Inspiration from Mother Nature for cancer therapy

<Tagline>Dr. Pan's research explores bee venom</Tagline>

"A pioneering breakthrough may come from chemist and bioengineer Dipanjan Pan, who is currently looking into a melittin-based cancer therapy with his lab at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Amid calls for safer, more successful cancer treatments, Pan inspected toad, scorpion and bee venom for answers. “The philosophy of my research is biomimetics, or bringing inspiration from Mother Nature,” he says.

These animal poisons include toxins like melittin, which is considered a host defense peptide. Most multicellular organisms have these peptides to ward off disease, including humans, but only some creatures weaponize them in the form of powerful venom. Funnily enough, this toxin could end up saving human lives.

And it isn’t particularly difficult to create synthetic melittin in a lab, Pan says, which is optimal for drug development due to its convenience, quality control, and relative safety compared to crude natural sources.

The real challenge: designing an effective delivery method that squashes cancer growth but leaves surrounding cells healthy. Chemotherapy, for example, commonly causes patients to lose their hair because it damages follicles in the process. “That has been the key bottleneck in targeted [cancer] therapy,” he adds. “It boils down to: How can we make these venom peptides more selective and targeted to the cancer cell? It’s like finding a needle in a haystack.”

An Introduction to Inertial Navigation From the Perspective of State Estimation

Abstract

Inertial navigation determines the position and attitude of a vehicle using only accelerometers and rate gyros by integrating kinematic relations. Although modern navigation systems combine inertial navigation and the Global Positioning System (GPS) in the state estimation framework to improve the accuracy of position and attitude, inertial navigation remains essential for applications where either GPS is not accessible, such as under water and under ground, as well as where GPS can be jammed or spoofed. This article focuses on strapdown inertial navigation, where the sensors are hard-mounted to the vehicle, and thus rotate as the vehicle rotates. Within this context and under simplifying assumptions, this article investigates the relevance of state estimation techniques to inertial navigation in order to highlight the special challenges of this technology. The goal of this article is to provide a foundation for the basic concepts of inertial navigation in a form that is suitable for students and instructors in systems and control.

Emerging Leaders is a day long experience for students who are interested in developing their leadership capacity and learning more about the Social Change Model (SCM) of Leadership Development. SCM at it’s core, approaches leadership as a purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that results in positive social change.

The Social Change Model sees leadership as purposeful, collaborative, and a values-driven process. Titles or positions are not needed in order to be a leader. Leaders work to improve the groups and communities they are part of. Through this approach, anyone can be a leader, because “leaders” are those who want to make a difference. This kind of collaborative process means that groups must have trust, which requires that group members act in ways that are consistent with their own beliefs and values as well as the group’s goals. Food will be provided at this event.

This program will take place in-person at The Commons 331 on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021 from 10:30am – 3:30pm.

Intern of the Week: Daniel Cleaver for Computer Engineering!

<Tagline>Check out Daniel's internship with BGE!</Tagline>

    Name: Daniel Cleaver

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE)

Position Title: Emerging Techlologies & Innovation Co-op

    Major or Program: Computer Engineering

    Current Class Level: Junior

Work Term: Spring 21, Summer 21, Fall 21

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I developed a dashboard for BGE's innovation team, introduced time savings, improved task efficiency, and most importantly, gained new insights into our program. I participated in engaging employee training events and worked hands-on with BGE/Exelon's innovation teams.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I received an email announcement from the UMBC Career Center that BGE was looking for a Spring 21 co-op, and they were specifically interested in undergraduates in my field. I was not planning to co-op during that semester, but I decided to apply anyway.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoyed learning how to use Microsoft Power BI and being able to immediately apply those skills to a real-world project.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I built, and continue to update, a dashboard that my team uses throughout the day. This has improved our process, and even started conversations with BGE's sister utility companies about similar efforts.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Go for it! Be flexible with job descriptions and assignments, don't feel bad for not being an expert overnight, and remember you are there to learn.

UPDATE!!! Zareen's Hazara family members fleeing Afghanistan

<Tagline>Supporting Zareen and Ali to support others in danger</Tagline>

UPDATE!!!! THANK YOU to everyone who donated and shared! You all are amazing. We've raised enough to cover ALL 8 of the humanitarian parole applications. I'm going to raise the fundraising limit to and see if we can't start raising funds for some of the visa applications and plane tickets for Zareen and Ali's family members.

-----------------------------------

Zareen and Ali are dear friends and colleagues of many of us and we know that they work tirelessly to advocate for the rights of people from their country of origin, Afghanistan. Both Zareen and Ali come from an ethnic minority group in Afghanistan, the Hazara, who have been brutally targeted by extremists; Zareen has written extensively on the issue for Ms. Magazine and other outlets.

At the present, Zareen and Ali are working to help bring 8 family members from Pakistan here to Baltimore. These family members have already survived harrowing ordeals to leave Afghanistan. They left Afghanistan with nothing. Zareen and Ali are the main financial supporters of them right now. While Zareen and Ali have been able to get pro-bono legal counsel for these family members, they want to file Humanitarian Parole forms to bring them here to the United states. The fee for each applicant is $575.00. Right now, They need help to cover the fees to file the Humanitarian Parole applications and for them to get visas. Eventually, each of the 8 family members will need a plane ticket to come to Baltimore and some support locally while they get settled and find work. All 8 of the family members are in danger because of their ethnic minority status and several were also being targeted because of aid work they engaged in while in Afghanistan.

Let's show Zareen and Ali our care and support by helping them to raise the funds they need to safely bring their family members here.
