. Faculty can also embed YouTube videos or record with a webcam to embed video anywhere in the course.
- Faculty can also support Communication, Collaboration and other Student Engagement. Continue course discussions in Blackboard, send email, post announcements, or manage small group activities.
- With Assessment and Grade Management tools, faculty can distribute & collect assignments, grade electronically, deliver tests, and maintain a gradebook -- all in one central location.

Blackboard Downtime Scheduled Wednesday Feb 4, 2 AM - 4 AM
Maintenance will resolve time zone issue
Blackboard engineers will perform a server update on Wednesday morning, February 4, 2015 from 2 AM - 4 AM. Blackboard will be offline during this period.
During this downtime, our system will be updated with the latest patch and application servers adjusted to fully align our system with standard tuning parameters. In doing so, the irregular time zone behavior observed by some users will be reset to Eastern Standard.
In preparation for this downtime:
- Instructors: Please refrain from assigning any work that is due on Blackboard during this maintenance window. When the system is offline, students cannot submit their work.
- Students: Please be sure to save or submit any work before this time. Any unsaved or unsubmitted work will immediately be lost when the system shuts down.
After Blackboard is back online, please clear your Internet browser cache and cookies before logging in using

Critical Security Flaw in Core Linux Library
Allows for complete control of a system with no credentials
Earlier this week a critical security flaw in the gethostbyname() function of glibc in Linux was exposed. This effects many major linux distributions including Redhat 5 and Redhat 6 Enterprise. This vulnerability has the potential to allow a fairly simple attack to gain complete control of a server. Any vulnerable servers should be patched and rebooted as soon as possible.
DoIT has been patching and rebooting our systems and we are now protected from this on all centrally managed accessible servers. We would encourage any linux admins to check out the posting below to see if your system is vulnerable and patch accordingly. I've also included a link to a PCworld article with a new exploit that just came out showing how this flaw can be used.
Its being referred to as the GHOST vulnerability because it uses the GetHost function. Besides the obvious security issue, this one has some marketing behind it as well, its even got a cute logo (see below), so I think you may see it around the news at some point.

Clicker Updates Reflect Secure Connection for New Blackboard
Students will need to re-register their devices
Since UMBC migrated to the new Blackboard managed hosting site, instructors who use clickers must now include https with the URL to access TurningPoint course participant lists. The full URL is now https://blackboard.umbc.edu. In previous semesters, instructors did not need to include the prefix or “s” to secure the session.
Turning Technologies also updated the way the Blackboard registration tool functions and stores information. Previously, the information was stored within Blackboard. Now the information is stored on Turning Technologies' servers. Students will need to re-register their devices.

Blackboard Maintenance Scheduled Friday Jan 30, 12:01 AM-6AM
Blackboard will be offline from 1AM - 5AM during this period
Blackboard engineers will perform infrastructure maintenance at the datacenter where we are hosted on Friday, January 30, 2015 from 12:01 AM - 6AM.
Blackboard itself will also be offline from 1AM-5AM during this period for server maintenance. This is a change from the initial expectation for the maintenance window when Blackboard anticipated only email downtime. As previously mentioned, this update also involves the upgrading of the Managed Hosting email relay servers, previously described in this news article. Email sent by users through Blackboard between 12:01 AM and 6AM on January 30, 2015 will not be sent nor queued for later processing. Faculty and student users are advised to email directly through Gmail if communication during this maintenance window is essential. Email sent directly through Gmail is not affected by the Blackboard maintenance.

DoIT Student Intern Published in Educause Review
Please join me in congratulating Laura Lefavor on her recent article published in Educause Review Online called Beyond the IT Help Desk.
EDUCAUSE® is a nonprofit association and the foremost community of IT leaders and
professionals committed to advancing higher education.
The article explains how UMBC was able to use the RT (Request Tracker) Help System, REX (Report EXchange) Data Warehouse, and FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) Knowledge Base systems to achieve a comprehensive help desk solution for the entire university.
Laura joined the Business Systems Group (BSG) of Division of Information Technology
(DoIT) in the summer of 2012 and has been invaluable getting the word out about some of the success stories involving DoIT and our campus partners.
Her ability to grasp the concepts of the various technologies used throughout DoIT and pull them together in a cohesive manner has been remarkable.
Laura is a recent UMBC graduate (Class of 2013), a member of the English Honors Society (Sigma Tau Delta), and a recipient of the Learning Resource Center's Outstanding Tutor Award.
I am also excited for Laura as she begins her new position as the Arts and Entertainment Coordinator at The Baltimore Sun starting August 19, 2013.

The myUMBC team has been working hard on updating myUMBC -- striving for a better balance between community, institutional and personal information.
Student involvement is a very important part of this process and this event will give you a first hand opportunity to learn more about what we are working on and offer your feedback about what we can do better.
Food and drinks will be provided. This event is for students only.
