Researcher of the Week: Kathryn Henry

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

How did you learn about the McNair Scholars Program at UMBC?
My Sondheim Public Affairs adviser Delana Gregg told me about the program and encouraged me to apply. Her support really made the difference and I am so thankful that she thought of me for this!

Did the McNair program help you find your research project for this summer?
The McNair program has provided everything I could possibly need for researching this summer. They helped me find a mentor, draft a proposal, design my project, and they've also provided me with a place to stay and conduct research. In addition, they've helped me out with the cost of food, so I'm free to spend time working on my project rather than trying to make money by working another job in addition to my research duties.

How are you conducting this research?
I'm doing a literature review and some analyses of my own. In addition, I hope to do some surveys and patient data analysis in the future.

What has been the most interesting or unexpected thing about your research?
Learning that peptides from wheat (gluten) and dairy (casein) can act almost exactly like opiates in the brain was very interesting. In addition, the finding out that anorexic patients experience less intestinal permeability and have better immune function than normal controls was really surprising.

What academic background did you have before you started this research?
I'm a Political Science and Public Administration major, so at first glance this research project would appear to be way outside of my field. As someone who's interested in public health, however, it was concerning to me that so little research has been done linking the incidence of eating disorders to food and lifestyle habits. Eating disorders, obesity, and chronic disease have all been on the rise since the early 1900s, and this trend matches very nicely with increases in food processing and sugar consumption in the U.S. diet. I've conducted original research before and have a pretty extensive background knowledge of my subject from previous research endeavors, so I felt confident that, with some advice from professionals, I could take this on.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
Talk to people and professionals who are studying what you are. I tend to get really into reading reports and my ability to produce written work often slows because of this. There is so much to learn that it's easy to get off track and never end up writing everything. Talking to people reminds you of your goals and gives you new ideas when you're stuck. Networking is never a bad thing, and I've found that professionals generally really like to help undergraduates who are passionate about what they're studying.

What are your careers goals and how does this research fit into your goals?
I'm actually planning to attend medical school after college and pursue a naturopathic degree. An N.D. is similar to an M.D.; both have the same basic sciences as the core of their educational curriculum, but I like that N.D. is more systems-based and holistic. Naturopathy is based on the idea that the body is capable of self-correcting disease (often without drugs) if given the right support. It's focused a lot on educating and empowering the patient and preventing diseases before they start. I think we will see a huge increase in popularity as the skepticism around the practice decreases and people being to understand the value of this approach. The accredited medical schools that offer this degree are pretty legitimate and I've actually found that N.D.s are now training M.D.'s regarding topics like endocrinology, adrenal function, herbal supplementation etc. My research on this topic takes a functionalist approach, which means it will fit right in with what I'll learn in medical school. I plan to continue this research well into my adult life. I think the issues I'm hitting on are really important and will need to be publicized in some way.

Read more about Kathryn's research, “Considering Intestinal Permeability in Eating Disorder Treatment” at the link below.

UMBC Alum Entrepreneurs are Seeking Entrepreneural Interns

<Tagline>Paid Social Media/Marketing Intern for BeerGivr.com</Tagline>

When you
describe an event in your life to friends or strangers, do they hang on
your every word? Do you have a million apps installed on your phone? Can
you use social media as a professional tool in addition to tagging your
friend as a zombie? And finally, are you 21 or older?

BeerGivr.com,
the best way to send a real beer to a friend through mobile technology,
is seeking interns to support our communication and expansion efforts.
We need team members that have an outgoing and enthusiastic personality
to help us build the BeerGivr brand and expand its footprint in the
Baltimore/Maryland/DC area. Grades can be a factor in the hiring
decision but we are more interested in people with street smarts, who
are not afraid to sell ice to Eskimos, and are willing to engage random
people in a bar to talk up BeerGivr.

This is a brand new startup.
Seriously, less than a couple months old but growing fast. Future team
members will work with the BeerGivr team on anything and everything.
    Some tasks may revolve around:

Define
and execute distinct strategies to increase our market
footprint for each social media tool like Facebook, Twitter, and
    YouTube.

Is
it more cost effective or strategic to pursue bar X instead of
Y? Or, identifying market potential of Towson vs. DC when allocating
    future resources?

You will talk with Managers/Owners of restaurants and conduct meetings to sign them onto the BeerGivr network

Generate short videos of customers and owners using the BeerGivr product or providing honest feedback

BeerGivr
is a fun product but we are not looking for a "paper pusher" or "get me
a coffee" intern. Future team members will hit the ground running, make
a difference, and own it. Can you handle that? Would you like a comp any
called BeerGivr on your resume? You should apply and we should talk.

APPLY via UMBCworks TODAY or send your resume to Christine Routzahn at The Shriver Center (routzahn@umbc.edu). The position will pay a stipend of $750 for 120 hours of work over the course of the spring 2012 semester. Open to all majors.

Professor Ouri Wolfson
University of Illinois at Chicago

1:00pm Friday 2 December 2011, ITE 227

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have been in research and development since the 70's but their impact so far has been relatively small. In this talk I will argue that this is about to change, and that these systems will soon revolutionize the way we commute. I will describe research issues and Information Technology approaches related to ITS. I will focus on urban transportation, and discuss novel applications enabled by mobile wireless technologies. Such applications have the potential to improve safety, mobility, environmental impact, and energy efficiency of urban transportation. The applications are based on vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, and they epitomize ITS efforts currently undertaken throughout the world, particularly the IntelliDrive initiative of the US Department of Transportation. I will also relate these efforts to our NSF-sponsored IGERT PhD program in Computational Transportation Science.

Ouri Wolfson is the Richard and Loan Hill Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He is the sole founder of Mobitrac, a venture-funded high-tech startup that was acquired by Fluensee Co. in 2006.

Ouri Wolfson authored over 180 publications, and holds seven patents. He is a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a University of Illinois Scholar for 2009, and serves on the editorial boards of several journals. He co-authored three award winning papers, served as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Association of Computing Machinery during 2001-2003, and participated in numerous conferences as a keynote speaker, general chairman, program committee chairman or member, tutorial presenter, session chairman, and panelist. Most recently he was the keynote speaker at the Mobilware 2010 Conference, and the general chair of the 17th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems (ACM GIS 2009) . His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), NATO, US Army, NASA, the New York State Science and Technology Foundation, Hughes Research Laboratories, Informix Co., Accenture Co., and Hitachi Co.

Wolfson’s main research interests are in database systems, distributed systems, and mobile/pervasive computing. Before joining the University of Illinois he has been on the computer science faculty at the Technion, Columbia University, and a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs.
