As part of UMBC's ongoing commitment to fostering equitable and inclusive learning and working environments, we are pleased to share our growing training opportunities designed to deepen our community's understanding of religious discrimination and equip faculty and staff with effective strategies to address it. Additionally, FZT invites participants to recognize how assumptions, misunderstandings, and lack of awareness about religion and spirituality can influence interactions, classroom and workplace dynamics, policies, and institutional culture. The session emphasizes curiosity, respectful engagement across differences, and the importance of inclusive practices that support a diverse campus community.

During this session, participants will:

Learn and define terms connected to the study of religion and spirituality

Learn about the diversity of religious and spiritual traditions on campus as well as national trends within higher education.

Explore the role that religion and spirituality play in individual identity and lived experience by engaging in personal reflection and storytelling.

Reflect on personal assumptions, biases, and knowledge gaps related to religion and belief.

Examine common challenges and misunderstandings related to religious expression in academic and workplace settings.

Engage in interactive activities and dialogue to practice respectful communication across belief differences.

Discuss strategies for fostering inclusive environments that honor religious and spiritual diversity.

Example learning outcomes: By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

Demonstrate increased knowledge, religious literacy, and awareness of diverse belief systems and how they intersect with identity, culture, and institutional life on college campuses.

Interrogate their own personal experiences with religion and spirituality, including biases assumptions, misunderstandings, and knowledge gaps

Apply practical strategies and best practices for engagement with individuals of different faiths or belief systems.

Commit to continued learning and engagement in order to support and create spaces for religious practice, belonging, and energetic pluralism.

Learn More & Get Involved

For questions about UMBC's Policy on Faith-Based and Religious Accommodations, please contact ECR at ecr@umbc.edu.

We encourage all campus partners to take advantage of these opportunities to strengthen our shared culture of equity and belonging.

For questions about registering, scheduling, or determining the best session for your role, please visit culture.umbc.edu or contact the Community & Culture team at culture@umbc.edu.

All sessions are open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or any other protected category under applicable federal law, state law, and the University's nondiscrimination policy.

Seeking Participants for Social Justice Dialogue Cohort Experiences

<Tagline>Faculty, staff and students: apply for SJDCE today!</Tagline>

The Social Justice Dialogues Cohort Experience (SJDCE) at UMBC invites participants from all perspectives and experiences to engage in meaningful conversations across difference. Rooted in intergroup dialogue theory, SJDCE provides a space to learn and practice the skills, tools, and mindsets necessary for effective communication across diverse identities and lived experiences — with courage, empathy, and openness.

The Social Justice Dialogue Cohort Experiences at UMBC are 8 two-hour dialogue circles that bring together students, faculty, and staff, to engage in sustained, facilitated dialogue across difference. Each cohort meets weekly within one of UMBC's vibrant cultural centers: The Mosaic, The Pride Center, and The Gathering Space.

In a time of growing polarization and deepening social divides, and fear surrounding living authentically, the Social Justice Dialogues Cohort Experience (SJDCE) offers a way forward, not through debate or persuasion, but through connection, listening, and shared learning.

Cohorts will be split between faculty/staff and students (both undergraduate and graduate), allowing participants to forge meaningful relationships with peers similarly passionate about social change, leadership and humanizing pedagogies.

Students interested in applying for the pilot program can do so here.
Inclusive excellence has long been a
cultural touchstone at UMBC. Before now, we haven't had a definition or any
other shared language to describe what we mean. This is your chance to inform
our definition. Leaders in the Division of Institutional Equity have drafted a
framework for inclusive excellence, and we want your input!

The framework aims to articulate our
community's shared commitments in a way that can communicate our values, guide
action, inspire new collaboration, and support the development and
implementation of UMBC's next strategic plan.

Join The Centers for Social Justice Dialogue and Democracy and Civic Life for
UMBC Talks, which are 90-minute, co-facilitated dialogues designed to support
your engagement with the framework. Each UMBC Talk will be the same, so please
sign up for the one that best suits your schedule. We hope to see you there.

INSIDE DOIE

<Tagline>Meet Tawny McManus</Tagline>

Inside DOIE is a monthly series that introduces the faces in Division of Institutional Equity. This project is an opportunity for our campus community to get to know the team.

Tawny McManus(she/they/any)

Role within the Division: Asst Vice President for Accessibility & Disability Services

How long have you been at UMBC? : 11 years UMBC, 1.5 DOIE

How would you describe your role within the Division of Institutional Equity?

I serve as a partner and ally in the Division's equity and inclusion efforts, leading and supporting UMBC's work to advance disability access. My role centers on fostering the creation of proactive, welcoming, and disability-inclusive practices, initiatives, and policies across the university. I view accessibility as a core equity priority, a moral imperative, a legal requirement, and a central focus and passion of my work within DOIE. I am committed to cultivating a university community that works collectively and collaboratively to eliminate barriers that limit the full and equitable participation of students, staff, and visitors with disabilities. My vision is one of lasting disability culture change—where programs, services, classes, facilities, and daily operations are universally designed for all of us; where accommodations become obsolete because access is already built in; and where disability identity is recognized as a strength of our diverse community.

Can you share a moment or experience that shaped your passion for equity and inclusion work?

It is difficult to name a single moment, as my "why" has been shaped by a lifetime of experiences that continue to influence and deepen my commitment. As a person with multiple disabilities, a mother of children with disabilities, and a daughter, sister, cousin, colleague, and friend to people with disabilities, disability identity and lived experience have been a constant presence in my life. Experiencing and witnessing barriers, setbacks, exclusion, and bias have continually fueled my passion for advancing disability access and inclusion work. I have dedicated my career to being in service to people with disabilities and have found purpose and belonging in promoting disability awareness, acceptance, and inclusion in higher education, where I believe meaningful and lasting change is possible.

What is one initiative or project you're currently working on that excites you?

I'd be remiss if I didn't shout "Digital Accessibility" from the rooftops as the answer to this one! I have had the opportunity to work as part of an incredible team across multiple divisional offices on the creation of a roadmap and plan for ensuring that all of UMBC's digital web content is accessible to individuals with disabilities by April 2026, the deadline given by the Department of Justice's final rule updating the regulations of Title II of the ADA. This is exciting as it is a huge step forward in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for our disability community and a demonstration of our commitment to becoming an inclusively excellent university. We were given a limited timeline and resources to meet this goal, and in true UMBC fashion, the village has come together to make tremendous progress in a short time. I am so proud to be a part of this moment in UMBC history.

Outside of work, what's something that brings you joy or helps you recharge?

Exercise! I'm an avid Pilates and barre lover, I enjoy the gym and group classes, and love the outdoors, hiking, and adventuring with my family. A bad day for me can turn around just like that once the endorphins are flowing.

Can you share a book/quote/movie or something others can engage with from your perspective of inclusive excellence.

"Sometimes the greatest gift you can give another person is to simply include them." -Unknown

Culture Conversations

<Tagline>Theme: Building Connected Campus Communities</Tagline>

This semester's Culture Conversations are designed to bring staff and faculty together to reflect, share experiences, and explore how relationships shape campus culture. Through facilitated conversations, this series will create spaces for collective sensemaking around connection, care, and belonging in our everyday work.

Session Descriptions

1. Engaging Digital Spaces: Join us for an interactive, conversation-driven exploration of how digital environments can strengthen community, expand access, and support more affordable and inclusive engagement on campus.

Facilitated by Dr. Olivia M. Copeland

Olivia M. Copeland (she/they) is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Kansas. She has worked across higher education contexts, from residential curriculum to LGBTQ+-centered work. Their scholarship centers on the role of identity, power, privilege, and digital spaces in the lives of undergraduate students, using critical interdisciplinary frameworks. A fat, queer, nonbinary Pilipino American doctoral candidate in Higher Education at the University of Arizona, they write from over a decade in residence life and student affairs, alongside commitments to care, relationality, and justice. Their current work illuminates how student affairs professionals navigate carceral logics and seek more just ways of being with one another.
