How long have you worked in the Women's Center?
Since September of 2010

Why do you think the Women's Center is important?
The Women’s Center offers so many women’s-related resources and programming, and provides a safe space for women (and men) of all backgrounds to visit and in which they feel comfortable. The Center is a place many visitors have meaningful conversations, whether that was the purpose of their visit or not (many times they wind up staying longer than originally intended). Also, I can’t stress enough the importance of our lactation/meditation room, which has allowed many mothers (including faculty and staff) to comfortably pump during their days spent on campus. Balancing a career (whether academic or professional) and being a mom is not easy and knowing that we can offer support to make this transition easier for new mothers is important to me.

What is your favorite thing about the Women's Center?
My absolute favorite thing about the Women’s Center is the sense of community one feels immediately upon visiting us. I’ve not only experienced this myself, but have heard many others express it, as well. Once you walk through these doors, you immediately feel the positive and nurturing vibes from the Women’s Center community. Also, the Returning Women’s Support Group rocks!

What have you learned from working in the Women's Center?
I’ve learned what a sense of community means to me and to others. I’ve often heard, especially among returning women students and mothers, that they never really felt a part of the UMBC community until they visited the Women’s Center to take advantage of our resources. Upon experiencing this myself, as well as hearing it from many others, I understand and take much more seriously the importance of feeling a sense of community within an academic setting.

Computer Science for the rest of us

An article in the April 1 edition of New York Times, Computer Science for the Rest of Us, mentions UMBC and Marie desJardins. It describes the idea that our notion of literacy should be exapanded to include an understanding of computational processes and that all college graduates should know the basics of computational thinking.

The article discusses a number of colleges and universities that have introduced new courses to address this challenge, offering non-computing majors a chance to understand how computation can be used to analyze and organizing data, model ideas and systems, evaluate theories and simulate processes in the real world. Often this can be done without trying to train students to use conventional general purpose programming languages like Python or Java.

Professor desJardins was mentioned for her work at UMBC on revamping CMSC 100 to be just such a course.

"Marie desJardins, a computer science professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, says her department uses Scratch in its 'Introduction to Computers and Programming' course, in which students can try a few basic concepts. About 25 percent of the semester is spent on programming.

Explaining why Scratch is used at the college level, she says that all students arrive on campus having taken high school classes in English, math, biology and so on, but that many have not taken a computer science class."

It is now the time to nominate yourself for SWE leadership! It is an

Please note that we are adding two new positions: Membership Chair and

define what your responsibilities are and work with the SWE leadership
team. Depending on the interest in the president and vice president
positions, I am very interested in mentoring a new SWE leadership team
of current sophomores or freshman so please do take this chance to run
for a position. I will stay on as a "past president" and help plan and

This seminar presents a new approach to unsupervised classification for multispectral imagery. It first uses a Gaussian pyramid multi- resolution technique to reduce image size from which the pixel purity index (PPI) is implemented to find regions of interest (ROIs) with PPI counts greater than zero. These PPI-found samples are further used as support vectors for a support vector machine (SVM) to classify data. The resulting SVM-classified data samples are further processed by a newly designed iterative Fishers linear discriminant analysis (IFLDA), which implements FLDA in an iterative manner to refine classification results. The experimental results show the proposed approach has great promise in unsupervised classification.

Shih-Yu Chen received the BSEE degree from Da-Yeh University in 2005, and the MSEE degree from National Chung Hsing University in 2010. He is currently a PhD (EE) student at UMBC. Mr. Chen's research interest includes medical image, remote sensing image, and vital-sign signal processing.

Host: Prof. Joel M. Morris

Rising sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students interested in cognitive radios and wireless networking might want to take a look at Virginia Tech’s Cognitive Communications Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).

This summer, the program will enlist ten undergraduate students for a nine-week research program that explores problems related to software defined radios, cognitive radios, wireless networks, wireless communication circuits, and human factors engineering in communications. Students will be mentored by Virginia Tech faculty members, and will participate in weekly research meetings and informal brown-bag lunches to discuss research progress.

Each student will be awarded a $4,500 stipend, a housing and food allowance up to $2,000, and travel assistance up to $600. Eligible undergraduates must be majoring in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science, and hold an overall G.P.A. of 3.0. All applicants must be U.S. citizens, and minorities, women, handicapped students, and students from schools without undergraduate research opportunities are especially encouraged to apply.
