Intern of the Week: Nathaniel Buechler at 98ROCK/WBAL 1090

<Tagline>Learn more about Nathaniel's summer experience!</Tagline>

    Nathaniel Buechler
Promotions and Digital Productions Intern at 98ROCK/WBAL 1090 in Baltimore, MD
Majors: Graphic Design/Political Science
Minors: International Affairs/German

Briefly describe your internship, including your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.

My goal is to assist the daily operations of both 98ROCK and WBAL 1090. At my internship, I not only utilize my technical abilities with media technology; I also have the job of representing both stations at events and other promotional appearances. Having a flexible schedule, my work shifts between every day of the week.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and what have you found most challenging?

My greatest challenge has been adapting to the fast-paced environment of the entertainment and news industries. I enjoy the mentorship from the professional expertise that both 98ROCK and WBAL 1090 have. The ability to network and understand the effort that is required for such a level of experience has been unique to my internship. As I recognize what skill set I need to develop to be competitive, I found that my mentors arrive at excellence in a disciplined and intentional manner.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another summer activity?

I usually spent my summer time taking classes. Whereas summer courses can provide the ability to understand the theory that is necessary to achieve success, the practical experience at my internship is unparalleled. I now am able to implement tasks at a higher success rate, which is equally if not more important than the planning portion of projects.

How do you see your summer work as meaningful? Has it given you a chance to work on issues or with communities that matter to you?

The meaning behind my summer work is great since I have the expertise of participating at one of the best radio stations in the country. My understanding of media and communicative practices allows me to make more intelligent decisions in a variety of ways. The most important decisions I can make with this knowledge will influence my ability to market to both large and small audiences.

How has your summer experience shaped the way you think about your power to impact the world?

Already I can see that my impact capacity is greater than it has ever been. I accomplished a major milestone in my marketing capacity in completing my personal website. By having mentors, I was able to bounce ideas and compile one sixth of my website. In addition, an entire facet of my skill set includes the production skills I learned while working at 98ROCK and WBAL 1090.
