10:30-12:00 Monday, March 11, 2013, ITE 325b, UMBC

With increase in usage of the Internet, there has been an exponential increase in the use of online social media on the Internet. Websites like Facebook, Google+, YouTube, Orkut, Twitter and Flickr have changed the way Internet is being used. There is a dire need to investigate, study and characterize privacy and security on online social media from various perspectives (computational, cultural, psychological). Real world scalable systems need to be built to detect and defend security and privacy issues on online social media. This talk will give you a preview of what we do at PreCog in the area of PSOSM. I will describe briefly some of the cool ongoing projects that we have: ChaMAILeon, PhishAri, Twit-Digest, U2P2, and OCEAN. Much of our research work is made available for public use through tools or online services. Our work derives techniques from Data Mining, Text Mining, Statistics, Network Science, Public Policy, Complex networks, Human Computer Interaction, and Psychology.

In this talk, I will focus on the following: (1) Twit-Digest is a tool to extract intelligence from Twitter which can be useful to security analysts. Pro-cursor to this work is published at PSOSM 2012, this work also obtained second best award at IBM ICARE 2012. (2) OCEAN: Open source Collation of eGovernment data and Networks. Here, we show how publicly available information on Government services can be used to profile citizens in India. This work obtained the Best Poster Award at Security and Privacy Symposium at IIT Kanpur, 2013. (3) Privacy in India: Attitudes and Awareness V 2.0 U2P2, this is one of the largest ever done privacy study in India. This has been in media recently; if you are interested search for #privacyindia12 on Twitter. This work obtained the third Best Poster Award at Security and Privacy Symposium at IIT Kanpur, 2013.

Ponnurangam Kumaraguru ("PK") Assistant Professor, is currently the Hemant Bharat Ram Faculty Research Fellow at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi, India.
Intern of the Week: Uvonne Andoh at UMBC for IS

<Tagline>Learn about exciting IS work UMBC has to offer!</Tagline>

    Name: Uvonne Andoh
Internship, Co-op or Research Site: University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Information Systems)
Location of the Organization (City, State): Baltimore, MD
Title of Your Position: Research Assistant
Major(s)/Minor(s): Management of Aging Services/ pre-physical therapy
Expected Graduation Date (Month & Year): 2014

    1. Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research or service-learning position/assignment, including your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.

What I do at my internship site includes Learning fundamentals of Assistive Technology and getting hands on experience working with older adults. I have also learned how to design and build 3D prototypes for a 3D printer to explore the possibility of older adults building their own assistive technologies.

2. What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company and what have you found most challenging?

I have enjoyed learning 3D modeling and how to use a 3D printer, preparing materials for a focus group with older adults on rapid prototyping and helping run a focus group. I have also enjoyed the assistance gotten from my supervisor Amy Hurst and other students and working as a team. What I found most challenging at first was conducting a “focus group”, I was really nervous and did not know what to expect, but being able to work with Galina Madjaroff I learned a lot from her on how to conduct a focus group with our targeted population being the older adults.

3. What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another summer activity?

I have gained the advantage of networking, being a leader and being able to see what my day-to-day of working in my field will be like. Not only do I know how to use a 3D printer, I have been able to design my own object and build it as well as teaching others who have no idea about what 3D printing is and offering a little bit of tutoring on how to use 3D printers.

4. How do you see your summer work as meaningful? Has it given you a chance to work on issues or with communities that matter to you?

I see my summer work as meaningful because it has made me to master my skills giving me the advantage on understanding what I would be doing in the future in my field and also being able to work with others as a team. My internship has given me the chance to visit CharlesTown resident home and conducting a focus group, presenting and explaining the research I have helped with here at UMBC.

5. How has your summer experience shaped the way you think about your power to impact the world? This might involve skills you’ve gained, information you’ve learned, mentors you’ve connected with, or projects you’ve completed.

My summer experience has shaped me in a way of really understanding the needs of older adults and providing them with assistive technology to help them with their day to day activities. So many times people tend to see older adults as only handicap and incapable of taking care of themselves, but what they don’t know is that they are capable of doing the activities younger people do and are more aware on how to use the latest technologies out there such as Iphones and Ipads. Connecting with people who are interested in incorporating technologies in older adult’s life and me being involved in research has made me have the passion for helping older adults even more.

Paid Summer On-Campus Internships with JCET

Multiple paid summer research internships are available now in UMBCworks with the UMBC Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology.

Check out opportunities like:

Climate Change Research
With climate change on the forefront of political and economic debates, it is up to scientists to fill in the gaps in our collective understanding of climate and to be able to effectively communicate those findings to a public audience. Such research supports the factual elements in the ongoing debate. One key area of interest (and uncertainty) is the measurement of precipitation using satellite remote sensing techniques. Precipitation, especially snowfall, is notoriously difficult to measure on a global basis using space-based instruments. The summer student would be actively involved in examining microwave remote sensing data obtained during snowfall events, both recent and historic. The basic task for the student will be to get a handle on how well our remote sensing methods are working towards improving the general knowledge of falling snow estimation. There will be a data analysis aspect to this work and a communications aspect to it as well.

Vegetation Spectral Bio-Indicators of Photosynthetic Efficiency
Current ecosystem carbon exchange models are limited by a lack of quantitative information on the spatial and temporal variability in photosynthetic uptake, an important physiological and ecological function. To use remote sensing to measure photosynthetic rates we need to develop connections between leaf physiological responses and spectral optical properties. In the proposed research the student will process field measurements of both spectral reflectance and photosynthesis of leaves and plants, examining how both vary diurnally and seasonally, as well as the effects of incident light levels (sun versus shade). During the summer of 2013 measurements will be collected at field sites in the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center located near Goddard Space Flight Center. Students will spend their time working in our laboratory, and also making limited further spectral measurements. Students will be responsible for processing the data and developing relationships between the leaf spectral characteristics and rates of photosynthesis. They would need to have their own transportation. Students will need to be able to work methodically and independently, processing leaf samples for chemical analysis and using MATLAB and/or statistics packages for data organization and analysis.

Evaluation of the operational precipitation products using independent rain gauges
This internship intends to evaluate the operational precipitation products using independent rain gauges in mid-Atlantic region. there are 17 rain gauges in the Southern Delmarva Peninsula. The internship will include the analysis of the data, creating the rainfall products, running rainfall statistics. The computer programming skills are required for the completion of the program.
Expected outcomes: Both oral and poster presentations are expected. The intern should report daily progress and expect to work 8 hours per working day.
Computer Skills: FORTRAN or C++ and/or IDL is recommended. The student may do all the calculations using Matlab.

STEM Education Intern and Spanish Translation of STEM Education materials
An insufficient number of American students are choosing careers in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) to fill the available jobs. One approach to encourage more students to participate in STEM activities is to provide the curriculum in Spanish. Students interested in working with JCET faculty on STEM materials for educators and students and/or translating English curriculum into Spanish should apply. The most important qualifications are motivation, organization and punctuality.

All positions are available on UMBCworks: Apply by March 31, 2013 for best consideration.
