The Bernard L. Berkowitz Memorial Fund
Applications are due April 1, 2025
To commemorate the life and work of Bernard (“Bernie”) L. Berkowitz (1927-2023), an endowed annual award program has been established to encourage future generations of public servants who are demonstrating characteristics exhibited by Bernie Berkowitz in his career in Baltimore. The program is administered by the Center for Social Science Scholarship.
Born in 1927 in New York City to immigrant parents from rural Hungary, Bernie grew up in working class neighborhoods in the Bronx. His family’s experience with unemployment in the 1930’s was the basis of a lifelong commitment to social justice and economic development. He attended New York City public schools; graduated cum laude from C.C.N.Y. with a major in economics, and received a Master’s in Urban Planning from Columbia University. He served in the United States Army with occupation forces in Japan and Korea.
In all of his endeavors, Bernie exemplified “no nonsense” intellectual rigor, progressive social thinking, and creative thinking about practical solutions. He aspired to improve the Baltimore community by increasing economic opportunities. He believed in transcending divisions – bringing together people of different social and economic backgrounds. He is fondly remembered for his striving to “do the right thing”, always with a sense of humor and kindness.
Award recipients will be selected annually by UMBC faculty in the Center for Social Science Scholarship based on students’ demonstrated interest in and commitment to planning and economic development of the Baltimore community. Candidates should reflect the interests, values and character of Bernie Berkowitz. Preference will be given to those interested in public service or not-for-profit careers.
Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply by April 1, 2025.

This session will cover those major federal policies, enabling faculty to ensure compliance with new guidance on the use of AI.

Dr. Lusardi is Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Director of the Initiative for Financial Decision-Making, and Professor (by courtesy) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. Lusardi’s remarks take up the question of financial literacy among ordinary people around the world. In the talk, we learn about how much people know about personal finance, who is most vulnerable to economic predations due to their lack of financial literacy, and what we can do about it.

What we can learn about conservation justice from the illegal plant trade?
Global Illegal wildlife trade presents a critical conservation and social development challenge. Inspired by other law-enforcement first responses to vexing conservation problems, many countries, conservation organizations, and conservation advocates continue to seek harsher sentencing laws and punishments for people found guilty of wildlife trafficking or poaching. Drawing on his research from over the past eight years on illegal wildlife trade in ornamental plants in a variety of international contexts, Margulies will argue against this turn towards criminalization for perpetuating forms of conservation violence which ultimately undermines conservation goals.
Instead, drawing from examples of ongoing collaborative research, Margulies will make an argument for socioecological harm reduction in the illegal wildlife trade. Through examples from past research into the global illegal cactus and succulent trade, alongside ongoing research in the illegal trade in endangered succulents in South Africa and the carnivorous Venus flytrap in North Carolina, he will suggest how criminalization in conservation reproduces social harms that may further perpetuate ecological harms. A socioecological harm reduction approach to the illegal wildlife trade draws our attention to the entwined struggles for social and ecological liberation.

The topic of our discussion is the recent Full Circle Climate Communication Workshop, held this January at UMBC.

and co-sponsored by College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Dresher Center for the Humanities; Center for Social Science Scholarship; Department of Biology; Department of Psychology; Human Context of Science and Technology Program.
The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) seeks an Associate Director to work closely with the Director and the Center team to shape and implement CS3 events, programs, and budget. The Associate Director will assist the Director in strategic decision making, shaping CS3 goals, and developing CS3 initiatives. The Associate Director will also be responsible for serving in the Director’s place should the Director be unable to attend various CS3 activities or programs, or at university events or meetings.
The appointment would begin July 1, 2025.
Duties for the Associate Director include:
Work with the Center Director and Coordinator to schedule, coordinate, facilitate, and attend CS3 events, trainings, and workshops, including organizing the biennial Social Science Faculty Publications celebration, the annual Social Science Alumni Panel, and the Social Sciences Forum Distinguished Lecture series.
Review applications for CS3 faculty summer fellowships and small research grants to support Center award decisions.
Review applications and reports of interdisciplinary CS3 faculty working groups and research hubs.
Work with the Center Director, Coordinator, and CS3 Advisory Board to plan, develop, and implement other CS3 programming for students and faculty as needed.
Attend bi-weekly staff meetings and monthly board meetings, participate in strategic planning and budgeting.
Attend monthly CAHSS chairs and directors’ meetings in the Director’s place as needed.
Assist in evaluating CS3 activities and writing the Center’s annual report.
Eligibility: Tenure track faculty with expertise in social science fields (minimum: advanced assistant professor; tenured preferred). Preference will be given to applicants who have been formally involved with CS3, such as service on the CS3 Advisory Board or participation in other Center programs or initiatives.
Compensation for this 3-year appointment includes an annual 2-course reduction and a $5K annual stipend.
