Dec. 5, 2023, 3-5 pm ET, ITE 325B and online

Committee: Drs. Frank Ferraro (Chair), Seung Jun Kim, Tim

Oates, Cynthia Matuszek, and Niranjan Balasubramanian (Stony Brook Univ.)

Representation learning aims at extracting relevant information from data to represent input in a way that is sufficient for performing a task. Specifically, this problem is difficult when the data under consideration is both sequential and discrete such as in natural language processing (NLP). From classical methods like topic modeling to modern transformer-based architectures one seeks to utilize the available information from data or transferable knowledge to learn richer representations. To that end, recent advances in current state-of-the-art models rely on two major strategies. a) Latent Knowledge Gathering , where we encourage a model to recognize semantic and thematically-relevant knowledge contained within the training data. Methods include clustering techniques like topic modeling and document classification. b) Injecting Background Information, where the goal is to exploit structural or representational priors, such as pretrained models or word embeddings to facilitate the training phase. Irrespective of the architecture or task, the training process invariably begins with the encoding of high-dimensional documents into more manageable, low-dimensional latent representations. We advocate for these representations to be optimized to capture and utilize more pertinent information, enhancing their efficacy in various language-based tasks. Considering document classification as an example of semantic analysis, both the encoder and decoder are vital in extracting essential information from inputs, especially when dealing with limited training data. Our extensive experiments assess the capabilities of models across various data regimes, highlighting the importance of efficient representation in handling the situation entity classification task. In thematic analysis, despite notable advancements, many previous studies have overlooked the extraction of valuable word-level information, such as latent thematic topics pertinent to each word. Additionally, the use of auxiliary knowledge has often been confined to basic applications like weight initialization. Some methods have simplified the process by merely appending external knowledge to the input. Nonetheless, the effective utilization of information whether derived directly from the data or leveraged from background knowledge remains a critical factor in document representation. It is essential to ensure that the process of information gathering does not compromise the richness of the original data.

First, we offer a novel lightweight unsupervised design that shows how to use topic models in conjunction with recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with minimal word-level information loss. Our approach maintains and uses lower-level representations that previous approaches had discarded, and then it gathers and provides that information to a natural language generation model. We conduct extensive experiments to compare the efficiency of the proposed model with previous proposed architectures. The results demonstrate that retaining and exploiting word topic assignments, previously overlooked, leads to new state-of-the-art performance in thematic analysis.

Second, we consider how background (or side) knowledge can be used to guide model and representation learning of text. This side knowledge can itself be structured, and may often be given categorically. However, the sources of side knowledge can be incomplete, meaning that the side knowledge may be structured, but partially observed. This poses challenges for learning. To handle this, we first focus on incomplete partially observed side knowledge. We propose using a structured, discrete, semi-supervised variational autoencoder framework, which uses provided side knowledge to represent the original input text. This method is intricately designed to use the partially observed knowledge as a guiding tool, without imposing limitations on the training phase. We show that our approach can robustly handle varying levels of side knowledge observation, and leads to consistent performance gains across multiple language modeling and classification metrics.

Ultimately, we delve into scenarios where side knowledge is not just incomplete but also contains noise. In this context, we introduce a universal framework for integrating discrete information, based on the information bottleneck principle. This framework involves a thorough theoretical exploration of how side information can be integrated into model parameters. Our extensive theoretical analysis and empirical studies, including a case study on event modeling, show that our approach not only extends and refines previous methods but also significantly enhances performance. The proposed framework lays a robust theoretical groundwork for future research in this domain.

Catherine Wraback, '23 chemical engineering, traditional track and AIChE co-president

Meet Catherine Wraback, a senior in the chemical engineering traditional track, President of the AIChE student organization, and a CWIT (Center for Women in Technology) Scholar. Catherine was also the President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) ChemE Jeopardy team which won first place at the 2022 national competition. She will be heading to GE Aerospace to become a part of the Edison Engineering Development Program. Take it away, Catherine!

Q: Why did you choose UMBC?

The Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) department at UMBC has a strong sense of community, which I experienced firsthand during a campus tour. I was impressed by the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of the department, and it was clear that the faculty and students form a close-knit group. One of the main reasons why I was attracted to UMBC is the family-like environment within the CBEE department, where professors and staff not only care about the academic success of their students, but also their personal well-being. This dynamic ensures that students receive the support they need to thrive both personally and professionally.

Q: Tell us about someone in the department who has inspired you or supported you & how did they do it?

Dr. Raikar and Dr. Castellanos are remarkable professors at UMBC, who go above and beyond to support their students. Dr. Raikar is known for her open-door policy, which makes her approachable to all students, and she is always willing to lend an ear and provide guidance on any topic. Her classes are not only inspiring, but also challenging and intellectually stimulating, which keeps students engaged and motivated.

Dr. Castellanos is an advocate for the needs of her students and encourages them to approach problem-solving from a holistic perspective, considering the broader impact on society. Her passion for thermodynamics is contagious and inspires her students to develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Both Dr. Raikar and Dr. Castellanos are instrumental in running the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChe) at UMBC. Their guidance and support ensure that the student organization runs smoothly and provides a valuable platform for students to develop their leadership skills, network with peers and professionals, and participate in various academic and social events.

Q: What do you love about your academic program?

The chemical engineering bachelor's program at UMBC offers a variety of tracks, which allows students to tailor their education to their specific interests and career goals. One of the most beneficial aspects of the program is the ability to choose elective courses, which provides students with the flexibility to customize their curriculum and explore various topics in depth. I particularly appreciated the ample opportunities to take labs, which provided me with hands-on experience and helped me develop my practical skills. Additionally, the program encourages students to design their own projects, which fosters creativity and innovation, and provides a platform to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Q: What clubs and orgs are you a part of and why? How was that experience?

I have had the privilege of serving as the President of the AIChE chapter at UMBC, as well as being a part of the Jeopardy Team, which has won at both the regional and national level. I am on the women's ultimate frisbee team at UMBC and attend practice twice a week. Being involved in these extracurricular activities has taught me valuable lessons in teamwork, conflict resolution, and leadership. Through these experiences, I have learned to approach disagreements with empathy and respect for diverse perspectives, while also managing multiple responsibilities and growing as a leader.

Moreover, being part of these teams has given me the opportunity to have fun and connect with my peers outside of the classroom. I have formed close personal connections with my teammates and learned a lot from their unique perspectives and experiences. These extracurricular activities have also taught me the importance of compassion and understanding towards others, and the value of taking time to enjoy the company of friends.

Q: What would you tell others who are in your shoes at UMBC?

I strongly encourage everyone to get involved in extracurricular activities and events on campus. Don't hesitate to attend office hours, ask questions, and engage with your professors, as they are a valuable resource and can provide guidance and support beyond the classroom. Additionally, attending student organization meetings and other events is an excellent way to meet new people, build connections, and broaden your horizons. Getting involved in extracurricular activities can help you build a well-rounded skill set that will serve you in your future endeavors.

I can get in-person training and get help while in person. Then I'm left to my own devices and can produce work to be reviewed when I come back. Critique is easier for me to understand in person because little nuances can get lost over text. I also have class right next to Sherman (where my internship is located) so it only made sense that I walk there after class!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I think what I've used to make the most impact so far is writing. Particularly for my upcoming post on the Career Center! I think many students gloss over what the Career Center has to offer until they're in the last month of their senior semester. The Career Center is such an amazing resource. It's the primary reason I have my current internship and the one I had this past summer! I also collect articles that can be of help to the student body. For example, topics like: stress management, eating healthy, dorm snack hacks (can't be too healthy), time management, and study tips. My main goal in whatever field I end up in is to help people. The Department of Professional Services helps me do that by allowing me room to be creative by using my skills to the fullest.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Don't be afraid to reach out on LinkedIn to people that work at the company you're applying for. Your connections matter and it's a good way to get info on what they use at their job. Whether it's software, workflows, or the work environment. After reaching out initially and getting feedback, tell them how following their advice turned out! It's a good way to interact with your connections organically (not every day or every month but often enough they don't forget you).

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

I think what helped me most was having an advisor specialized in helping Arts & Humanities majors. When I think of the Career Center, I think of people looking for jobs in economics, front and back end web development, cyber security, and so on. Basically, the STEM majors since UMBC is known as a STEM school. It's easy to fall into the trap of "oh you're a humanities major, you're not gonna have a job when you graduate." Thanks to my advisor I'm already on my way to having 2 years worth of experience before I graduate in the spring next year!

Check out this post on our social media platforms!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
Intern of the Week: Olaedo Onukwubiri!

When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

Ever since I got onto the UMBC campus, I knew I wanted to start research early and gather some experience in my major, so I began applying to every volunteer/research opportunity that came my way. Anything that had to deal with working in a lab, you always saw me there! It is hard to do this with no experience since I am a freshman, but through a lot of unsuccessful attempts, I finally got an interview and the rest is history. I was able to obtain my internship through UMBCworks and it was mainly due to my published resume and cover letter meetings with Ms. Susan Hindle.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Witnessing how research is executed in a lab and getting the chance to learn a new set of skills that are not particularly taught at my level. I also find it interesting to collaborate with others in terms of handling mice and performing other tasks, but I am also given independent work, which creates a sense of trust between my supervisor and me.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

It's a bit too early to say I have made an impact, given I just started in January. I can say that this internship has changed my mindset in which I have always been someone who is afraid of criticism, but this lab has taught me it's okay to make mistakes and it's okay to ask for help when needed because that is truly how you learn and become more successful in any of your endeavors.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

It truly depends on your goals, but I would say start making a vision board/plan early. If I didn't search for this opportunity, I would have never gained much experience at such a young level. Also, try to keep yourself busy, you should always be thinking of the next best thing even though it might seem so hard to achieve!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

My supervisor told me one of the reasons she hired me was because of that determination in me and my plan for my future. With this being said, sometimes skills do not matter, sometimes all it takes is that one person willing to help you out and see you grow.

Check out this post on our social media platforms!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
Intern of the Week: Bryan Castillo for BTA!

<Tagline>Check out Bryan's internship with the Whitney Museum!</Tagline>

Name: Bryan Castillo

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Whitney Museum of American Art

Position Title: Business Systems Intern

Major or Program: Business Technology Administration

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Spring 2022

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

As a Business Systems Intern, I'm in charge of daily updates to any membership information/data. I update members' address changes, personal information changes, and more. I also make sure to input any gifts given to the museum, gift of memberships, manage membership card information and more. My day-to-day responsibilities revolve around making sure membership information is accurate and is in sync throughout the many databases we use. I have to make sure the data I am inputting is accurate so not only our department can benefit from it, but the entire institution.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I found out about the position through a post on Linkedin by the museum. I submitted my application in late November. I was so excited to see this position because I already had experience working in museums but not in an IT related aspect. When I saw the position I knew I had to apply. Also, I love the Whitney's collection and I wish to move to New York after graduation. I heard back for an interview request in mid January, and was given a decision later that month. I began working on February 7th. It is a very competitive program and I was very happy to even be considered. I had one interview, but I felt I truly made a connection with the interviewers and I only wanted the position more after speaking to them.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have been fortunate enough to work on tasks that truly improve the membership experience. The team I work with is so dedicated to doing their best job because they know it doesn't just better the membership experience, but makes the museum a better institution. Database management is very important and crucial to the success of a museum. I've had the opportunity to meet with the senior staff, Museum Director, CFO, Chief Curator, and more.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Everyone I have met at the Whitney is passionate about art and is very skilled at their job. I feel the same is true about me. I bring a creative perspective and an eagerness to learn to a department or field of work where creatives don't often work. Having this outlook allows me to not think so analytically in every problem and wanting to apply what I've learned in my classes to my responsibilities.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Trying to enter the art museum field is incredibly hard because of competition and few institutions to apply to depending on your location. However, you can do it if you keep applying to positions and show employers you not only love art, but can apply your previous experiences and knowledge from classes to the work you may potentially do. Volunteering at a museum is a great way to introduce yourself. Always keep learning and ask those who work in the field any questions, people love to see someone who genuinely wants to learn.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

I get to work with so many people who are passionate about their work. That motivates me to continue to learn and work hard, so I too can work in art museums after college. I hope to make valuable contributions and better the experience of our members.

Check out this post on our social media platforms!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? The tasks I am doing change from day to day; some days I am helping with data collection during trials and setting up the computer to collect data from the MRI and sometimes I am entering information into the database and excel sheets. There is something new I learn how to do everyday like screening patients on the phone or mailing biological samples to labs to be processed. Everyday is exciting, wondering what new skill I will be learning.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the position through an email sent out by the Psychology department in the middle of last December. I submitted my application as soon as I read the email by emailing back my resume. I wrote my resume last year and have been adding on to it since, but when I first wrote it I went to a Resume Rescue session to get it reviewed and I was helped with phrasing and consistency throughout my resume.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Everyone at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center has been very welcoming and helpful but especially the research assistant I work with on a day to day basis. I have learned so much about data entry, collecting data using an MRI machine as well as the practical process of recording data and how the data we are recording is important to the study.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The work I am doing helps to add to the body of knowledge about schizophrenia. Every discovery starts with data collection.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Apply for anything and everything you're interested in. Don't be intimidated by the amount of work you may have to put in. When you love what you're doing it doesn't feel like work.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

By working with the Career Center I get to receive college credits (that I do not have to pay for) while doing something that I would have done for free, something I thoroughly enjoy and care deeply about.

Check out this post on our social media platforms!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
