When and how did you find out that you could do independent research work as a UMBC undergraduate?
Before coming to UMBC, I had heard on several different occasions that undergraduate research was very big on campus. As a Meyerhoff scholar, I was encouraged to find a mentor and carry out my own research.

How did you find a mentor and decide on a project? How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
I had one of my teachers my as a mentor, and I requested to work with her because I enjoyed her in class and found her research interesting. We chose a project for me that would fit well into the lab's current work while still giving me enough independence to work on my own.

What academic background did you have before you started on this research?
Before starting my research I had taken the chemistry classes needed to have a basic understanding of our research. However, in my more advanced courses I am constantly learning things that apply to the research I am doing now.

How did you learn about applying for the Undergraduate Research Award? Was the application hard? Did your mentor help you?
My mentor suggested I apply for the URA. The application was not difficult, but my mentor did help me condense the scope of the whole project to the short application.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
The teachers at UMBC are very passionate about their research. If you are honestly interested in what they are doing, most people will be very happy to talk to you and maybe even let you join their lab.

What are your career goals?
I would like to pursue an MD/PhD degree upon graduation.

Read more about Kelin's research, “Synthesis of C-nucleosides and Their Biological Implications” at the link below.

CSEE processor Samuel J. Lomonaco is giving a talk on his research on quantum computing as part of the Joint Quantum Institute seminar series sponsored by UMCP and NIST. The talk will be given at 12:30pm Monday 17 October, in room 1201 in the Physics building at College Park.

Quantum knots and quantum braids: Their possible application to superfluid vortices and to topological quantum computing in optical lattices.

In this talk, we show how to reconstruct knot theory in such a way that it is intimately related to quantum physics. In particular, we give a blueprint for creating a quantum system that has the dynamic behavior of a closed knotted piece of rope moving in 3-space. Within this framework, knot invariants become physically measurable quantum observables, knot moves become unitary transformations, with knot dynamics determined by the Schroedinger equation. The same approach can also be applied to the theory of braids. Toward the end of the talk, we look at possible applications to superfluid vortices and to topological quantum computing in optical lattices.

Apply for the Bits & Bytes 2012 Planning Committee by 10/31

<Tagline>Encourage young girls to pursue IT & Engineering majors!</Tagline>

Bits & Bytes is an annual outreach program sponsored by CWIT and Northrop Grumman which invites ~30 high school junior girls to UMBC for an overnight stay and design competition. The next event will be held over President's Day weekend on February 19 & 20, 2012. Visit www.cwit.umbc.edu/hs/bitsbytes or see attached flyer for more information.

ALL STUDENTS are invited to apply! Serving on a planning committee for an event of this scale is a great
professional development opportunity and will help you gain unique
skills to add to your resume. Also...it will be fun!

In previous years we have received anywhere from 60-90 applications form
high school girls wanting to participate, and we have been able to have
major impacts on the lives of young women through the program. Data collected
from pre- and post-event evaluations of the 2011 Bits and Bytes program participants show the
    program’s impact:

enthusiasm
for the field of engineering or IT = 82% before, 100% after.

knowledge
about opportunities available in IT or engineering = 24% before, 88% after.

confidence about entering an engineering or IT career = 71% before, 94%
    after.

knowledge of support for women in engineering or IT = 30% before,
    88% after.

confidence about fitting into the college environment = 70% before,
    100% after.

Here is a quote from one of the B&B 2011 participants: "The competition...made me
more confident about aspects of the Engineering field and my future potential.
This program also made me able to visualize myself as an actual college
student, still the UMBC students were approachable and ‘real’ with us.”

If you are interested in being on the committee, please complete the application here: http://goo.gl/93LRi

Serving on the committee will require attendance at planning committee meetings. Most of the committee meetings will be on-campus in January during winter break, but there will be 1-2 planned for the end of the Fall semester and 1-2 planned for the beginning of the Spring semester before the event in February. Specific meeting dates will be scheduled at times convenient for everyone once the committee has been formed.

Serving on the committee also requires that you are available after about 3pm on Sunday, February 19th, as well as between your classes until about 6pm on Monday, February 20th to assist with program implementation.

Submit your application by October 31st for best consideration. Email kglasser@umbc.edu with any questions.

Leonardo DiCaprio is supposedly interested in playing Turing and is "chasing the project" and Ron Howard is rumored to be interested in in directing.
Turing is the famous English mathematician who made significant contributions to computer science in the 30s and 40s, including formalizations of computing and algorithms with the Turing machine and early work on Artificial Intelligence. During World War II he was was also a senior member of the British codebreaking and cryptanalysis group at Bletchley Park that broke the codes for the German Enigma machine.

Turing was prosecuted by the British government in 1952 for being a homosexual which is thought to be the cause of his apparent suicide by cyanide poisoning in 1954. In 2009, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologized on behalf of the British government for the way in which Turing was treated after the war.
