UMBC is a host for the 2012 Global Game Jam which takes place this coming weekend, January 27-29. This is a 48 hour event, where teams from around the world work to develop a complete game over one weekend. The first year had 54 sites in 23 countries. The second year had 124 sites in 34 countries. Last year was up to 169 sites. The UMBC site is open to participants at all skill levels and affiliations. For the rest of the weekend, each team will work to build a brand new computer game around the theme. At 3:00pm on Sunday, the final games must be uploaded and from 3-5, the group will review what was accomplished over the weekend.

Summer Research Opportunity in Biophysics

<Tagline>University of Michigan, Ann Arbor</Tagline>

The University of Michigan Biophysics
Summer Research for Undergraduates Program (REU) provides selected
undergraduate students from around the United States an opportunity to conduct ten weeks of summer research with some of the country's leading biophysicists. The program is conducted in concert with the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program and is supported by funds from the National Science Foundation.
REU students have the opportunity to participate in a biophysics laboratory utilizing various techniques such as x-ray crystallography and NMR.

The Biophysics Program at the University of Michigan is one of very
few standalone biophysics programs in the US and has a long tradition of
interdisciplinary research. Since Biophysics is extremely
intellectually diverse, our aim is not only to provide research
experience in a subfield of the discipline, but to also provide an
overview of state-of-the-art research in the field, and the experimental
and theoretical/computational methods and techniques that are commonly
    used.

Summer Research in Investigative Biotechnology

Western Kentucky University seeks talented science students to participate in its summer National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in investigative biotechnology (May 29-August 3, 2012). Our preference is for rising juniors and seniors (younger students with research experience will be considered), who have completed core courses in the science curriculum at their home institutions and have demonstrated a curiosity and passion for science. We especially encourage applications from students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education in the biological sciences.

Twelve faculty members in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics and Computer Science will serve as mentors to accepted students. These students will gain much. Academically, students will be trained in research techniques, participate in exciting research (students can chose from over seventeen projects), and gain valuable presentation skills. Additionally, students will benefit from a series of workshops exploring ethics and preparing students to apply for and succeed in graduate school. Practically, students will receive a stipend of $500 per week, free housing, meal and travel allowances, and lab supplies.

REU Benefits

Develop through hands-on work and the guidance
of experienced researchers an in-depth understanding of the core
    research skills in Biotechnology.

Learn about the responsible conduct of research and ethical issues in the biological sciences.
