Black Pride Events in Baltimore, MD

    STAR
TRACK is a HIV/STI program within the Division
of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at the University of Maryland,
Baltimore. We set out to create safe-space events to cater to youth and
young adults between the ages of 12-24. While many institutes of higher
education are familiar with Baltimore Pride
Fest, an annual summer event, few are aware of Black Pride which occurs
in October. We are proud to say that we support and contribute to both
by creating events that focus on young adults. This year we will host
a Karaoke night as well as a self-defense/work-out
session. Knowing students’ ravenous appetites, pizza will be available
at the karaoke event. In addition, both of our events will be held in
downtown venues for transportation accessibility. In addition, on Sept
27th we will be tabling and testing
for HIV/STI on Goucher College’s campus. This event like the others is
open to the community. More information on each event can be found on
    the attached flyers.

For more information, please contact:

Whitney Burton, MPH

Workforce Recruitment Program for Students w/Disabilities

<Tagline>Interview for Summer & Permanent Positions including Interns</Tagline>

Interviews for the program will take place at UMBC (Career Services
Center) on November 5 and November 6, 2012. Deadline to apply is
October 15, 2012. Read details and necessary steps below to participate
     below:

The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities
(WRP) is a recruitment and referral program that connects public and
private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated postsecondary
students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove
their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs.

The WRP provides students with disabilities in all fields of study the
opportunity to market their abilities to a wide variety of potential
employers across the United States, sharpen their interviewing skills
during a required one-on-one meeting with a WRP recruiter, and gain
valuable skills, experience, and contacts on the job.

Applicants for the program must:
- Have a disability AND
- Be a U.S. citizen AND
- Be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education
on a substantially full-time basis (unless the severity of the
disability precludes the student from taking a substantially full-time
load) to seek a degree OR
- Be enrolled in such an institution as a degree-seeking
student taking less than a substantially full-time load in the
enrollment period immediately prior to graduation OR
- have graduated from such an institution within the past year.

The WRP is run on an annual basis and requires student applicants to
have an interview with one of our recruiters during an on-campus
    recruitment visit.

The interviews for summer and permanent positions will take place at UMBC November 5 and November 6, 2012.

Interested and eligible students will need to take the following steps:
1) Upload your resume to your UMBCworks account (login via the Jobs
& Internships Topic in myUMBC). After uploading, students must have
their resume reviewed by a UMBC Career Specialist in the Career
    Services Center in Math/Psychology 212. Walk-in hours are M-F, 2-4pm.

2) Schedule a time with a UMBC Career Specialist to practice interview
techniques and self-advocacy skills. Appointments can be scheduled by
    calling 410.455.2216.

3) Visit https://wrp.gov/registerstudent to:
a) Register and then after your registration is approved (once approved you will receive an email),
b) Fill out your application for the Workforce Recruitment Program
(WRP). You must fill out your application directly into the WRP database
via a student registration portal and complete your entire application
online. We suggest you have someone in the UMBC Career Center carefully
look over your application before you submit it. This will be
competitive and your resume, application, and interview must be top
    notch.

4) Apply in UMBCworks to this position: Workforce Recruitment Program
for College Students with Disabilities – position i.d. number 9253455.

Researcher of the Week: Shannon Zik

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

How did you find your mentor for year research?
I took Organic Chemistry I, taught by Dr. Ptaszek, in the fall of my sophomore year. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and knew I wished to pursue a deeper understanding of the material than my biology major required. I knew that Dr. Ptaszek was involved in research, as his undergraduate assistants would periodically ask questions pertaining to their experiments while I was visiting during office hours. I wanted to be a part of his team, but did not feel qualified until after taking Orgo II. Near the end of my sophomore year and my completion of Chem352, I sent Dr. Ptaszek an email inquiring if he had any availability in his lab. Dr. Ptaszek and I met and discussed the area of research I would be pursuing: chlorin and porphyrin synthesis. That summer, Dr. Ptaszek added me to his team of undergraduate assistants.

Do you get course credit for this work? How much time do you put into it?
Yes, I receive academic credit. During the semester, in addition to my full course load and part time job, I generally dedicate 12-18 hours per week. The amount of time spent per day is depends on the experiment, or which part of the experiment I am executing, i.e., syntheses, purification, or characterization.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?
Dr. Ptaszek informed me of the URA program towards the end of my second semester of working for him. He sent me the information at the end of winter break and I began to work on the proposal at the start of following semester.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?
I had just completed my first semester as a junior pursuing my B.S. in Biological Sciences.

Was the application difficult to do?
While the application was not difficult, it did require a significant amount of time, the reading of numerous research papers, many rough drafts, and considerable effort to maintain the two page constraint. Though ample time was provided to finish the proposal, I continued to make changes until the moment I submitted it.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?
After I wrote the first draft of my proposal, my mentor and I met twice to review and edit it prior to submission.

What has been the hardest part about your research?
Unexpected results! After weeks of synthesizing a compound, sometimes the final step will produce unexpected results such as insolubility, degradation of fluorescent properties, or a mix of products will supersede. Such outcomes provide opportunity to brainstorm about solutions, however it usually requires the synthesis of more starting material which could mean weeks before the proposed solution can be attempted at the final steps and a few more weeks before we find a successful solution.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
DO IT! Research is a fantastic way to develop your knowledge and understanding your field of interest. Additionally, it provides fundamental skills for your classes as well as your future endeavors. Do not be afraid to ask your professors if they have a position open in their lab. Also, do not be worried about knowing everything before you start, most of the techniques will be different than those in your basic lab classes and you will not be expected to know all of them. Ask lots of questions, it’s the only way to learn!

The incredible array of measurement technologies available to the scientific community is changing fundamentally our understanding of physical and biological processes. However, scientific data acquisition marks only the first step. To turn numbers into insight, computer graphics and visualization help us model complex systems, make predictions about their behavior, and finally harness the immense power of the human visual perception system to make insights into complex processes possible. In this talk I will present several novel geometric representations, computational modeling, and visual analysis tools to facilitate the simulation and analysis of such complex scientific phenomena. These representations and tools were developed at the Pitt Interdisciplinary Visualization Research lab I direct, and have applications in domains as diverse as neuroimaging, astronomy, biology, turbulent combustion, or machine translation.

Liz Marai is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh, with joint and adjunct appointments in the Pitt Department of Computational Biology and at the CMU Robotics Institute. She is the Director of the Interdisciplinary Visualization Research lab at Pitt, featuring interdisciplinary research in computational modeling, data visualization, and computer graphics. She is a recipient of an NSF CAREER award, of a recent Best Paper Award at BioVis 2011, and of multiple teaching awards for courses that blend research and teaching.

NEW Internship for those interested in Aging Services

<Tagline>Apply today!</Tagline>

Tender Loving Calls is an innovative, interactive and easy to use subscription telephone messaging service, designed to improve the quality of life for aging seniors and help families take better care of their aging loved ones from a distance.

The associated web site TLC-Connect is to be for the family caregivers and is to be a dual-purpose social learning networking and marketing site. Recent research has shown that family caregivers are very active users of the internet, particularly social networks, both on and offline. They are keen to connect with others to discuss and learn from each others experiences. There are many web sites devoted to providing information on all aspects of aging and caregiving, however very few (if any) encourage communication and collaboration between their visitors. My aim is not just to provide information but to encourage users to share their experiences, using the blogging, forum systems and specialist groups within the TLC site, with the notion that ‘a problem shared is a problem solved’.

We have an interim web site at http://www.tenderlovingcalls.com and are currently building a full scale social learning network to take its place. We are looking for Interns who are interested in working to help develop an active and engaged community of users. In the process they will explore a different application of social networking that goes way beyond the world of Facebook and Twitter. Running a large scale focused social network is very much like being the producer of a live daily TV program. They will work directly with me to learn and master techniques which encourage active and sustained engagement within this community. They will have the opportunity to develop and explore their own ideas pertinent to creating an engaging online environment designed to serve people (especially family caregivers) who are deeply concerned about providing care for our aging community.

If you have any interest you can see some of my past projects at http://www.digitalslate.com.

IF INTERESTED, apply via UMBCworks or send your resume to Christine Routzahn at the Shriver Center (routzahn@umbc.edu)
