Hello all --
On behalf of the faculty and staff involved with the UMBC Graduate Cybersecurity Program, I want to welcome you to UMBC as we begin the new semester and calendar year, We are delighted you are part of the UMBC graduate student community and chosen to pursue your professional studies with us. For those returning to UMBC, welcome back!
During your time with us, among the technical and operational aspects of cybersecurity, you will learn that cybersecurity is an interdisciplinary profession. Although rooted in computer and information sciences, cybersecurity takes the concept of securing information assets and places it into a larger context of organizations, nations, and societies. Simply being a "good geek" or "good manager" is not enough unless your efforts can integrate with a larger professional team aligned toward a common goal. That said, you will become well-versed in the nature of cybersecurity, learn how "cyber" concerns relate to the "big picture" of our present day, and understand the effective analysis and implementation of appropriate cybersecurity policies, practices, and technologies. In short, through the UMBC Graduate Cybersecurity Program, you will amass the knowledge, skills, contacts, and resources needed to be an effective and competent cybersecurity practitioner both technically an!
d professionally.
As a research university, UMBC's graduate students are expected to be challenged in the classroom through assorted projects and assignments that will test your critical thinking, research, writing, collaborative, operational, and presentation skills. We believe this can be done in a supportive environment that encourages both group collaboration and individual autonomy in a balanced approach that will provide a meaningful academic and professional experience for you. It is this balance that sets UMBC apart from other programs in this field. I am confident that each of you will meet these academic tasks successfully and incorporate those experiences into your respective paths of professional development.
In the months ahead, we will be announcing more new courses, events, academic/professional opportunities, and other program updates via this e-mail list. But for now, some of the cyber-related opportunities you may wish to take advantage of at UMBC include:
