Spring Semester 2013 URI Internship Opportunities with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks

Athletic Field Maintenance and Analysis
Investigate the location and usage pattern of athletic fields under the
jurisdiction of DRP; gather and organize data into a format usable for
GIS and mapping; work with park department staff to develop a basis for
better management and maintenance of field conditions. GIS skills
    required.

Produce Park Maps
Produce park maps for use both by the Permits Division and the general
public; the maps follow a design standard established by the department
and should identify park amenities, names and locations of athletics
fields and other park facilities. GIS mapping skills required.

Research of Pool Facilities, Cost Recovery and Pool Utilization Rates in Other Cities
Research pool systems in cities similar to Baltimore to determine how
they are structured in terms of their facilities, operations, cost, and
revenue generation; provide a written summary of the findings as part
of a public planning process to develop a plan for DRP aquatic
    facilities.

Marketing/Promotions for Park Activities
Assist with updating park events listings, social media sites, web site,
     and calendar of events; develop flyers and promotional materials;
research new avenues for promotion of department events, programs, and
    initiatives.

Green Events Program
Research the incentives employed to encourage “green” events on park
land in other cities; work with department staff to design a pilot
project in Baltimore parks; develop a program description, parameters,
    and “how to” brochure.

Food Waste Recycling
Establish protocols for recycling food waste and other material from
special events catering, including feasibility, number and type of
receptacles, removal schedule, outsourcing options, requirements for
on-site recycling and cost of implementation.

Cylburn Usage Survey
Data collection and analysis on visitors to the Cylburn Arboretum;
conduct visitor surveys; collect traffic data (pedestrian and vehicle)
and on such variables as daily usage, factors related to weather or
    season, and mode of transportation.

Urban Garden Site Selection
Locate vacant properties with potential to become urban gardens
following the existing City Farm model; the project will include
research into available vacant lots, site surveys and interaction with
community associations and churches to determine the suitability of
    sites and potential garden tenants.

Woody Plant Collection Mapping
Update existing maps of the living plant collections and gardens at
Cylburn Arboretum using an ESRI ArcGIS enabled computer; train
naturalist staff and volunteers with updated and editing skills.
    Requires familiarity with ArcView10 software with Publisher extension;
horticultural knowledge helpful but not essential.

Energy Audit of DRP Facilities
Continuation of an ongoing project to locate and conduct on-site review
of electric meters serving park and recreation facilities (park lights,
recreation centers, park buildings, etc.) and make recommendations on
follow-up actions to assure energy efficiency and accountability for the
department. Add these facilities to the department’s GIS-based list of
properties and map their location using GIS tools. GIS skills required.

Review and Implement a Plan for Sustainable Disposal of Biomass Waste
Continuation of an ongoing project to review and begin to implement the
plan for sustainable ways to dispose of the organic waste (dead trees,
wood chips, etc.) gathered in the department’s operations, based upon
best practices in other comparable jurisdictions and institutions and
with special consideration of entrepreneurial opportunities.

GIS Mapping for the TreeBaltimore Program
Continuation of an ongoing project to assist in building a data base
tracking system for the TreeBaltimore program and conduct research on
comparable municipalities on the relationship between the tree canopy,
the maintenance of existing trees, and the planting of new trees. GIS
    skills required.

Program Assistant for Outdoor Recreation Activities and Healthy Baltimore Initiative
Continuation of an ongoing project to assist in the development and
implementation of outdoor activity programs in Baltimore parks, with a
special emphasis upon assessment of their health benefits as part of the

Meet the Students: Rebecca Chhay (CS ’14)

Originally from Silver Spring, MD, Rebecca is a Computer Science major and an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the UMBC MAPLE (Multi-Agent Planning and Learning) Lab.

    About Rebecca

When did you become interested in Computer Science? High School.

What area of Computer Science interests you the most? (Truth be told) Job Security; Feeling like a strong independent woman "fighting" for her right to be a Computer Scientist.

What is your dream job? My dream job is being a dancer or a chorus teacher (my retirement plan). My CS dream job is one where I'd be able to write programs that will make a difference in the world (either in health, education, etc.) and be able to interact with people all over the world.

Hobbies? I like to sing when no one's around to hear, dance like no one's watching, and draw.

About being a CS major

What is your favorite professor/course and why? Professor Brian Dunnigan – English 100. Off-beat class, profound wisdom. He's a cool cat. Pro Tip: You get to read graphic novels in his class (my class read V for Vendetta, which is my favorite).

What is the best part about being a CWIT Affiliate? Being exposed to all the opportunities around me. I've had a narrow path set by my family upon graduating. Thanks to CWIT, GraceHopper, and my bosses, I've learned I can do anything with my Computer Science major. Not just sitting in a cubicle, but having jobs that will allow me to travel and interact with other passionate, fun-loving people.

Are you part of any on-campus clubs, organizations, teams, or labs? I'm affiliated with UMBC's Ultimate Frisbee club, Rock Climbing club, Swing Dance club, and UMBC's CWIT (Center for Women in Technology).

Have you done any undergraduate research? I'm an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the UMBC MAPLE (Multi-Agent Planning and Learning) Lab under CE21 (Computing Education for the 21st Century) and CS4HS (Computer Science for High School) projects. We are a planning project with the goal of increasing high school computer science expertise and statewide support in Maryland for computing education. I'm responsible for all aspects of event management, including site selection, contract negotiation, proposal planning, transportation arrangements, housing, and production of meeting materials for professional CS workshops, meetings, and industry dinners.

What advice would you give to incoming students? Procrastination is death. Everyone will tell you this so take the advice: "Start your projects early." Leave the last minute panic to us oldies. Think about it: Finish a project early, eliminate stress, and go out and enjoy your life. You'll definitely be a happier person.

What advice would you give to other females entering the field? You are not alone. Really. Being an affiliate for CWIT and an undergraduate research assistant, I've been able to network with many students and professors. There are professors that truly want to push you on the path of greatness. There are students that share the same mindset and know your pain (or at least understand them). Befriend them. If you see me, say "Hi." I'll be your friend.

About life at UMBC

What is the best part about campus life at UMBC? The quaint serenity of living on a moderately small community campus. UMBC is my home, my work place, and my school. My friends are my neighbors (mainly within walking distance), my coworkers are my colleagues, classmates, and friends, and my professors are my mentors, advisers, and bosses. I have the freedom to do what I want when I want all in one little loop. Props to Campus Police and UMBC's general vicinity for making campus feel safe and cozy.

What is your favorite spot on campus? I would tell you but that would spoil its serenity.

Where can you get the best coffee/lunch/ food or beverage of choice? I'm a big fan of Fresh Fusions, Wild Greens, and Admin for healthy choices. Au Bon Pain and the Library Cafe have some pretty good smoothies. (Order a Strawberry Smoothie with whipped cream. Do it. I dare you.)

Paid Summer Policy Intern Program in California

<Tagline>Focus on Fiscal and Policy Analysis</Tagline>

The California Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) is seeking
applications for its Fiscal and Policy Analyst (FPA) position and summer
internship program. This letter provides information on the LAO, the
advertised positions, and the application process. Additional
information can be found on our website at www.lao.ca.gov

The Legislative Analyst’s Office

The LAO is the nonpartisan fiscal and policy advisor to the
California Legislature. Its mission is to reduce the cost of state
government and/or to increase its efficiency. Established in 1941, the
LAO is the oldest office of its type in the country, and maintains a
national reputation for its nonpartisanship and its high-quality staff
and analyses. The office maintains a professional, collegial work
environment that strives for an appropriate work/life balance.

The office does the following three main types of work for the Legislature:

· Analyzes
the Governor’s annual budget proposal, testifies at legislative
hearings, and conducts legislative oversight throughout the year.

· Responds to requests from Members of the California Legislature on programs and finances.

· Produces independent, self-generated reports to assist the Legislature in addressing the major fiscal and policy issues facing California.
For example, we have recently published reports on (1) the impact of
federal health care reform on California, (2) the insolvency of
California’s Unemployment Insurance Fund, and (3) using distance
education to increase college access and efficiency.

Positions Advertised

Fiscal and Policy Analyst.
The FPA’s primary responsibility is to be the LAO’s expert in a
    specific policy area. Policy areas are: State and Local Finance;
Education; Health and Human Services; and Corrections, Transportation,
and Environment. A complete description of the FPA position can be found
     at:

http://www.lao.ca.gov/laoapp/Careers/job_announcements/general_job_info.aspx.

Summer Internships. The LAO operates a 12-week summer
internship program that provides a rigorous analytical experience for
individuals who (1) have completed the first year of a two-year graduate
program that provides both a quantitative and policy analytical
curriculum and (2) are interested in becoming a full-time FPA after
graduation. The internship pays $2,650 per month. Additional information
on the program is available at: www.lao.ca.gov/laoapp/Careers/summer_internships.aspx.

Application Process

Interested
individuals should e-mail a cover letter, resume, and three references
(names, phone numbers, and relationships only, not letters of reference)
to lao.employment@lao.ca.gov. The deadline for receipt of applications is December 21, 2012. We
will respond to all applicants by January 11, 2013. As part of this
year’s recruiting process, we will conduct a limited number of
on-campus interviews in January and February 2013.

We
will review the resumes to determine which schools to visit for
on-campus, first-round interviews. The decision will be based on the
quality and perceived “fit” of the applicants as indicated by the
resumes and whether there are enough interested and qualified applicants
to warrant a visit. We will also conduct phone or Skype interviews with
those selected for interviews from schools that we will not visit this
    year.

A second round of interviews, if appropriate, will take place in
Sacramento in March 2013. Decisions and offers will be made no later
than April 2013. Typically, new hires begin work at the LAO in August or
     September.

The LAO anticipates hiring from six to eight FPAs during the
recruiting cycle and three or four summer interns. At this time, we do
not know what policy areas will be vacant when new hires report next
summer and fall. Consequently, we are not recruiting for specific policy
areas. Our assignment process takes into account existing vacancies,
the needs of the office, and the interests of the new hires.

I look forward to hearing from you. If you have any questions, please contact me at sarah.kleinberg@lao.ca.gov.

<Tagline>8 ways to keep your internship from driving you crazy</Tagline>

Write it all down to stay organized.

You have a full plate — there’s no doubt about that. Between your part-time job, unpaid internship, after-school commitments, social life and schoolwork — you have zero time to yourself. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed, stressed, gain weight or get anxious. I wanted to provide a few tips to make sure your internship doesn’t drive you crazy. I spoke to my interns and my @internqueenTwitter followers about their quick fixes to make sure they don’t go nuts!

1. When the internship is done, stop interning. Today, there is a notion that the more hours you work, the more effective you are. This couldn’t be further from the truth. You want to work efficiently. It’s not about the hours you put in, it’s about the work that gets done. When your internship hours are done, wrap up your work, make sure you are organized and move on to the next thing on your to-do list.

2. Initiate “me” time. Somewhere in your schedule you must have some time to yourself. Try your best to leave at least 30 minutes every day where nothing is scheduled. This can be in the morning, afternoon or at night. Let yourself zone out, lay down, meditate, go for a walk — whatever you need to do to relax.

3. Make exercise a priority. Whenever I get stressed, this is my go-to solution. I’ve found that working out consistently makes me less stressed. It’s as if I know that I’ll have time to work out the feelings of anxiety at the gym or at the track later that day — my body has become accustomed to it.

4. Change your soundtrack. Throughout the day I find myself listening to “pump-up” music. This might be while I’m in the car, running, getting ready or even while I’m studying or researching. I’ve found that switching it up and putting together a relaxation playlist really helps me change my mood and loosen up.

5. Always leave time for organizing. Be very aware of your time at the internship. Always give yourself 20 minutes at the end (if possible) to wrap up your daily tasks, update your internship coordinator, file emails and update your to-do lists. Don’t let your work get sloppy and all over the place.

6. Mix tea into your routine. Our bodies are so used to running on coffee that we constantly refill and overdrink the substance. Try mixing things up by adding some tea into your day. For example, every day after 4 p.m. when I need that next pick-me-up, I go for tea. This makes me feel more relaxed and changes my mood. It still provides that energy boost as well.

7. Stop committing things to memory. Newsflash! You will forget. Write everything down that you need to do — personally and professionally. No matter how smart you think you are, you will forget something. If you know you have everything written down it will make you feel much more calm and collected.

8. Use a calendar system. In my book, ALL WORK, NO PAY I talk about creating your calendar system. It’s important to treat yourself like a professional and write down all of your commitments so you don’t overbook. This will help you stay organized. Every morning the first thing you do should be to check the calendar. Include notices regarding when tests are happening and when bills need to be paid.
